Those darned fourth downs. A case could have been made that if they had made three more key stops during their otherwise very-successful campaign in 2023, the Carrington Cardinals may have been sitting with nine wins in 10 games instead of six. But armchair speculation is ultimately just that, and Carrington played the cards they were dealt in hosting their first home playoff game since 2018 when the 6-2 Oakes Tornadoes invaded Cardinal Stadium. The Tornadoes proved their mettle, tested by...
A pair of volleyball programs hoping to gain positive momentum into the start of their district tournaments met in Carrington's East Gym Monday night, October 23. Medina/Pingree-Buchanan, already locked in as the top seed in District 6, met the fourth-seeded Cardinals from District 5 in what has annually become an underrated rivalry of two teams with high yearly expectations. This time around, it was CHS, behind a stout effort on the blocking game and their scrappy earn-your-points back row,...
Ten years (plus two days) to the day since it last happened, the Carrington cross country team has an East Region champion runner. Junior Kenadie Pazdernik crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 55.5 seconds to capture victory in the girls' race at the penultimate postseason meet in Cooperstown Saturday morning, October 21. Her win was the first for a CHS runner at regionals since Ashley Neumiller won the race as a freshman in 2013. As a team, CHS finished in sixth place for the girls'...
A few points here and there separated the Griggs/Midkota Titans from what would have been their signature victory of the season on the volleyball court. In New Rockford Monday night, October 23, the Titans shocked defending Region 4 champion NR-S in the second and third sets, taking 25-23 wins in both following a 25-16 opening set loss, before the Rockets got their bearings and took the final two sets, 25-19 and 15-12, to escape with a win in the regular season finale for G-M. Kelsey Johnson...
In a brief meeting short on action items held Tuesday, October 17, the Carrington Public School District Board of Education approved a co-op agreement for girls’ softball with New Rockford-Sheyenne. The move comes after their counterparts on the NR-S school board gave the go-ahead for the co-op on their end on October 9, and allows CPS to formalize the agreement and submit paperwork to the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) for this spring. At the meeting, it was stated t...
Family, friends and other volunteers gathered with their combines, hoppers, and grain trucks to assist with the harvest of the late Larry Polries's fields Tuesday morning and afternoon, October 17, located south of Sykeston adjacent to Wells County Road 69. Polries lost his life in a tragic plane crash while spraying fields north of Carrington several weeks ago. A grand total of 20 combines and 25 trucks worked to ensure that the harvest was complete, and the festivities also included a flyover...
Over the eight previous weeks of football, the Carrington Cardinals played their way near the top of an otherwise parity-filled Region 2, and gave themselves one shot to capture a regular-season crown. However, the longtime regional power, Langdon/Edmore/Munich, proved themselves to be on a whole other level Thursday night, October 12. L/E/M ran roughshod over the regional field all season to conclude their regular campaign at 9-0 with a 50-8 drubbing over the Cards at Cardinal Stadium. "Just a...
Into their final game of the Nine-Man Region 1 season, the Hankinson Pirates were looking good for the region's last playoff spot, at least on paper. The Pirates, along with Maple River, were each in need of a win and hopeful for the other's defeat to grab the number four seed. All Hankinson needed to do was get past the 1-6 Griggs/Midkota Titans, while Maple River had the misfortune of drawing top-ranked Sargent County in the luck of the scheduling. But that's why they play the game. Hankinson...
Carrington got a bit of their mojo back after a five-set loss to Oakes on October 10, and took out their frustrations on a trio of opponents in matches covering October 12-17. The Cards took a 3-0 win over Kidder County in the first match of that three-game swing, by final scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16 on Thursday. Last Monday, they dispatched Griggs/Midkota, 25-13, 25-10 and 25-13, and did the same to Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter on Senior Night, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-11. With the victories,...
Just call it another night in the always-tough Region 3 volleyball wars. M-P-B added another win to their total with a four-set triumph (24-26, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21) over the Oakes Tornadoes, 3-1, last Tuesday evening in Oakes. Maddie Gefroh headed a three-way assault on the Tornado defense with 21 total kills, and 17 apiece came off the hands of Allison Thomas and Brynn Sorenson. Four different Thunder players had at least 20 digs in the win, led by 38 from Sorenson, along with Alaina Bosche (35...
The 2023 cross country season is hitting the home stretch, and Carrington, Griggs/Midkota and M-P-B were all on hand at the Cooperstown Bible Camp's sprawling campus Thursday, October 12, for the final regular season meet. Runners will now prepare for the postseason, as the East Region Meet was held last Saturday at Cooperstown Golf Club. The culmination of the season, the State Class B Cross Country Meet, will be held Friday, October 27, at Parkhurst Recreation Area north of Jamestown. Top 20-l...

Sophomore Kelsey Johnson hit 10 kills for the Titans in defeat, and Vanessa Vollmer's 14 digs also led the team. Additionally notching double digits in the dig statistic were Ryan Johnson (12) and Kennedy Reidman (10). Emma McCullough made 25 assists for G-M, and also was the top server with two aces. Coupled with their...

The concert was the first at the director's baton for Annette Hovey at the Carrington school district. At top left, the high school choir performs, while musicians from the junior high and high school bands also showed their talents....
It's a chore that's been done thousands of times, and no one would think twice of danger. But in one traumatic moment on July 26, 2023, Merle Radke's quality of life changed for the worse. While repairing a lawnmower, the engine suddenly ignited in flames, burning Radke severely with burns on his face, chest, arms and hands. His son, Marc, explained what happened that day. "We were working on it, putting gas down the carburetor, and it backfired," he said. "It just happened so fast, next thing y...
Explosive plays, which have been in mighty short supply for the Griggs/Midkota Titans this season, came in abundance Friday night, October 6, in Cooperstown. And each and every one of those scores helped the Titans record their first win of the season, 52-32, over the Enderlin Eagles in 9-man Region 1 action. "It was nice to see our offense get the ball moving," said Titan Head Coach Ryan Dockter. "Our defense played tough, putting up two scores themselves, and it was nice to have three seniors...
Style points don't count for much in the grand scheme of things, but the Carrington Cardinals might have been a little too close for comfort in relation to winless Park River Area to Coach Kyle Smith's liking. Considering the prize at stake, being ahead by a 14-8 score early in the fourth quarter could have been a recipe for an upset for the hometown Aggies. However, the Cards got an insurance touchdown late, and opted not to go for points in the final seconds deep in Aggie territory to secure...
All four Independent-area volleyball teams, plus New Rockford-Sheyenne just to the north, slipped on the knee pads, spandex and long sleeves for a full day's worth of tense net drama at the annual Carrington Varsity Volleyball Tournament Saturday, October 7. When the last point was signaled from the official's platform, it was the NR-S Rockets reigning supreme as tournament champions with a perfect 6-0 record covering pool and bracket play. Sporting a new rotation, the Rockets did not drop a...
Medina/Pingree-Buchanan got their stride kicking in full gear on opposite ends of the Carrington tournament, taking a sweep against BCN in Leal (25-11, 25-6 and 25-12) on Thursday, October 5, and concluding a perfect District 6 league record of 5-0 with another three-set victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-13) over Strasburg/Zeeland last Tuesday. The Thunder bolstered their season record to 22-7 with the wins, and finish up the regular season with road games against Oakes Tuesday night. In the S-Z match,...
Griggs/Midkota took a three-set loss at the hands of the Park River/Fordville-Lankin Aggies in Park River, by scores of 17-25, 18-25 and 22-25 in nonregion volleyball played Thursday, October 5, in Park River. Kelsey Johnson, a sophomore, hit double figures with 10 kills for the Titans, and also led the team with two aces while collecting 19 digs. Senior middle hitter Kadance Klubben had six kills. From the setter spot, Emma McCullough had 25 assists, and libero Ryan Johnson kept back row action...
The Carrington Cardinals donned their special pink jerseys Tuesday night, October 10, when they played the Oakes Tornadoes in District 5 play. The color pink is the official color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is held annually in October. Members of the volleyball program collected donations from spectators throughout the match, with all proceeds going to area women fighting their battles individually. As far as action on the court went, the Cards and Tornadoes went to five sets, as...
But for a momentary slipup in set three of their District 5 game last week, the Carrington volleyball team would have had a perfect set record in regulation matches played during the period of September 28 to October 3. The Cards took a three-set win over nonregion opponent Benson County in the East Gym in the first match (25-16, 25-10, 25-8), and were cruising along in their conference match with Barnes County North in Leal after dual 25-12 wins in the first two games. But the Bison played...
The M-P-B Thunder solidified their hold on the top of the District 6 standings with two wins over league opponents Thursday and Monday, September 28 and October 2. In Steele, the Thunder cruised to a 25-14, 25-11 and 25-14 victory at the expense of Kidder County, and four nights later, followed suit with a 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17 home triumph against Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter in Medina. Junior Maddie Gefroh was the top hitter and net defender in both matches, as the tall left-hander put up stat...
The traditional midseason barometer for Class B volleyball teams with designs on something greater, the Des Lacs-Burlington Laker Invitational, came and went Friday-Saturday, September 29-30. And for the first time in Coach Megan Trautman's tenure, the Carrington Cardinals did well enough in pool play to advance to the top bracket in Saturday's tournament. Competing in Pool A, the Cards took two-set sweeps against Glen Ullin/Hebron (25-10, 25-17) and the host Lakers (25-21, 25-20), but showed...
The Griggs/Midkota Titan volleyball team was defeated in two three-set losses against the South Border Mustangs in intra-Region 3 play, and with one of their District 5 foes, the Oakes Tornadoes. G-M, now 4-8 and 1-2 in district outings, suffered a 15-25, 21-25 and 13-25 setback to the Mustangs on Thursday, September 28, and lost to the Tornadoes by 10-25, 12-25 and 21-25 scores last Tuesday night. Kennedy Reidman hit nine kills in the South Border match, and was trailed closely by seven from Va...
Students from Mark Pazdernik's and Traci Lura's fifth grade classes at Carrington Elementary School made their annual trip over to the Foster County Museum recently, both to take in the sights and relics of yesteryear, and to spend time in the antique schoolhouse situated behind them on the museum grounds. All had a fun, and educational, time at the Museum!...
