The Carrington City Library is not only a place where people go to get books, it's also a space where they can "learn" to read. There are a variety of new things to experience at your local library, thanks to the planning, fundraising and hard work done by Librarian Michele Seil and the library board. Last fall was a busy one, as they were working on five grants at the same time. Among those was a program offered by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction called ND Community Libraries...

"Is North Dakota better off today than it was a year ago?” That’s the question asked by Craig Blumenshine, host of the PBS “Main Street” radio program, to a panel of journalists last week. “We have no way to go but up,” I replied. The year 2023 was not one of my best, not even close. There were definitely some high points, and I’m grateful for that. Yet, I felt more anxious than I have in years. I’m not alone in that either, as uncertainty about what lay ahead has been all around me latel...
There have been some new developments regarding Canadian Football League expansion, developments that could spawn teams in North Dakota and South Dakota. I’ve written about this topic in the past, but this time there seems to be a bit more urgency. For the past seven years, the CFL has been looking to expand to Halifax, Nova Scotia. However, shortly after the season ended in late November, the deal fell through and Atlantic Canada won’t be getting a professional football team. That said, the...
I forgot what it was like to experience a good old common cold. Prior to covid, you see, the cold-getting experience went like this: I’d wake with a stuffy nose and scratchy throat and my only thought was to curse the gods for visiting a new virus cocktail on me that was going to make me cranky for nine days. I remember at first denying that a cold virus was feasting on me, then, as the hacking got bad, I moved on to the anger stage before finally accepting my fate that the miserable common cold...

On January 18 in 2002, at about 1:45 a.m., a catastrophic train derailment occurred on the western edge of Minot, with tragic and long-term consequences for nearby residents and liabilities for the Canadian Pacific Railway and insurance companies. There is hardly a quieter quiet than an early January morning in North Dakota, with sub-zero temperatures, and snow falling on snow. Nor cleaner, fresher air. Freight trains and aircraft in Minot routinely interrupt such conditions, but on this...

Every year as the snow falls, I pause and reflect on garden successes, failures and goals for next year. Last December, I had some gardening practices that I needed to change. So, how did I do on my planned improvements? I had a few successes. I did keep better control of my volunteer dill and cosmos. I saved seed and seeded rows where I knew they wouldn’t shade out my other plants. I still have work to do, but it was much improved from last year. I saved seed again this year and will keep w...
