  • Tornadoes oust Cards in four sets; Oakes earns #2 seed

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 17, 2022

It wasn't the five-set marathon that these two evenly-matched programs have been accustomed to playing over the last few years, but the Carrington Cardinals and Oakes Tornadoes met up for some hotly-contested tension at the nets in Tornado Alley Tuesday night, October 11. The Cards fell in four games to the Tornadoes, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25 and 18-25, giving Oakes (5-1 District 5) the number two seed for the upcoming District 5 Volleyball Tournament at Barnes County North in Leal October 27, 28 and...

  • Lending a helping hand

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

North Dakota, when you think about it, is essentially one big small town spread out over 70,704 square miles. And for the necessities of everyday life, neighbors are always willing to make life on the prairies and rolling fields easier for each other when one runs into difficulty. David Young, who farms five miles south of Sykeston with his wife, Gina, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic adenocarcinoma in his liver and bone on July 27. Their daughter, Emily, said that the primary...

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

It took a few relocations and different job descriptions along the way, but once Linda Lemer decided to put down roots, she settled in for the long haul. And 40 years later, she's now ready to take on the next challenges and adventures in her life with her husband, Joel. Lemer is retiring from the Chieftain Conference Center's front desk, having put in her four full decades of service exactly on October 3. "There have been a lot of good employees here, along with meeting great guests from...

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

Griggs/Midkota laced up their cleats to take on the 9B Region 2 co-leaders, the Maple River (Hope-Page/Maple Valley) Raiders, in Hope on Friday, September 30. The Raiders kept their undefeated mark in the region intact with a 40-8 win over the Titans, and set up a titanic showdown with the May-Port-CG Patriots for the Region 2 title this past Friday in Mayville. Scoring summary and stats from the game were not available. Both MPCG and Maple River have clinched 9-man playoff berths, while the...

  • Net crew breezes past Benson Co., BCN in sweeps

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

Carrington's experience shone through in a pair of straight-set wins over Benson County in Maddock and Barnes County North in the East Gym in matches played September 29 and October 4. The Cards took on a very-green Benson County team as part of a non-region match, as the Wildcats' starting lineup consists mostly of freshmen and sophomores, and one senior in the mix. CHS took a 25-16, 25-6 and 25-10 win in that game, and nine different players had kills, paced by Haley Wolsky's nine. The senior...

  • M-P-B tames Wolves; outlasts N-G-S

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan, playing very well as of late, hasn't quite had that string of success translate to league matches. An 0-2 start to the District 6 season meant the Thunder were in need of some positive vibes heading into the second part of the slate. They would do that, taking a three-set win against the Kidder County Wolves in Medina on September 29, and were pushed to the brink for a 15-13 squeaker in the deciding set five for a big 3-2 triumph on the road over the...

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 10, 2022

For 28 years running, the Panther Booster Invitational in Rugby has been home to one of the biggest Class B meets of the cross country fall season. Carrington, Griggs/Midkota and HWC were the local teams in attendance for the meet, which brought in 27 girls’ teams and 30 boys’ teams to the heart of America. Cardinal senior Baylee Lura finished 31st overall (22:07.83) out of 110 runners in the girls’ race to lead Carrington’s contingent. Down the table, Macy Fiebiger was 61st in 23:40.7...

  • Cards take 8th in team race

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 3, 2022

As the third team qualifier out of the loaded Region 2, Carrington's expectations vacillated between no pressure, and anxiousness from one particular golfer to show her mettle among the state's best. By that measure, the 2022 State Class B Girls Golf Tournament, held at Minot's Souris Valley Golf Course, ended up being a good showing for the Cards, with an eighth place team score of 784. Leading the charge for CHS was junior Kacie Rexin, with her two-day total of 160 tying her for fourth place...

  • Homecoming fever. . . CATCH IT!

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 3, 2022

Big plays, sustained drives, stingy defense and clean play, along with the pageantry and excitement of Homecoming Week, all added up to a big victory for Carrington Friday night, September 23. In what was easily their best game of the fall six weeks in, the Cards took home a 28-6 win over the Park River Area Aggies, improved to 2-4 and suddenly are squarely in the Region 2 playoff conversation. Head Coach Kyle Smith couldn't have been any happier with how his team rose to the challenge. "It's...

  • In battle of birds, Carrington wins in 4

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 3, 2022

With their starting setter busy lighting the State B golf world on fire (see related article on page 7), Carrington had a few early struggles getting consistent offense Tuesday night, September 27, against Ellendale. Even without the services of Kacie Rexin, Isabel Wendel filled in very capably in her stead with 30 assists, and the local Cardinals took a four-set win, 19-25, 25-10, 25-15 and 25-22 in the East Gym. In set one, the Cards had difficulty with Ellendale's height, led by middle...

  • Split for Thunder with win over Miners, loss to Lions

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 3, 2022

M-P-B took their 11th victory of the season with a three-set win in Wilton over Wilton-Wing (25-14, 25-11 and 25-21), but the two-time defending Region 3 and Class B champions, Linton-HMB, stopped the Thunder in their tracks five nights later. Behind big kill nights from Maddie Gefroh (11) and Allison Thomas (10), the Thunder took a quick win in the non-region battle with the Region 5 Miners. Serving stars included Kalen Kinzell and Brynn Sorenson, each with three aces. Gefroh also had two...

  • G-M swept by MPCG, blank Nelson Co. Chargers

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 3, 2022

Sometimes, the records don't lie. The May-Port-CG Patriots have mostly rolled through the first half of their season schedule on the volleyball court, and their three losses this season have come to top-ranked and undefeated Northern Cass (twice) and two-time defending state champion Linton-HMB. So, the Patriots took on the Griggs/Midkota Titans at their alternate home in the Finley-Sharon gym, and showed why they could challenge for a state berth out of Region 2 with a quick 7-25, 10-25 and...

  • Playing Spoiler: Cards win first game over Grafton

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 26, 2022

Not so long ago, when the old Stadium '76 bleacher section still stood, the Grafton Spoilers got two late scores in rapid succession to prevent a Carrington win. This year, with both programs now mired at the bottom of the Region 2 table, it was the Cardinals' turn to return the favor. After watching the Spoilers come back from a 14-point deficit to tie the score in the final minutes, CHS broke the deadlock, then got an emphatic interception return for a score to seal their first win of the 2022...

  • First 'W' for Titans, too: Snap 12-game losing streak

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 26, 2022

Good feelings, which have been in short supply thus far for the Griggs/Midkota Titan football program, rose to the surface following a 24-0 blanking over the Enderlin Eagles Friday, September 16, to give G-M their first win this season. In fact, it was the Titans' first victory in a 12-game span, dating back to October 16, 2020, when they defeated Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page, 26-22, in the final week of that season. Titan sophomore quarterback Brady Haugen scored all three touchdowns. He scored...

    Kyrie O'Connor and Erik Gjovik|Sep 26, 2022

For New Rockford-Sheyenne's Homecoming 2022, the Rockets hosted Carrington on Thursday, September 15, and the two historical rivals gave the paying customers in the NR-S Gym a great show. With the recent rotation change, the Rockets thought they would finally have the chance to beat the Cardinals. But to no avail, the Rockets just couldn't defeat them, falling in a five-set epic to the Cards, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 15-25 and 11-15. Before the start of the game, varsity players from both NR-S and...

The Thunder went 5-1 at the Valley City Optimist Tournament Saturday, September 17, to take second place overall and improve to 10-6 for the fall campaign. M-P-B's lone loss in the six matches came to unbeaten Northern Cass in the championship, by a very respectable final tally of 25-20 in both sets. On their way to the finals, M-...

Carrington's showing was 44 strokes behind regional champion Fargo Oak Grove's winning tally of 344, while the Kindred Vikings (350) were six shots behind the Grovers when all cards were tabulated. The Cards' Kacie Rexin dropped one place off her runner-up region finish from last year, taking third, but improved by five strokes from that...
