    Amy Wobbema|May 30, 2022

"She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future." - Proverbs 31:25 For the past 11 weeks, 35 girls and their mentors have forged a connection steeped in positive self-esteem, goal setting and kindness. The program is based on research that shows girls struggle with mental health issues at almost double the rate of boys. Further, girls' self-esteem is highest in the...

  • Where the Wild Things Are

    Amy Wobbema|May 30, 2022

Carrington Elementary students showcased some fun year-end exhibits at the school Monday, May 23. The second graders each prepared an animal project, and all were set up in the East Commons for family and friends to explore. They conducted research, put together a display board and either purchased or made a model of their animal. Many used clay to shape their animals....

  • Good things come in good time. . .

    Amy Wobbema|May 23, 2022

It was about this time of year, 22 years ago, when I was on the precipice of my future. There I was, in my second semester of university, and my roommate had an epiphany: we should “go away” for the summer, she surmised. She had a poster in hand from the Ponderosa Ranch, an amusement park on Lake Tahoe, Nevada, that was built to celebrate the legacy of the popular western TV show, “Bonanza.” Now this is where many of you, dear readers, will go down memory lane. How many of you watched “Bonanz...

He is the second CPS administrator to resign this spring, following Superintendent Kris Kuehn's resignation in March. "My resignation will begin at the expiration of my current contract," Bitz said in his letter. His contract ends on June 30. Bitz has served as the high school principal for just one school year. • Make your communication handwritten and heartfelt

    Amy Wobbema|May 9, 2022

One can make the argument that communication may be the single most important aspect of human existence. I couldn’t agree more. As a professional communicator, I strive daily to communicate as effectively as possible. I’ve found there’s no better way to connect with those who aren’t close enough to visit than through handwritten letters. From soldiers and their sweethearts corresponding during wartime, to close friends spread across the country keeping each other up to date on their lives,...

  • Doing auctions differently: Harmon returns to farming roots with Dagger

    Amy Wobbema|May 2, 2022

CHS alum Ian Harmon drew from his agricultural roots when he returned to North Dakota a few years ago. After studying biology and chemistry at UND, he attempted to start a career as a marine biologist in San Diego, Calif. As often happens, Harmon discovered that he had more connections in farming and agriculture than he did in zoos and marine mammals. Now he's the Director of Acquisitions for Dagger Auctions, Inc., an Ada, Minn., based company that specializes in equipment sales. He worked as...

Here are some of the highlights of the annual event, noting those who received special awards while recognizing the efforts of students involved in co-curricular activities that haven't previously been highlighted in this newspaper throughout the school year. • Coach evaluations, activity funding hashed out at special board meeting

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 25, 2022

More than 50 students, parents and staff members gathered in the East Commons at Carrington Public School on Monday evening, just one week after the school board’s regular April meeting. The four-item agenda brought forth discussion about the roles and responsibilities of staff in regards to athletics, as well as a conversation about how to financially support students who qualify for national competitions and conferences in co-curricular activities. “It’s important to meet now, before we send o...

  • Supply chain stresses call for sense of humor

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 25, 2022

“Due to supply chain issues, your February order of snow has now been delivered. We apologize for any inconvenience.” When I saw that meme on Facebook last week, I had to share. It perfectly captured the current situation we’re in. Too little, too late. Too much, too soon. Supply chain issues have affected everything from pre-punched paper for calendars to crystal tie-dye hoodies for the NR-S senior class. We had a restaurant owner tell us she has a hard time ordering food. She doesn’t want to a...

  • Improving access to archives

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 18, 2022

Looking for your great- grandfather's obituary, or an article about your family's business or farm in Foster County in the early 1900s? There's a new way to read local newspapers from the past as close as your computer screen. Michele Seil, director of the Carrington City Library, presented its new digital archive of area newspapers in front of the Carrington Kiwanis Club on April 6. The archive is available online at https://carringtonlibrary.advantage-preservation.com/ The Foster County site...

  • Word games are my daily therapy

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 11, 2022

I’m a word nerd. Words are fun and games to me, a lifelong writer. I enjoy searching for the right synonym or phrase to spice up an otherwise ordinary article. At the newspaper office, crafting headlines is another form of “word game” to us. From puns and alliteration to acronyms and homophones, we try them all to get readers’ attention. I will say, headlines still aren’t my strong suit, even after seven years in the newspaper business. In the annual North Dakota newspaper contest, we usually g...

The agency's principal supply works include the New Rockford Canal, McClusky Canal and Snake Creek Pumping Plant (SCPP). Garrison Diversion does not own the facilities. • CPS commits to full-day Pre-K program

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 28, 2022

Cost won’t be one of the factors that help differentiate which local pre-K program families should choose. The Carrington School Board voted Tuesday to charge $150 per month tuition for all students, regardless of financial situation. Earlier this month, the Independent reported that Caring-Ton Preschool, the private nonprofit preschool program in the city, decided to offer a morning class next school year. They reported that their rate would increase to $150 per month, from $125 this year, a...

  • Opinion: Ready to say goodbye to the time changes

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 28, 2022

If I could, I think I'd wake up with the sun. There's nothing better than rising with the sun as it streams through the west window of my bedroom. This time of year, I'm usually still in a stupor from the time change, as the first weeks of Daylight Saving Time have me waking up and preparing myself for the day in darkness. After a long winter like we've had this year, those early mornings of pitch blackness zap the energy right out of me. That's why I'm watching the bill before Congress to elimi...

  • Two nights on the town to support local

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 14, 2022

Next week I get the benefit of two nights out in a row. Both the New Rockford and Carrington chambers of commerce and economic development organizations will be hosting their annual banquet/meetings. Carrington’s joint annual meeting is first on the calendar, with the social, dinner and presentations scheduled for Thursday, March 24 at the Chieftain. New Rockford gets its night to shine on Friday, March 25. After three years straight of not hosting one in New Rockford, this year the New Rockford...

  • Caring-Ton Preschool makes plans for 2022-23

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 7, 2022

Area families will have choices when it comes to preschool next year. A few months ago, the Carrington School Board agreed to develop a preschool program at the elementary school beginning with the 2022-23 school year. Now, Caring-Ton Preschool, the city's private, nonprofit run program, has announced its plans for the coming year. Treasurer Nicole Harildstad and teacher Amy Seaburg told the Independent Monday that there will be one morning session offered at Caring-Ton Preschool for the...

  • 'I'm Just Wild About Harry' at DPRCA

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 7, 2022

It's time to go way back to the turn of the century, the 20th century that is. Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts (DPRCA) presents "I'm Just Wild About Harry," opening Friday, March 18 at the Old Church Theatre in New Rockford. This exciting musical romp based on a late-1800s play features nostalgic favorites such as "Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built for Two)," "Aba Daba Honeymoon," "You Made Me Love You," and, of course, the title tune, "I'm Just Wild About Harry," written in 1921 and...

  • Spring Dance Show held

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 7, 2022

Forever Dance in Carrington hosted its annual Spring Show Sunday, February 27, at the East Gym at Carrington Public School. The "Tinies" (two-to-three year olds), and Levels 1, 2 and 3 performed various routines for the assembled crowd, and the Carrington Cardinaires high school dance team performed their jazz routine, "Elastic Heart." All music for the program shared the common theme, "Dreams, Sunshine, and Rainbows." Routines performed included, but were not limited to, "Walkin' On Sunshine"...

  • Winter is planning season

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 28, 2022

Amid all this wonderful wintery weather we’ve been experiencing, it may appear that no work is getting done. To the contrary, winter is what I refer to as “planning season.” Whether we gaze out the window from our warm offices or hunker down by the fireplace in our homes, our wheels are turning thinking about the months ahead. What kind of a year will we have? When and where will we travel? How many weddings and graduations are on the calendar? Do we have proper attire for them all? Here at the...

  • City sales tax revenue reaches record high

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 14, 2022

All those pennies sure add up. The City of Carrington collected more than $900,000 in revenue last year from its 2 percent city sales tax. The $935,833.04 total is a record high for the Central City, eclipsing last year's collections by about $29,000. The dollars are split among three funds: the city's general, infrastructure and economic development funds. Part of the growth in collections over the past few years is a result of the landmark South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court case. The high...

  • Archery: Where everybody gets the same shot

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 14, 2022

Both Carrington and New Rockford hosted their annual archery tournaments over the past two weeks. As a parent of three teenagers, who all compete in archery and several other activities, I must say archery is among my favorites. Why? Well, as Jamie Risovi, retired head coach and founder of the Rocket Archery program at New Rockford-Sheyenne School once told me, "Everyone gets the same shot." It's absolutely true. Archery is a sport for the tall and the small. Each person is responsible for his o...

  • The Force is with her

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 7, 2022

The East Gym at Carrington Public School was abuzz with excitement on Monday, Jan. 31. There, elementary students and staff gathered to commemorate the 100th day of school. Although the celebration was actually held a day early due to a storm day in January, the show needed to go on for a particular reason. Carrington sixth grader McKenzie Jost had just finished a whirlwind year as the North Dakota Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion, and some of her "Fargo friends" had a special...

  • Opportunities await in central North Dakota

    Amy Wobbema|Jan 31, 2022

Twila Klein told us last fall that the Hi-Way Drive In wouldn't be opening this spring unless she could find more help. Other businesses have reduced hours or services due to a shortage of workers. For years we have needed youth to come back or new people to come to fill our staffing needs, and the pandemic hasn't helped our situation. The Help Wanted ad for the Hi-Way Drive In is on page 2 of the PLUS, right next to several others with a variety of openings. Carrington Chamber Director Laurie...
