CNDC Meet On the boys side, the Hornets picked...
The Hornet boys and girls track teams are off and running. . . and throwing and jumping and doing all track and field things early in the season. The Hornets recently traveled to NDSU in Fargo to compete in the "unofficial" state Class B indoor competition on Saturday, March 26. The boys team looks to be a "competitor" for a state title, and saw some really good things at the indoor meet. Bringing home first place finishes were Garin Opdahl in the pole vault, Madden Thorson in the 60 meter hurdl...
Harvey-Wells County made a nice run, winning 16 of their final 19 games, but those three losses came at the hands of the top ranked and undefeated Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians. The Hornets won two of three in District 7 competition before falling to the Indians in the district final, and they defeated St. John and North Star in the Region 4 Tourney before falling at the hands of the Indians, once more culminating in a very respectable regional runner-up trophy. HWC 56, North Star 49...
Whether it was the tough defense played by both teams or some untimely turnovers by each, the HWC Hornets escaped the grip, scoring 18 in the final quarter to defeat St. John, 45-37, in one of four opening round games at the Region 4 Boys Basketball Tournament held at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Monday, March 7. In a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties, the first quarter was just that. A three from Zavier Parisien early put the Woodchucks up three. Trailing 9-8, Alex...
Harvey-Wells County put up a valiant effort for 24 minutes, but couldn’t keep pace with the top-ranked team in North Dakota, falling in the championship game of the District 7 Tournament to Four Winds-Minnewaukan, 69-43. HWC had a nice tournament with a dominating win over Benson County and a hard fought victory over Warwick in the semifinals before bowing out to the Indians in the final. Following the tournament, Tate Grossman was named to the District 7 All-Tournament team, and Grossman, a...
The HWC boys’ basketball team finished the regular season like every head coach would like - on a win streak. This particular streak for HWC moved to four games this week with double-digit road victories over Washburn and Towner-Granville-Upham. HWC 66, Washburn 56 It took nearly the full 32 minutes to put away the Washburn Cardinals, but in the end, HWC did just that with a seven-point second half advantage, and a 10-point victory in Washburn on Thursday, February 17. Washburn took the advantage in the first quarter, as Aiden Parrill hit t...
The Langdon/Edmore/Munich girls basketball team wasted little time in eliminating the Harvey-Wells County Hornets in the Region 4 Girls Basketball Tournament held Monday, February 21 at the Devils Lake Sports Center. Three-point plays were in abundance in the first quarter for the Cardinals, as Jaya Henderson hit two and Jalynn Swanson connected on another. Morgan Freije tallied an old-fashioned 3-pointer and Swanson just missed a free throw to add another as L/E/M jumped out on the Hornets, 22-5, after one. HWC played much better in the...
Harvey-Wells County started strong and kept the momentum throughout the game, defeating Griggs-Midkota by 25 points in Glenfield on Thursday, February 10. Five Hornets found the scoring column in the first quarter, and four of them scored at least four points as the Hornets opened the game up scoring 20 points in the first and holding the Griggs-Midkota offense to just a three pointer and four free- throws in the first eight minutes. The scoring evened out in the second as Jaxon Gronneberg scored eight for the Titans, while Gabe Allmaras and...
The Harvey-Wells County girls’ basketball team won two games at the recently-held District 7 Tournament in Maddock and earned a spot in the upcoming Region 4 Tournament starting February 21 at the Devils Lake Sports Center. The Hornets opened up with a win over New Rockford-Sheyenne, and then lost to Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the second-ranked Class B team in the state. HWC punched their regional entry with a decisive win over Warwick in the qualifying game on February 14. Following the game, A...
The Harvey-Wells County girls basketball team showed some solid improvements during the final week of the season, as they found their shooting groove in defeating Drake-Anamoose and dropping a close game to Griggs-Midkota. The Hornets also took on a highly touted E-K-M team and despite a lopsided first quarter, played right with the Rebels for the rest of the game. HWC now enters District 7 Tournament action and started play against the NR-S Rockets on Friday, February 11, in Maddock. The Hornets narrowly defeated the Rockets, 49-47, in...
Harvey-Wells County found their weekly schedule full of ranked opponents, as they faced the ninth-ranked North Star Bearcats and the number one-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians. HWC overcame a large deficit against North Star and outscored the Bearcats, 30-16, in the second half for the six-point victory. The Hornets couldn't solve the instant offense and the hounding defense of the Indians, though, as they dropped the road game and their first district game of the season. HWC 53, North...
The HWC boys’ basketball team made giant strides in this week’s action, picking up two District 7 victories and moving to 5-0 in district play and 11-2 overall. The Hornets showed signs of explosive play, but allowed New Rockford-Sheyenne and Warwick to come from double-digit points down to either tie or take the lead against them. Some positives to that were the ability to fight off the challenge and persevere for the victories. HWC 55, NR-S 49 Tuesday, January 25, saw the Hornets travel to...
The HWC Hornet girls picked up a big victory over the Warwick Warriors this past week, earning their first district win of the season. HWC 63, Warwick 18 A great start by the Hornets sealed the game early on, as HWC cruised to a 45-point victory over the Warriors in Warwick on Tuesday, January 25. HWC...
The Harvey-Wells County girls’ basketball team saw the top of the spectrum this past week as they played host to the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians. The Lady Indians played very aggressive defense, as they secured the 76-26 win. On the other end of the spectrum, the Hornets saw action against the youthful TGU Titans. The Hornets claimed the 12-point victory, but the Titans played hard despite just one junior on the roster, and had 24 points scored by players who were ninth grade or younger. FW-M 76, HWC 26 Ezura Rainbow and Alionna L...
The Harvey-Wells County boys basketball team showed some signs of what they want to be this week, picking up big District 7 wins over Dakota Prairie and Benson County. Tate Grossman, Gabe Allmaras and Isaac Friese found double digits in scoring in both of the games as the Hornets remained undefeated in District 7 action. The Hornets have been improving from the free- throw line, and are seeing the floor very well, giving many players some great opportunities to score. The HWC defense has also stepped up as of late, allowing just a total of 80...
A 19-0 run by Harvey-Wells County in the third and fourth quarters propelled the Hornets to their first District 7 win of the season, as they defeated the Lakota Raiders, 55-42, Monday, January 17, in Lakota. Both the Hornets and Raiders played a close first quarter with HWC’s largest lead at 9-5, but that lead was only one at the end of eight minutes. The second quarter saw Lakota take an 18-15 lead, but HWC finished the half up on a 9-2 run courtesy of a three-pointer by Madden Thorson and deuces from Isaac Friese, Gabe Allmaras and Alex E...
Harvey-Wells County held off a furious New Rockford-Sheyenne comeback attempt to claim their first District 7 win off the season. Earlier in the week, the Hornet girls played a solid first quarter, but Nelson County took control after that point to claim the victory. The Hornet girls have had games against Towner-Granville-Upham and Warwick postponed because of weather so far this year. The TGU game was made up on Saturday January 22, in Towner. Nelson Co. 49, HWC 30 Nelson County forced HWC int...
The HWC Hornet boys’ basketball team’s record now sits at 5-2 overall, but it very well could have been 6-1 if not for a heartbreaking one-point loss in their first game of the week’s slate. The Hornets dropped a narrow decision to the Rugby Panthers, 51-50, but came back for a 39-32 win against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood last Monday. Both games were non-region games. Rugby 51, HWC 50 The Hornets jumped out early but in the end it was the Panthers holding on for the single point victory over HWC in Harvey on Friday, January 7. Harvey-Wells County...
