  • Answering the call

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

During this National EMS Week, celebrated on May 19-25, 2024, one of the major focal points in the emergency medical services (EMS) profession, at least in North Dakota, is the shortage of volunteers for first response. Often times, those few minutes that it takes for a 911 call to go through radio dispatch, paging the appropriate service, and hoping that they are fully staffed to arrive on scene are becoming more and more crucial. Jerome Short has seen it all in his 43 years on McHenry...

Muralist Linda Roesch applies a dash of spray paint to a mural adorning a shipping container in the back alley behind Lioness at 912 Main St. in Carrington. Roesch, originally from Onaka, S.D., took her time to put her creative talents to use last week using donated spray cans for the art project. A time lapse video showing the mural's progress from start to completion can be seen on Lioness's Facebook page....

  • Going the distance

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

In this, her final season on the track as a Cardinal, Madison Johnson has come into her own and established herself as one of the program's legends. Now, it just remains to be seen if those blistering numbers on the stopwatch translate to individual or team glory at the state meet this upcoming Thursday-Saturday in Bismarck. Johnson broke the CHS 800-meter record with a 2:19.34 time at the HWC Invitational in Fessenden Saturday, May 11, the fourth time this spring that she has achieved the top...

  • Bickett qualifies in 400; Weninger returns at Rotary

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

Returning Class B 400-meter state champion, Logan Weninger, has watched much of the spring track season from the shelf. Nursing a nagging hamstring injury, the senior returned to the track for one final regular season meet when he and his Carrington teammates competed at the Devils Lake Rotary meet last Monday, May 13. Weninger ran just one race, the 300-meter hurdles, and ran a state qualifying time of 41.59 to take first in the event. Junior Ryder Bickett added a second individual event to...

  • Boote qualifies for CNFR

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

Dickinson State University senior Jory Boote proved himself good enough with a lasso to punch his ticket to the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR). Jory, the son of Alan and Nikki Boote of Binford, will be making the trip to Casper, Wyo., June 7-15, thanks to placing second in Tie-Down Roping in the Great Plains Region standings for the season. Boote's score of 515 points puts him just behind event leader Luke Mavity (572) of Black Hills State University (Spearfish, S.D.). He is currently in...

  • Cards swept in Park River, rout Panthers at home

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

Two tough opponents dealt the Carrington Cardinals losses at the so-called "Baseball Day" in Park River on Friday, May 10. The Cards fell by a 9-4 count to the host Park River/Fordville-Lankin Aggies, and two-time Class B defending title winners Thompson dispatched CHS, 9-2, in action from northeast North Dakota. Five-run innings proved to be the fatal blows for Carrington in each instance, as they were victimized in the fifth by the Tommies and the sixth by the Aggies. Carrington would return t...

  • Softball wins vs. Larimore, HWC

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2024

Strong efforts in the final regular season games for the Carrington Cardinals put them in position for a few program firsts. On Thursday, May 9, the Cards trounced south sub-Region 2 opponent Larimore, 25-4, to earn a home postseason tournament matchup with those same Polar Bears this past Thursday. In the first inning, 14 CHS batters came across to score, with 20 coming to the plate against the beleaguered Polar Bear pitchers. Katie Allmaras went 3-for-4 in the win, scoring four runs along with...

  • Passing into history

    Erik Gjovik|May 13, 2024

The Cathay School now only exists as a fond memory to all those who have walked its halls, as demolition of the 104-year-old structure went into full swing early last week. In the above photo taken last Wednesday several days after crews from Ralph Volson Enterprises of Balfour took down the shell of the school, portions of the eastern exterior wall of the gym remain for final cleanup and disposal. The school was built in 1920 after the previous building burned down two years earlier, and...

  • Another week, another record

    Erik Gjovik|May 13, 2024

Madison Johnson's pursuit of the Carrington girls' track record books bore dividends for the third time this season. Johnson set a new mark in the 3,200-meter run at the Cards' home Kiwanis/Lions Track meet on Saturday, May 4, running an 11:30.05 time to surpass Ashley Neumiller's 2014 standard of 11:39.64. She, along with Kenadie Pazdernik, took a ride outside of their comfort zones to the short sprints, and qualified as possible alternates for the 4x200-meter relay in 1:50.88. Harper Kollman...

  • Cards fall to L-L-M

    Erik Gjovik|May 13, 2024

The highs and lows of the spring baseball slate continue for the Carrington Cardinals. Carrington built up some momentum with a non-region doubleheader sweep in Tolna over the Nelson County/Midkota Chargers (4-0) and Hatton-Northwood (9-6) in Saturday, May 4 weekend action, but all the good diamond vibes came to a halt with a pair of sizable late-inning swoons in a 10-3 Region 3 loss to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion at Townsend Field in LaMoure last Monday, May 6. The Cards fell behind to the...

As a licensed funeral director, Sabinash saw that up close in dealing with bereaved families on a daily basis in her time with Evans Funeral Home in Carrington and New Rockford. Now, she will bring her talents to CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center as the hospital's new Foundation Director. Sabinash fills a...

  • Maximizing miscues

    Erik Gjovik|May 6, 2024

Carrington may not win all the games they play this spring, but they seem to have a flair for the games that count. The Cardinals improved their Region 3 record to 4-1 with a 7-3 win over their rivals up the highway, the SNR Black Sox, on Tuesday, April 30. With the threat of precipitation looming, the game was moved up from its 3 p.m. starting time to 1:00, and starters Josh Bickett of the Cards and Keaton Cudworth of the Sox went to work early with two scoreless innings each. SNR got the...

  • Cards get key region win over South Border

    Erik Gjovik|May 6, 2024

Quietly, the South Border Mustangs have inserted themselves into the conversation in the short list of Region 3 contenders one month into the high school baseball season. Wins over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion (11-8) on April 11 and Carrington (4-0) in the second part of the Cards' doubleheader with Langdon/Edmore/Munich on Thursday, April 25, means that the regional picture has become ever more muddied. But with a strong pitching performance by Grady Shipman in Wishek, CHS showed they can still...

Griggs/Midkota took to the track for a pair of invitational meets on April 20 and 26, as they participated in the Don Kerlin Memorial Invitational at May-Port-CG High School and the VCSU High School Open six days later. The Titans had one participant improve on his state meet seeding, as shot putter Levi Kautzman hit a big attempt of 48 feet, nine inches in Valley City. Results from the two meets are as follows: Don Kerlin Memorial Invitational Track Meet, Mayville Saturday, April 20 Boys' Team...

Carrington made a rare trip just north to New Rockford Golf Club on Wednesday, April 24, for a triangular meet featuring the Cards, the host NR-S Rockets and Griggs/Midkota Titans as featured participants. It was the first tournament hosted at the nine-hole course in quite some time, and the conditions made for some favorable scores. Grady Shipman played in his first action of the year, and took fourth with a card of 41. He was followed down the leaderboard by Hunter Bachmeier (44), Max Whitman...

  • Big inning issues doom CHS

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 29, 2024

In almost the blink of an eye, it all went to a bad place for the Carrington baseball team. Four innings had elapsed between the Cards and the visiting May-Port-CG Patriots, with both teams getting two-run frames to settle into a 2-2 deadlock. But a few hit batters, hits and errors later, things got out of reach, and the Pats scored nine times in the next two innings to shellshock the host team, 11-2, in the "official" home opener at City Park Monday night, April 22. Ethan Roller got the start...

  • Passing the bottle

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 22, 2024

As the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end." But that doesn't mean that the fine fruit wines from Dakota Sun Winery are gone for good. Business-owners Bruce and Merleen Gussiaas sold the winery to Devin Quick of Williston in February, meaning the production of the award-winning wines will no longer be done from the family's rural Carrington farm in Nordmore Township. From their entry into the wine-making business back in 2010, the Gussiaases have built the winery, and associated...
