CHS had a golden opportunity for their first win of the season go by the wayside in the opener of the Carrington Shootout, as they dropped a 66-63 overtime heartbreaker to the Nedrose Cardinals. The next day, Stanley took control from the outset and sent the hometown Cards to their sixth straight defeat to begin the season, 62-28. Junior guard Josh Bickett gave Carrington a chance with 27 points, including six in the extra session. Ten points each were scored by Ryder Bickett and Grady Shipman,...
Carrington had one of their most impressive three-game stretches shooting from the perimeter in a sweep over Hazen (71-38) and Stanley (64-28) at their home Shootout, and taking a 72-60 win over Valley City last Tuesday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center. In both of their Shootout wins, the Cards dialed long distance for eight threes, but that was small potatoes compared to what was in store for the Hi-Liners. Coach Andy Braaten's squad finished with 12 trifectas as they took down a...
It wasn't pretty or efficient at times, but the Griggs/Midkota Titans found their stride in the second half to take a 57-50 win over the Nelson County Chargers Tuesday night, January 2, in Glenfield. The game was the first District 4 contest for both the 5-4 Titans and 2-8 Chargers, and G-M had issues shooting and defending in the first half as they trailed at the break, 27-23. It took a big fourth quarter for G-M, keyed by nine free throws in crunch time and six field goals, to overtake a...
The Carrington girls wrestling team turned some heads at the Rumble on the Red December 28-29, taking home sixth place among a herd of large school North Dakota and several Minnesota programs. CHS scored 86 points on the strength of three individual placers, and finished behind tourney winners Bismarck, Minot, Bismarck Legacy, Bemidji, Minn., and Mandan. Fourth-place finisher Madalina Ciubotareanu, a freshman at 136 pounds, won her first three matches by pin, and ended with four wins in six...
With steady growth in the first four years of its existence and the need for more space to serve the talents of area tumblers, the Carrington Gymnastics Club (CGC) is on the move once again. The club will now occupy its third different location, as founder/owner Tammy Sorensen has purchased the former parts building of the High Plains Equipment dealership at 6719 Highway 200 for the organization’s new home. Sorensen said her team has been in action at local meets since beginning practice session...
Gabe Inglish and Ridge Kramlich brought home state hardware for the Carrington middle school wrestling program at that level's tournament in Minot Saturday, December 16. Inglish had four wins in the 7th-8th grade 80-pound weight class and Kramlich three in the 6th grade 90-pound class at the event, which was won by Wachter Middle School from Bismarck with 179.5 team points. Carrington finished 19th with 55 points, and their team score included third place showings by Mason Cook (6th 95) and...
Out in Rugby, the Carrington Cardinal girls basketball team brought out their hard hats and lunch pails, and did some work on defense. The Cards held the Panthers to a paltry 20 points in a 30-point victory in Division A basketball, 50-20, in the final game before the Christmas break Thursday night, December 21. Junior Edyn Hoornaert carried the offensive load all night long for CHS (4-3), scoring 10 first half points and 11 more in the second to finish with 21. Kenadie Pazdernik had six points...
A team with a lot of length, shooting ability and postseason success from their legendary tenure in Class B came to the East Gym in search of a win in the tough Region 2 gauntlet. And, at the end of the night, the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros came away with their first Division A win in three tries, doubling up the Carrington Cardinals by a final count of 64-32 Thursday night, December 21. The Burros (1-2, 1-0 region) and two time state championship-winning coach Elliot Rotvold brought their...
Steer wrestler Bridger Anderson of Carrington always dreamed of bringing home a big shiny check from the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. And, for 10 days worth of rounds, Anderson cashed in for a big payday of $120,939 at this year's NFR, held at the Thomas & Mack Center December 7-16. In the year-end standings, the 25-year-old local bulldogger and son of Glenn and Robin Anderson finished seventh worldwide, with season earnings of $206,540. That's seven spots up from where he was si...
The East Gym was the site for a double triangular dual, featuring both the Carrington boys and girls wrestling teams. The Lisbon Broncos took on both squads, with the Cardinal boys falling in a 54-21 decision and the girls coming out on top, 48-30. Velva took on the CHS boys in the nightcap and sent the Cards to defeat, 49-12. With an upset win over Lisbon in the previous round, the Aggies put themselves on the short list for state championship contenders in the dual tournament in February. In t...
Carrington’s wrestlers made a run for the southerly portion of the state for two separate tournaments the weekend of December 15-16. The Cardinal boys made their traditional stop at the Linton Holiday Tournament for a two-day event, while the girls attended what could be a budding tradition itself, at the second annual Border Brawl in Ashley on Saturday. CHS’ girls were the top-scoring Class B school at the Brawl, finishing fifth with 70.5 points. The shorthanded boys came in 13th at Linton wit...
Like store sales, 2-for-1 deals are always popular before the holidays. But the results for the Carrington basketball teams in a scheduled twinbill with the Thompson Tommies put the Cardinals in a mood for gift returns. The Division A top-ranked Tommie girls shot lights out in the first quarter with 26 points and rode that wave to a 70-53 win over CHS, and Thompson's boys kept their counterparts from getting an offensive flow going in a 64-35 defeat in the East Gym Thursday night, December 14....
The sign of maturity for an improving team is the ability to make the plays when the opponent, crowd and enormity of the plays down the stretch all conspire to make for a hard time. Griggs/Midkota made the plays to be made in coming back from a 33-28 deficit headed into the fourth quarter, and quieted the Napoleon faithful with a 51-49 win over the N-G-S Imperials Thursday night, December 14. In that period, the play of Kelsey Johnson and several others made all the difference. Johnson had 20...
Medina/Pingree-Buchanan avenged a loss on the girls' side to Griggs/Midkota three days before by taking their first win of the year in Pingree, 48-42, over the Titans Friday night, December 15. The Thunder hit a trio of trifectas in the first quarter to build some distance between themselves and G-M, going up by a six-point margin at 17-11. For the game, the Thunder connected on six long range shots. M-P-B would slowly solidify that lead, growing the advantage to eight at the half and later 11...
With a strong effort on both sides of the basketball, Carrington made their way back into the top half of the Region 2 girls' basketball table Tuesday night, December 19, in Buxton. The Cards took a 68-31 victory against the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros at Central Valley School, which featured an 18-3 run for the visitors to begin the proceedings. Kennedy Olsen's three-point play represented the entirety of the HCV offense in the first eight minutes of play, while Carrington got to the line f...

The University of Jamestown Shootout at Harold Newman Arena didn't come up roses for either of the M-P-B Thunder basketball teams Saturday afternoon, December 16. Girls' action saw the Thunder fall shot to the Larimore Polar Bears, 45-38, while the Hankinson Pirates cruised in a 54-32 triumph over the M-P-B boys. The Thunder led by one after the first quarter, 15-14, and the Polar Bears flipped that result to 23-21 at the halftime horn. In the decisive third quarter, Larimore held M-P-B to just...
In their second attempt to pass a bond referendum to approve funding for an addition and renovation to their elementary school facility in Buchanan, voters in the Pingree-Buchanan school district rejected the $5.1 million proposal at the ballot box. Unofficial results from the Wednesday, December 6, election showed that 133 voters were in favor of the referendum, or 56%, to 104 opposed, or 44%. A 60% supermajority was needed for the project to pass. Turnout for the latest election was higher...
Both Carrington wrestling teams were front and center at their annual home tournament Saturday morning and afternoon, December 9. The annual Al Larson Memorial Wrestling Tournament was held in both the West and East Gyms, with separate boys' and girls' tournaments. In the girls team standings, the Cards finished only 18 points behind winner Central Cass with 151 total points, while the boys were third, scoring 158 to finish behind tourney champion Lisbon's 212.5 and Class A Minot's 204. Dru Carr...
Before the start of the Al Larson Tournament, the Carrington boys and girls faced off with their team opponents in a total of six dual matches. Four of those were on the boys’ side, and the Cardinals won three of the four matchups with New Salem-Almont, Central Cass and Napoleon, while dropping their match to the Minot Magicians. The girls team took on Pembina County North and South Border, getting victories in both matches. Results from the Carrington Duals for both the CHS boys and girls a...
Towards the end of last season on the wrestling mat, things were starting to come together for then-CHS sophomore Dru Carr. After several seasons taking his licks as a lightweight grappler for the Cards and learning how to turn losses into wins, Carr had his breakout season in 2022-23 with a sixth-place finish in the old 113-pound weight class at the State B Tournament. He took that confidence into this year's Al Larson Memorial Wrestling Tournament, and won his first-ever weekend event with...
One has to go all the way back to 1981 for the last time Carrington and Devils Lake met on the basketball floor as conference mates. That was the final year of the Northstar Conference, an “island of misfit toys” in the Class A division mostly consisting of lower-enrollment schools too big for the then-larger Class B membership that at one time boasted 32 districts. The Cardinals and Firebirds, previously known as the Satans 42 years ago, resumed pleasantries as Division A members Tuesday nig...
In the switch from two to three divisions in basketball, one subsection of schools was particularly affected, those being the private schools. The long-time Region 5 powers in both boys and girls basketball, Shiloh Christian of northeast Bismarck, were one of those teams placed into the new Division A. And, if the final score of their girls game with Carrington was any indicator, the new intra-divisional rivalries should be tense battles indeed. The Skyhawks clawed back from trailing by seven po...
The Carrington boys had their chances, but were unable to withstand a fourth-quarter surge by the Griggs/Midkota Titans in Glenfield and fell in a 51-41 decision Monday night, December 11. The Cards trailed by merely a 30-28 score into the final eight minutes of play, but G-M wore a path to the foul line and cashed in on their opportunities to secure the win. Much of that was due to the clutch foul shooting from Will Spickler, who hit seven of his eight attempts in the fourth and added a...
The Griggs/Midkota Titans' loss to the Oakes Tornadoes in Cooperstown contained easily-fixable mistakes that could serve the team well if they learn from them. One bad quarter was all it took for the Titans to get behind the eight ball for good in a 43-26 loss on December 7, as a two-point showing for the second quarter allowed the visitors to build a six-point cushion up to 16 at the half. Jessa Spickler had the one field goal in that period, and the Titans had only two free throw attempts...
