Carrington came back to the pack slightly with the return to Region 3 play, but in the end, it meant retaining their unbeaten string to begin the season to that point. Grady Shipman matched Kidder County ace Blake Braun strikeout for strikeout (13 each), and a big second inning rally was enough to carry the Cards to a nailbiting 5-4 win over the Wolves Friday, April 28, in a matchup of league contenders. In the nightcap, it was the Cards' three runs in the sixth inning that broke a 4-4 deadlock...
The Cardinal boys’ golf program made it onto the course for their first meet of the season Tuesday, May 2. Leading the way for the Cards was senior Carter Larson with an 18-hole score of 88. At Carrington High School's annual Honors Night Tuesday evening, April 25, a trio of students were recognized for their choice to pursue careers and a cause greater than themselves. Alexis Wangen, McCoy Beckley and Wyatt Neuman received the 2023 Patriot Award, given to students who are currently, or have stated plans to serve in any branch of the armed forces upon graduation. The certificates given to award recipients laud the students for having "...chosen the incredibly noble path to serve...
Instead of largely taking what they wanted in their first two blowout wins of the spring baseball campaign, the Carrington Cardinals were merely content to accept what the Velva/Drake-Anamoose Aggies offered them last Monday. The Cards finished with just four hits in a 10-3 nonregion victory in Velva, but benefited from 16 total free baserunners via nine walks and seven errors. In the win, junior shortstop Grady Shipman hit his second home run of the spring, a first inning solo shot, and scored...
Lingering snow and field wetness has once again done a number on spring athletic schedules. Softball Carrington’s girls softball game with Thompson last Monday, which was moved to THS after originally being a home date, has been postponed to Monday, May 8. Times have been yet to be determined. In its place, the team traveled to Minot for indoor games with the Larimore Polar Bears Monday and Northern Lights on Tuesday under the practice bubble at MSU’s Herb Parker Stadium. A brief recap of tho...

Sometimes, you just have to go where the grass is greener, even if it is artificial. And sunny to the tune of mid-to-high 50-degrees, and no snow on the field to speak of. The Carrington baseball team finally got their spring underway, and did it with style after spending several weeks cooped up indoors in the wrestling room's batting cage. And it looks as if the Cards could be a contender again in Region 3, if a 17-0 combined no-hitter against the South Prairie/Max Royals at Corbett Field in...
It's a small sample size, but the statistics have been mind-blowing thus far for the Carrington Cardinal baseball team. After two games in the books, the Cards' collective batting average is .424 (14-for-33 in both contests), their earned run average is 0.00, and they've struck out 24 batters in 10 innings. CHS kept their roll on with a 15-0 Region 3 victory over the SNR Black Sox Tuesday afternoon at Jim Johnson Park in New Rockford. For the second straight game, Grady Shipman drew the start on...

Temperatures outside are climbing into the 40's and 50's and heralding the late arrival of spring in North Dakota, but snow on much of the state's athletic fields are still hanging on for dear life. In Carrington, the complications of that snow, still over a foot-and-a-half high in spots, have led to the postponement of the start of three sports seasons. Though the Cardinal track team has gotten in two indoor meets in Fargo so far, their outdoor season will have to wait for at least one more...
Kids got their baskets and bags ready for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, held this year at the Armory in Carrington Saturday afternoon, April 8. This year's hunt featured just short of 9,000 eggs, and is put together by a group of community volunteers. Efforts to this end were coordinated by Jana Lesmeister and Karlee Griffin, and sponsored by the Carrington Convention and Visitor's Bureau....
The winter that steadfastly refuses to end has led to local high school track teams backfilling their schedules with indoor meets. Carrington's boys and girls traveled to NDSU's Shelly Ellig complex Friday, March 31, for the second straight week, this time to participate in the Bison Snowbird Meet. Both Cardinal squads placed eighth in their respective team races, taking on a field mostly composed of Fargo-area Class A schools, the two Grand Forks programs and a few Minnesota teams. Like they...
North Dakota State University track and field athlete Payton Smith, son of Kyle and Layne Smith of Carrington, has made a name for himself in one of the sport's quirkier events. Smith just completed his indoor season for the Bison, and now hits the outdoor circuit as a 2,000 and 3,000-meter steeplechase specialist. So far, he has done very well in the green and yellow, having completed two spring events. On March 18, Smith competed at the University of South Florida in Tampa at the USF Bulls Inv...
Ahead of the 2023 spring outdoor track season, Carrington's Logan Weninger decided to get a leg up on his competition. For the past few months, the speedy Cardinal junior has been competing as an unattached athlete in collegiate indoor meets, as there is no officially-sanctioned high school season in North Dakota. Weninger's head start paid off with two individual event victories at the State Class B Indoor Track Meet at NDSU's Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility, and he also anchored...
On paper, the city of Carrington is a Class B town. But if you delve deep into the history of wrestling in the Central City, it started, at least at the high school level, as a Class A program. It's in that spirit that the Pitcrew youth wrestling team takes on opposing city programs orders of magnitude larger than they are in dual competition, and not only survives, but thrives in some cases. Not to mention, they do pretty well individually, too. The Pitcrew, along with other older Carrington...

Even if just for the first half, the big stage didn't affect the M-P-B Thunder one single bit. After 16 minutes had elapsed, Coach Bob Young's club was right there with the third-seeded Beulah Miners, enjoying a 21-19 lead. The size and physicality of the Miners wore the Thunder down in the third quarter, and the lid on the rim closed shut as part of a massive run for the Region 7 champions to take a 48-31 win in the quarterfinal round Thursday, March 16, at the Bismarck Event Center. "We came...
