    Erik Gjovik|Aug 12, 2024

John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 of Carrington was back in familiar territory, the State American Legion Class 'B' Baseball Tournament, for the 10th time in 11 summers. The new-look Townsend Field in LaMoure, with an expanded, more accessible and safe bleacher section, turf inserts on the mound and home plate area, and a fresh coat of paint, welcomed visitors to southeast North Dakota for the 2024 tournament. In what was generally regarded as a wide-open tourney with no clear favorite, Post 25 won...

  • From cattle to the clinic

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2024

Having grown up helping out on her parents' beef cattle operation just outside of Grace City, Lauren Staton is no stranger to detail to make sure everything is in working order. Now, she will put those talents to work with people's health and well-being, as she is CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Clinic and Urgent Care's newest Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Staton started seeing patients officially on August 1, but she has already built a degree of familiarity with her local...

  • What's in a name?

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2024

Imagine, if you can, coming to the realization that something you held to be true for four years is, in fact, wrong. And no, this is not about my personal politics. Slow your roll there, smart alecks. It all started with a seemingly innocuous Facebook post Wednesday night, July 24, congratulating our baseball boys from Carrington Post 25 on capturing another District 4 championship and advancing to the State ‘B’ American Legion Tournament in LaMoure. At the bottom of the post, I made an “at...

  • Back for 'Moure!

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2024

Even with the change in team leadership going into this season, all the pieces were there for first-year Post 25 Coach Jayden Shipman to make a splash of his own. The difficulty of following the standard that former Coach Tim Ranum set for the Carrington American Legion baseball program is a hard fact to discount. But Shipman's club, behind its three 19-year-olds, reached deep down for something extra and completed another successful return to the Class B Tournament with a 4-3 win over the...

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2024

If not for two disastrous innings, the Carrington Redbirds put a scare into a pair of quality teams at the State Class 'B' Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament for the 13-to-15 year old division Friday and Saturday, July 26-27. At points in their tourney journey, the 'Birds trailed defending state champion Park River by just 6-4, and were in the conversation for an upset against the Burlington Bulldogs in loser-out play, staring at a 3-2 late game deficit. But that's where things went south fast for...

  • Wieland new at Garr Dental Center

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 29, 2024

Occasionally, familiarity with the area is the biggest factor in a first job search. Samantha Wieland played her fair share of games in Carrington as a high school athlete for Barnes County North, and she comes to the Central City and Garr Dental Center. Wieland will work alongside Dr. Ben Garr at GDC, filling the second dental practitioner role which was vacant for an extended period after Dr. Kali Anderson moved to Jamestown. "I'm excited to work with the young, the old, and everyone in...

The Redbirds from John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 earned tight 3-2 and 5-3 wins over New Rockford Post 30 and the Linton/Ashley/Wishek Rattlers to make their way to the championship game played last Wednesday night at Jim Johnson Park in New Rockford. Post 25 would need just one victory out of two games over the...

  • Redbirds take two defeats at RRV Babe Ruth tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 29, 2024

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 22, 2024

The John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds of Carrington got through their regular season schedule save for one game, and they appear for all intents and purposes to be the team to beat in the District 4 Tournament. • Top of the podium

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 8, 2024

From his younger days growing up on a farm 14 miles northwest of Pingree in the shadow of the Hawksnest foothills, Greg Hoeckle was always driven to succeed. When he first arrived in the Carrington school district as the new elementary physical education teacher in August 1990, Hoeckle's after-school gig in the spring season, track and field, became his passion. And his teams' staggering accomplishments since then have led the soft-spoken (but forceful when it has to be) coach with the ready...
