    Steve Andrist, Co-Chair, North Dakota News Cooperative|Dec 16, 2024

In just a few weeks, from a beautiful venue in central Bismarck, there will be seemingly endless angst and rancor, triviality and consequence, enterprise and enthusiasm. For the 69th time, the North Dakota Legislature will convene in regular session. There, our duly elected representatives will spend somewhere up to 80 days conducting business they see as good, important and necessary. Most of us won't care much about most of what they do. Some will care a little about a lot of it, a few will...

It had been more than a year since we took the route that took us through Dickinson and south on N.D. Highway 22 to Reeder and beyond. But Hardees wasn’t the suprise that day in Dickinson, it was a bank across the street. Bank of the West had been operating in that location for some time. Little did we know that Bank of the...

  • Guest: Just a woman embracing her age

    Christine Flowers|Dec 16, 2024

I turned 63 on Dec. 4. Unlike many women of my vintage, birthdays are a very public celebration in my house. It’s always been that way. For youngsters with their hopes of presents and sugary delights, that’s a normal thing. But as we get older, we’re supposed to hate, or...

    Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Dec 16, 2024

I have never been kissed under a sprig of mistletoe. However, mistletoe is prominently featured in Christmas songs such as Frank Sinatra's "Mistletoe and Holly," "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," and more recently Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe." The magical world of Harry Potter isn't safe from mistletoe as the main character and Cho Chang learned. Is there an interesting origin story for this kiss-inducing plant or is this just a Hallmark Channel plot device? Biologically, mistletoe is a less...

  • Prairie Fare: Why have we heard so much about food recalls?

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Dec 16, 2024

Let's start with a quick quiz. Name a food that has been recalled in recent months. Here's your bonus question: what was the potential issue with the food? You probably thought of more than one food that has been recalled due to a potential or actual safety threat to the public. Recalls are specific to certain brand names, not every product.
