If the Ellendale Cardinals shoot like they did at this year’s Stutsman County Tournament, there most likely won’t be a Region 3 program that can hang with them come postseason time. The back-to-back tournament title-winners made it a three-peat with a 69-52 win over the M-P-B Thunder Saturday night, January 7, at the Jamestown Civic Center, on the strength of 11 three-pointers. And that wasn’t even their best long-range shooting night of the tourney, as EHS drained 14 trifectas in a 72-47 win o...
On Thursday, January 5, the Carrington Cardinals kept their winning ways going with a dominant 66-20 victory over the Cardinals of Ellendale. Carrington, by now well known for their full-court pressure, stuck to what's been working for them on Thursday, and Ellendale couldn't cope. CHS piled on the pressure all game long, rendering Ellendale incapable of generating consistent offense. Carrington juniors Madison Johnson and Kacie Rexin were a particularly sharp thorn in their side, as the two of...
As the luck of the schedule maker would have it, it took three full days before Carrington and Griggs/Midkota renewed acquaintances. Fresh off the Cards’ 55-44 win in the consolation championship in the Stutsman County Tournament, the Cards and Titans locked up once again, this time in a District 5 counter at the East Gym. A 13-1 run for Carrington set the tone right from the whistle, and they withstood an early spurt of the Titans’ own to take a 24-point victory, 61-37, and improve to 2-0 in di...
The Carrington boys wrestlers didn't win all four of their duals in last week's worth of triangulars in Casselton (January 5) and Lisbon (January 10), but they took the most important ones. In a Region 2 three-team dual meet, the Cards took a 35-33 squeaker over the Central Cass Squirrels and a 51-30 win against HWC to keep their regional dual record perfect at 4-0 for the winter. CHS didn't have much of any luck against the Class B power Lisbon Broncos five nights later, falling in 51-30...
On Tuesday, January 10, the Carrington girls wrestling team traveled to Lisbon to compete in their third and fourth duals of the year. The Cards faced the host Broncos, and took a 54-27 victory mostly on forfeit points. Even with that, Carrington still recorded three pin victories and dropped a close overtime match at 120 pounds. Another match with East Region implications followed, as CHS took on West Fargo United, a co-op of the three West Fargo high schools (WFHS, Sheyenne and Horace)....
The biggest collection of high school wrestling talent in the nation descended upon the Fargodome for two days for the annual Rumble on the Red tournament Thursday and Friday, December 29-30. In the boys' division, varsity and junior varsity brackets were contested at 14 weight classes, and two Minnesota programs came out on top when all was said and done. New Prague and Waconia, to the southwest and due west of the Twin Cities metro area, respectively, won the varsity and JV divisions....
As Minnesota schools were dominating the boys' varsity and JV divisions at the Rumble on the Red in Fargo, the home state girls were representing quite well in their portion of the mega-tournament. Nine of the top 10 schools, led by Bismarck High's 206 points, were from North Dakota, and the Flickertail State grabbed the top four podium positions. Carrington's first-year girls program had two wrestlers make placement matches, and the team came in 14th place overall with 74 points. Junior Kylie S...
The massive snowstorms had other ideas, but now the Carrington wrestling programs are getting a few more dual matches under their belts. Lisbon High School will host a dual triangular for both the boys and girls wrestling teams on Tuesday, January 10. Both weigh-ins will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. at LHS. At 5:30, the Carrington girls will wrestle Lisbon on Mat 2, and Napoleon boys take on Lisbon on Mat 1. The boys schedule will follow with Carrington vs. Napoleon and Carrington vs. Lisbon, and...
The Griggs/Midkota Titans hoped to build on the momentum of their two-point win over NR-S 10 days earlier, and returned to the hardwood post-Christmas with a nonregion contest against Dakota Prairie on December 30. And a hot start for the Titan shooters helped them accomplish that aim, with a 55-35 win over the Knights in Binford thanks to double-digit scoring nights by Eli Larson and Brady Haugen. Larson scored a team-high 14 points, all on two-point field goals, and Haugen splashed in two...
Carrington's pressure defense forced 16 total steals, and converted time and time again in transition to earn a 74-16 win over Griggs/Midkota Friday night, December 30, at the East Gym. The first District 5 game for either side was a makeup game originally scheduled for December 15, but postponed due to weather. Haley Wolsky led all players with 22 points, with much of that coming off steals and quick baskets. Olivia Threadgold had 11 points and five rebounds, and Edyn Hoornaert finished with...
Only a few minutes into the third quarter of their mid-Christmas break matchup with Langdon/Edmore/Munich at the East Gym, Carrington found themselves staring up at a six-point deficit, 28-22. Nothing that a 19-0 outburst can't cure. The central Cards fired up the afterburners and zoomed past the far northern redbirds for an impressive 41-34 win over L/E/M to keep their flawless record of 7-0 intact. CHS' final score was deceptively close, as the visitor Cardinals got two three-pointers late....
There's nothing like that new building smell. The lengthy process of High Plains Equipment's construction of their new complex on the northwest edge of Carrington has been delayed on some fronts by circumstances beyond the implement dealer's control, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and resultant supply chain issues. But that doesn't put a damper on High Plains's successful move from their old location at 6719 Highway 200 (known as Erickson Implement in the recent past), to a much-larger building...
Randy Peterson's extensive career on the bowling lanes continues, with yet another two instances of greatness. Peterson completed a perfect 300 game for the 19th time, turning the trick in the eighth game of 12 total at the North Dakota Bowling Proprietors Association (NDBPA) State Scratch Team event at Dickinson's Paragon Bowl in early December. His scratch score of 2,662 was good enough for sixth place individually, but he combined with three others to win the state team title for "ND Storm"...
Beginning its 24th year of service, the Canadian Pacific Railroad's Holiday Train made one of its 168 live stops Saturday, December 17, in Carrington. The train returned to the Central City following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which virtual shows were presented. The train's purpose is to raise money for local food banks during the holiday season, and since its inception in 1999, CPR has raised more than $21 million dollars and collected five million pounds of food...
In the entirety of their high school volleyball careers, Kadyn Mehring of Carrington and Megan Moser of Medina never so much as played in a state Class B tournament. They certainly made up for that shortfall when they went to the collegiate level and suited up for the University of Jamestown program. Four years later for Mehring and two for Moser, the pair are basking in the glory of the Jimmies' first-ever National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship team...
It wasn't always efficient, but the Carrington Cardinal boys got the job done in the end in their third outing of the season. Behind senior Jack Erickson's 16 points, the Cards took home a 56-40 nonregion win over the visiting Dakota Prairie Knights in the East Gym Tuesday night, December 20. Erickson used his lanky, long-armed 6'2" frame to get to the basket on several trips down the floor courtesy of nifty backdoor passing plays. Forward Hudson Schmitz scored 12 points with a solid inside...
Griggs/Midkota had a rough beginning to their boys' basketball season, sustaining double-digit losses to the May-Port-CG Patriots and Warwick Warriors in action from December 17 and 19. At GCCHS in Cooperstown, the Titans fell by a 68-46 final on Saturday, then made the short jaunt up Highway 20 and took a 54-39 defeat to the Warriors in the Monday night game. Wyatt Spickler (14 points) and Eli Larson (12) carried the offensive load for G-M in the MPCG game, and Spickler, along with Carter...
Three days worth of falling, blowing and drifting snow put a sizable dent into the schedule of Carrington athletic teams. The Cardinal girls’ basketball team’s game versus NR-S in Carrington, originally scheduled for December 13, was postponed until Thursday, February 2, starting with JV play at 6 p.m. In addition to that, the girls were also forced to hold off their slated December 15 game with the Griggs/Midkota Titans until this upcoming Friday, December 30. Junior varsity will begin play at...
Almost half a week's worth of being stuck in their houses, while over two feet of snow dumped on the state in some places, made the Carrington Cardinal basketball teams more than a bit stir crazy. The release of that pent-up energy showed in a Saturday, December 17, matinee doubleheader in the East Gym with nonregion opponent Benson County. CHS' girls started the afternoon with a 64-13 rout over the Wildcats to improve to 5-0 on the season, and the boys won their second game in as many outings,...
Try as they might, the Carrington girls' basketball team couldn't find that extra gear to pull away from the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians. Nursing a 12-point lead at one point, the shots went ice-cold for the Cards late, and FW-M hit a few clutch baskets to make it interesting, cutting down to a two-possession game late. Still, it meant Carrington's hot streak to begin the season remained intact, thanks to a 48-44 win over the Indians to improve to 6-0 on the season. "Our shooting was...
Carrington High School's Cardinaires dance team started the 2022-23 season by winning three Class B first place trophies at their opening competition. The Cardinaires put their precision, spirit and artistry on display at the West Fargo Packatahna Dance Invitational Saturday, December 10, and took the high kick, pom and jazz honors for the small schools in attendance. This year's team is once again coached by Tressa VanRay and Lindsy Pavelko, and returns a very well-seasoned and talented troupe...
Wrestling: It's not just for the guys anymore. This year's Al Larson Carrington Invitational Tournament Saturday, December 10, saw the debut of the girls division in the West Gym, in addition to the traditional boys grappling powers taking over the East and the junior high wrestlers also taking to the mats. The Cards finished just two points out of first place in the girls' tournament, getting second with 134 points to South Border's 136. In the boys division, longtime juggernaut Lisbon easily...
In the dual portion of Carrington’s two-day wrestling extravaganza which ended with the Al Larson Carrington Invitational, the Cardinal boys and girls teams finished with an impressive collective effort. The CHS boys went 3-1 on the south mat in the East Gym Friday night, December 9, getting a big 40-36 Region 2 win over Pembina Co. North, and victories of 52-18 and 45-24 over Bishop Ryan and Napoleon. Their only loss came to the New Salem-Almont Holsteins, 48-36. In their first dual match as a...
Last year featured a bit of a learning curve for the Carrington Cardinals in a season just over .500 at 12-10, but four games in, this campaign already looks to be generating impressive returns from the team's young talent. The CHS girls made good on an early season statement victory, pulling away from then sixth-ranked Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier and taking a 71-57 upset in the championship game of the Stutsman County Tournament Saturday, December 10, at the Jamestown Civic Center. Carrington now...
From 3-18 in 2020 to 7-14 in 2021 and 11-12 last season, the Carrington boys' basketball team has been trending upward as their current senior class has gained seasoning. Last season, the Cards fell in the Region 3 first round to Linton-HMB. Coach Tim Ranum hopes that this season is the one where they put it all together. "We're returning eight lettermen," said Ranum, "and have three guys who are all potential All-District caliber players." After the graduation of All-District selection Lucas...
