  • Alone at the top: CHS earns #1 District 5 seed

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 6, 2023

In last week's Independent, a three-way tiebreaker scenario was explained, where the Carrington girls' basketball team could still earn a number one District 5 seed even with a narrow loss to E-K-M, and if Oakes were to win their final two games. Turns out, the Cards were in no mood to do the math. With a 49-41 win over the Rebels, Carrington rendered that point moot, finishing with a perfect six wins in six outings in district play and earning a first-round bye in next week's tournament in...

  • Out of the doldrums: Griggs/Midkota gets first win

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 6, 2023

Sometimes, that first taste of success can be contagious. The Griggs/Midkota Titan girls, in the midst of an 0-14 start to the season, had some close calls along the way, but the dam finally burst in their favor in a big way Monday night, January 30. G-M rolled over a completely outmatched Barnes County North team with 20-point quarters in each period of play, and got their first victory of the winter, 88-11. Kaylee Johnson camped inside for much of the contest, and put down numerous...

  • Cards eke out one-point wins

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 6, 2023

Say what one will about the Carrington boys' basketball team's season thus far, but one thing is for sure: They are never boring. Down six with over half of the fourth quarter to go, Carrington made the plays down the stretch to take an emotional one-point thriller, 41-40, over the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes on the road Friday night, Janaury 27. "It was a big win, as we get to control our destiny in the district and try and cinch up a number two seed with a win or two next week," Head...

  • Linton-HMB sweeps M-P-B double dip

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 6, 2023

In Linton Monday night, January 30, the M-P-B Thunder basketball teams were back in action for key District 6 contests with the Linton-HMB Lions. For both cases, it was disappointment, as the Lady Lions took a 47-38 win over the Thunder, and the boys' team edged M-P-B by the slimmest of margins, 60-59. The opener featured three Lion players carrying the scoring load, led by 17 points from junior guard Allie Dockter. Fourteen points came from Emma Weiser, and Jersey Vogel, a sophomore, had 11 to...

  • Titans upend E-K-M in District 5 play

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 6, 2023

Griggs/Midkota had a sluggish push out of the starting blocks in their district game versus the E-K-M Rebels, but got progressively better as the game went on. The Titans overcame a nine-point deficit at the end of the first quarter, but fought possession by possession to take a 51-46 win over the Rebels in Edgeley on Saturday, January 28. Seven threes helped turn the tide for G-M, with sophomore Brady Haugen's 21 points and four treys proving decisive. Carter Spitzer had the other three long...

  • Triple crown: Cardinaires win high kick, jazz, pom at State NDADD

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

Over two days at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, the Carrington Cardinaires stepped on the competition floor five times. That was enough to make a lasting impression on the judges and allow the troupe to take home three more Class B category championships at the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill (NDADD) State Dance Team Championship. The Cardinaires won high kick, pom and jazz, edging out Barnes County North and Central McLean (Underwood/Turtle...

  • Second half lulls fatal to CHS cagers in loss to unbeatens

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

Two different schools took on the Carrington basketball programs Saturday afternoon, January 21, both looking to extend season-long undefeated status. The newly-minted #1 team in Class B girls, the Rugby Panthers, and the fifth-ranked Ellendale Cardinal boys almost got the bite from the upset bug. In this case, the term "almost" was the overriding theme, as the CHS Cards had third-quarter leads against Ellendale (by seven) and were within a possession of the Panthers at the start of the fourth....

  • Cards oust #5 Oakes, best Loboes in District 5 battles

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

Carrington's girls are just one win away from going unbeaten in their District 5 conference slate following two impressive victories this past week. On January 19, the Cards played the third of their four consecutive top 10 Class B poll opponents, the fifth-rated Oakes Tornadoes, and passed that test with a 59-48 upset win in Tornado Alley. A sustained defensive effort carried the day for CHS in the victory, and another balanced scoring sheet helped Coach Andy Braaten's ballclub get back into...

  • Swishing at the stripe: Cards outlast BCN in 10-point win

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

The final score was a 10-point win in the books for the Carrington boys' basketball team, 52-42. But that didn't begin to tell the full story of a whirlwind fourth quarter for the Cardinals that allowed them to come out on top against Barnes County North in Leal Monday night, January 23. "BCN is an aggressive team with a lot of athleticism from their guards, and they do a nice job of taking you out of your comfort zone offensively," said Head Coach Tim Ranum. "We did a nice job of attacking...

  • CHS girls 2nd, boys 9th at Storhaug

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

The Carrington wrestling teams had numerous placers emerge from the two days of mat mayhem at the Nick Storhaug Invitational at Lisbon High School Friday and Saturday, January 20-21. Two individual championships, one apiece on the boys’ and girls’ sides, came the way of the Cards in the two-day event. The CHS girls scored 153 team points to place second, 18 points behind the Mandan Braves, and the boys took ninth with 89.5 points as the home Broncos won the meet, 260-220, over runner-up fin...

  • Thunder take down G-M Titan boys, 58-46

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

Like they did at the Stutsman County Tournament, the Griggs/Midkota Titans got off to a fast start against the visiting M-P-B Thunder in Glenfield on January 19. And history did end up repeating itself with the Thunder's response, with big second and third quarters to oust the Titans for the second time this season, 58-46. Josh Moser led M-P-B with 18 points, and Rylen Wick had another good game with 14 points. Gage Magstadt and Sawyer Wanzek also played valuable parts in the win with games of...

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 30, 2023

The season of streaks for the M-P-B Thunder girls continues, as they recorded their fifth straight win with a 67-49 District 6 win over the South Border Mustangs Friday, January 20, in Medina. Sophomore Maddie Gefroh's 19 points, to go along with 17 from Allison Thomas and 14 more by Lilly Bohl, helped the Thunder improve to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the district standings. In the win, M-P-B canned nine three-pointers, eight of those combined from Thomas and Bohl. They scored 47 of their total...

  • Know when to hold 'em

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The lure of easy money, while sitting at the table with five cards in your hand, chips stacked in front of you and thousands of dollars riding on a single play, is undeniable to the thrill-seeking gambler. But to hear Carrington resident Arlie Brandvold tell it, it's not necessarily the most high-flying lifestyle to undertake. "It's definitely not as glorious as it seems," he laughed. "Most nights, you get home late at night and just sleep all day." This past season, Brandvold had one of his...

  • All the right moves

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Carrington Cardinaire dancers in this row, left to right, Jazmyn Ybarra, Elayna Konschak and Tessa Mittleider, show their spirit in a kick line as part of the team's pom routine at halftime of last Tuesday night's boys basketball game against May-Port-CG. Other dancers in the background include Reagan Wolsky (behind Mittleider), Madalina Ciubotareanu and Tesslin Lura. The Cardinaires made their way to Grand Forks this past weekend for the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill (NDADD)...

  • Patriot missiles: Cards sustain 65-53 defeat to May-Port-CG

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The length and height of the May-Port-CG Patriots caused no end of problems early for the Carrington Cardinal boys' basketball team Tuesday night, January 17. Even down 20 points in the third quarter, the level of fight in the Cards never dwindled, and they threatened to single digits on several occasions before ultimately taking a 65-53 loss to the Pats in the East Gym. The shooting stroke of MPCG's Xyler Carlson, along with the matchup problem presented by 6'6" guard Landon Koenig, was on...

  • A tough nut to crack: Cards routed by Squirrels in girls/boys doubleheader

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Two top-10 squads entertained the Carrington Cardinals in their trip to Casselton for their annual twinbill with the Central Cass Squirrels. For the fifth-ranked Cardinal girls, it was a painful crash down to earth, as the furry acorn-hoarders knocked the Cards out of the tree of unbeatens with a 65-32 loss. It wasn't any better in the boys' game, with the second-rated Squirrels having their way with their CHS counterparts, 63-28. In game one, Carrington stayed somewhat close in the first...

  • Thunder sweep Strasburg-Zeeland at Civic Center

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Both the M-P-B boys and girls were in action for District 6 play, with their traditional neutral-court showdown with Strasburg-Zeeland at the Jamestown Civic Center last Tuesday night, January 17. And, as has been in recent years, the Thunder didn't have much difficulty with the Clippers, as the girls took a 56-16 win and the boys followed by taking the night game, 51-23. Isabel Schmidt, Allison Thomas and Lilly Bohl combined for seven treys and half of the Thunder's total scoring output,...

  • #1 Honkers survive Cards' challenge

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

When the chance to prove yourself is given, you take it, and records can be thrown out the window. Carrington had an open date on their schedule with the decision to withhold their varsity from facing Barnes County North earlier in the week, and instead elected to take on the number one team in the state at Bismarck State College Friday night, January 13. The Kenmare/Bowbells Honkers needed a spurt to upend a Cardinal team still smarting from a 33-point loss to Central Cass the day before, and...

  • Titans fall to Ellendale, give Loboes scare in loss

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Doubleheaders were the in-thing for the Griggs/Midkota Titan basketball teams, and Griggs County Central High School was the venue for all four games played January 13 and 17 opposite District 5 opponents Ellendale and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. The unbeaten Cardinal boys stayed that way with a 58-37 win over the Titans, but G-M used every ounce of their fighting spirit four nights later to nearly pull off an upset over the Loboes, ultimately going down to defeat, 48-44. Brady Haugen scored 13...

  • CHS hosts State B JV. . . finally

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

An idea that was to witness its genesis in 2020 came to fruition three years later, following two instances of weather cancellation and one to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Central City played host to the State Class B Junior Varsity Wrestling Tournament at Carrington High School Saturday, January 14, with schools from throughout the state trotting out their younger grapplers for some valuable big-match chops in a largely low-pressure environment. CHS, the host school, placed fifth among 19...

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

A dual girls' wrestling triangular that was not on the original schedule was held Friday night, January 13, in Carrington. And the Cards kept their winning streak against East Region teams alive with wins of 48-27 against the Pembina Co. North Grizzlies, and 42-36 over the combined Fargo team with wrestlers from Davies, North and South high schools. Individual match winners from the two duals are as follows: Carrington 48, Pembina Co. North 27 Friday, January 13, 2023 at Carrington High School...

  • Thunder fall to Loboes, Rebels

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder girls have hit a rough patch of their 2022-23 schedule, and are mired in a six-game losing streak. The Thunder took two competitive defeats to a pair of respectable District 5 opponents in LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, 35-31, and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier, 47-37. Game action with L-L-M was close throughout, though the Loboes did not make their own lives easier with a very poor 10-for-28 performance at the free-throw stripe which included 0-for-7 in the fourth...

  • M-P-B girls win, but boys fall to Ellendale

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

M-P-B had a mixed result in their Saturday, January 14, doubleheader at Ellendale, as the girls took a 16-point win, 48-32, and the boys fell to the fifth-ranked and still unbeaten Cardinals, 68-43. The Thunder's Allison Thomas finished with 17 points and Lilly Bohl added 12 in the intra-Region 3 victory, which improved the girls' record to 5-6. Ellendale was paced by nine points from Kali Norton. In the nightcap, high-flying EHS rode 21 points by Mason Molan, along with double-digit nights...

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 16, 2023

Carrington's return to the wrestling mats for the new year, at least on the girls' side, featured the return of one competitor to action for her first matches this campaign. Junior Taya Lura healed sufficiently from an elbow injury to take home seventh place at 105 pounds at the Bismarck Rotary, going 2-2 with two pins in the process. Three other Cardinal wrestlers placed at the Rotary, led by fifth place showings by Mercedes Lura at 120 pounds and Ashley Lindberg at 250, and Khendra Garcia's...

Senior Trace Hoggarth had the best individual finish of third place at 120 pounds, with three pins, a major decision and decision win comprising his five victories. His only loss came to an undefeated Watertown, S.D., wrestler, Sloan Johannsen, in the semifinal round. At 152, Kael Kovar took four of his six trips to the mat to place...
