  • Horse sense

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 26, 2023

Holly Inglish's background in speech and occupational therapy has enabled her to watch the growth of children in a social and behavioral setting. "One of my favorite aspects was watching the excitement of each child breaking through barriers and achieving a goal," Inglish said. The love Inglish has for animals, and her desire to keep their bodies functioning in pain-free harmony, has inspired her to start TheraBarn, a family-based company that focuses on providing a wide range of services for...

  • Post 25 edged by Jamestown; blank Kidder Co.

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 26, 2023

The John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds of Carrington got the win they needed in a 3-0 blanking over Kidder County Post 231 on Monday, June 19, at Pirate Field in Steele, but they were several executed pitches away from a major win in Jamestown. Behind another nearly-untouchable outing from veteran lefty Lucas Hendrickson, the 'Birds improved to 2-0 in American Legion Class B District 4 play and 3-1 overall. It could have been 4-0, however, the Class AA Jamestown Post 14 Eagles put up a...

  • Weninger, Belquist run at Nike Outdoor Nationals

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 26, 2023

Incoming high school seniors and Class B individual champions Logan Weninger of Carrington, and Kelsie Belquist of NR-S, got the invitation of their track lifetimes. To pardon the pun, they ran with it. The two participated in the prestigious 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals June 15-18 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., the home track of the University of Oregon Ducks and one of the finest facilities in America, if not the world. Logan, the son of Brad and Lisa Weninger, participated in the...

  • Babe Ruth: Big inning carries Redbirds past 'Sox

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 26, 2023

The Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth team needed a bit of late-game magic on their side to get past rival New Rockford Thursday, June 15, at City Park. The Redbirds overcame a 5-2 deficit with a six-run fifth inning, and came away with an 8-7 comeback win over the Black Sox. In spite of struggles in the third frame, Taylen Mehring got the victory on the mound for the Redbirds. He worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs and 11 hits and notching six strikeouts. Ethan Roller pitched the...

  • Pool ball

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 19, 2023

School's out, and summer is now in full swing at the Carrington Swimming Pool. Competitive basketball games like this one, splashing into the water from the diving board or slides, or just taking a cooling soak, are all popular options....

  • Throwing zeroes: Hendrickson fires no-hitter in opener against Post 30

    Nathan Price and Erik Gjovik|Jun 19, 2023

On Thursday, June 8, the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox took on Carrington Post 25 for their first home game of the Legion baseball season. However, any hopes they might've had about enjoying a smooth home opener were quickly dashed. The Redbirds employed "small ball" to score a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, sending two runners across home plate on a bunt single and a sacrifice fly. Then – already with a 2-run cushion – Lucas Hendrickson walked out to the mound in the bottom of...

  • Tee it up!

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 19, 2023

Carrington Redbirds T-ball players, ranging in age from five to seven years old, took the field for the first organized sporting activity on the new Cal Ripken field at City Park Wednesday evening, June 7. As many of the participants had never played the sport until this summer, triumphs were celebrated, and (mostly) controlled chaos left some fun memories for all who witnessed the event. More photos from this particular game can be found at transcript.smugmug.com....

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 19, 2023

The implementation of a three-division basketball plan by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) on February 8 has spurred momentum on adopting a similar plan for volleyball. At the regular meeting of the NDHSAA Board of Directors on June 6, the governing body accepted a draft proposal for a three-division volleyball plan, which would take effect no earlier than the 2024-25 season. The proposal retains the cutoffs from the basketball plan, with Division AA featuring...

  • Shipman retires after 22 years

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 12, 2023

Over 25 years in public education at local schools, along with directorship of the Carrington Public Schools' technology department, came to an end in May with the retirement of Wayne Shipman. Shipman was employed by the district for 22 years, beginning when he was hired to teach business education classes in the summer of 2001 under the administration of then-Superintendent Dr. Charles Brickner. "He provided me with a great opportunity, and for that, I am thankful. I've enjoyed working at Carri...

  • Cards get one state golf qualifier

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 12, 2023

Like PGA star Phil Mickelson, and borrowing from his baseball tenure, Grady Shipman is a natural right-hander who swings both his clubs and his bat left-handed. That dominant right eye served him well in his "other" spring sport, as the junior earned an individual State Class B Tournament spot at the Region 2 team qualifier at CrossRoads Golf Club Wednesday, May 31. Shipman shot a score of 75, or three over par, to finish four strokes ahead of the automatic individual standard and become CHS's...

  • Shipman on All-State team

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 12, 2023

Grady Shipman's dogged intensity, IQ on the field and drive to succeed, along with trusting his natural abilities, helped him secure a spot on North Dakota's select Class B hardball squad. The Carrington junior was one of 18 boys named to the 2023 All-State Baseball First Team, sponsored by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA). An additional 14 players were named to the Second Team. Grady, the son of CHS Coach Wayne and Denise Shipman, batted .533 with four home runs and 22...

  • The dive to succeed: Weninger takes 400 title; Cardinal boys finish fourth

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

Logan Weninger’s gritty performances, along with his flair for the dramatic, will be the lasting memory of the 2023 North Dakota State Track Meet for the Carrington boys’ team. Fortunately, he wasn’t alone in his time in the Missouri River sun. Big weekends from Weninger, the pole vaulting corps and 4x400-meter relay all meant a big weekend for the Cardinal boys track team at the state meet Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27. The Cards scored 36 points to lead the “best of the rest” in a team race...

  • CHS girls also finish 4th

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

To achieve a team title in 2023 for the Class B girls' track race at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, contending schools didn't necessarily have to worry about depth. This year, it was all about the elite individuals (and a good relay or two) carrying their state contingents to the promised land. Carrington's tallies in the distance races, middle-to-long relays, and pole vault enabled them to secure a fourth-place tie with Bowman County by scoring 38 points in the overall...

  • Titan throwers shoulder the weight

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

All of Griggs/Midkota's points at the 2023 State Track Meet, from both the Titan boys and girls, came from one event. The shot put provided six points for the Titan girls' team, led by a third-place 37 feet, 4 inch heave by senior Asia Becherl. The G-M boys got four points with a fifth-place effort, those courtesy of sophomore Levi Kautzman's big toss of 51 feet. Boys' relay seniors Eli Larson, Wyatt Spickler and Gavin Nelson, and freshman Wayland Sabinash, took 13th in the 4x400 in 3:40.17 and...

  • Contributor to CMC's title has Midkota ties

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 5, 2023

Twenty-eight years ago, her mother put her Midkota Mustang teammates on her back as Most Valuable Player to win the 1995 Class B girls' basketball championship. Now, Megan (Fiechtner) Sparrow's daughter, Daisy, accomplished something similar for the Central McLean (Underwood/Turtle Lake-Mercer/McClusky) Cougars at the 2023 state track meet in Bismarck. Sparrow was the state champion in javelin, throwing an even 124 feet to provide 10 crucial points for the Cougars. Combined with the 4x400...

M-P-B's girls team had one competitor miss qualification by one place, as Sophia Bohl took...
