    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Grand Forks' Red River High School hosted the East Region Girls' Wrestling Tournament, and Carrington did quite well against athletes from both Class A and B divisions. The Cards took home fifth place Friday, February 10, with a total of 127 points, and had a total of 10 qualifiers by virtue of wrestlers finishing in the top eight of their weight classes. Central Cass, the region dual champs, repeated their win in the individual event with 224 points, followed by the Fargo Stingers with 194 in...

  • Region streak finishes at 21 for Cards; defeat G-M Titans

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

The final year of Class B basketball as North Dakotans presently know it, also sees the last year of an impressive run of sustained excellence. Carrington earned their latest trip to the Region 3 Tournament starting today (February 20) at the Jamestown Civic Center with a 49-23 win over Griggs/Midkota Monday evening, February 13. It marked the 21st consecutive year that the Cards have qualified for regional play under longtime Head Coach Andy Braaten, a streak that now ends with the program's...

  • Loboes upset CHS in double overtime in semifinals

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Not to be harsh, but one could have built a sturdy mortar-bonded structure with the offerings Carrington was tossing up at the foul line and from the field in their District 5 semifinal against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. The Cards hit barely over 25 percent of their free throws at 5-for-19, and empty-handed possessions in regulation and in the two overtime periods led to a 48-44 loss to the Loboes Saturday night, February 11, at the Jamestown Civic Center. "Our shooting struggles, especially...

  • G-M falls to Rebels; advances to qualifier

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Sixth-seeded Griggs/Midkota had some tough sledding in their first round loss to Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier at the District 5 Tournament in Jamestown, taking a 57-22 loss. However, the Titans extended their season with a convincing 54-12 loser-out victory over Barnes County North on Saturday, February 11, to earn the right to play Carrington (see related article) for a Region 3 berth. In opening round action, Vanessa Vollmer was the leading scorer for the Titans with six points, and Kaylee Johnson...

  • Thunder qualify for Region 3 tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

M-P-B's journey through the District 6 Tournament in Napoleon didn't make the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 like Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter's overtime semifinal winner over Linton-HMB did. But the Thunder did enough without too much flair to earn qualification to the Region 3 Tournament, which starts today (February 20) in Jamestown. The Thunder will be the District 6 fourth seed following wins of 34-25 over South Border in first round play, and 51-34 at the expense of Strasburg-Zeeland in the region...

  • CHS boys earn #2 seed, beat E-K-M

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Save for one game, the Carrington Cardinals took care of business in the District 5 season. A 47-39 win over Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier in the East Gym on February 9 wasn't the most crisp performance by his team, but Coach Tim Ranum acknowledged the heightened urgency the late season games bring to the table. More importantly, it secured the number two seed in the District 5 tourney for the Cards, who improved to 11-7 and 5-1 with the victory over the Rebels. "It had kind of a postseason feel in th...

  • Hornet boys weather inspired NR-S effort, take 13-point win

    Lane Moellenkamp|Feb 20, 2023

A 10-0 run late in the third quarter propelled the HWC Hornets to a 64-51 win over the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets in New Rockford on Friday, February 10. The Rockets and Hornets played an even first quarter, with NR-S taking a quick 4-0 lead, but saw it evaporate quickly. Gabe Allmaras scored eight points in the first quarter for HWC, but a three from Easton Benz tied the score at 13 all, and the Hornets led by two points after eight minutes. The Hornets, behind a 9-2 run to start the second...

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 20, 2023

Wick had 22 points and Moser 21 more for the Thunder, now 12-5 pending their final regular season games last Thursday with E-K-M and Saturday against North Border.
