  • Around the State: March 4, 2024

    Leasa A. Lura|Mar 4, 2024

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Splash Pad coming to life The Garrison Park Board held its monthly meeting on February 7 and a lot is going on. A photo was shared from Ackerman Estvold of a mockup of what the new splash pad will look like, which had been eagerly anticipated for quite a while. There has been talk around town for at least...

  • Dance like nobody's watchin'

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 4, 2024

I photographed the Forever Dance Spring Show at Carrington School last Sunday. It wasn't the first spring show I've attended (or photographed), but for some reason this performance had me enthralled. It was an absolute joy to see dozens of young girls leave it all on the floor. The energy level was off the charts, and the costumes and props were spectacular. Even coaches Brianne Partlow and Jane Sauby got in on the jazz, wearing outfits adorned with sequins and sparkles. I thought the action...

  • Upside Down Under: Rural North Dakota at its best...

    Marvin Baker|Mar 4, 2024

This winter in North Dakota has been remarkable for a lot of reasons and because of it, I took advantage and did some traveling across the state. The farmers’ market manager in Wahpeton contacted me about the lack of vendors at her market. It seemed like a desperate situation and because of Wahpeton’s size, I decided to take a trip and meet with her about those issues. But, this isn’t about that meeting. Unlike most others who would go across the state on an interstate or U.S. highway, I travele...

  • Guest: Seismic shift happening in N.D. politics

    Lloyd Omdahl|Mar 4, 2024

A seismic shift is taking place in the North Dakota party convention nominating system with the fragmentation of power and resources and candidates bypassing the structured nominating system and going directly to the polls. While North Dakota history is full of erratic appeals to primary elections, the present fracture was led by Senator Kevin Cramer and Governor Doug Burgum, both of whom took their cases to the public after rejection by conventions. The precedent has been established. By...

  • Dakota Gardener: A walk in the woods

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Mar 4, 2024

I took a walk in the woods last week with a colleague of mine, along with some graduate students. We were at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. Have you ever been there? It’s a fascinating place. Of course, to me, any forest is fascinating. What is a forest, anyway? It’s a simple question, but the answer isn’t quite so easy. This is actually how I start out my introductory forestry class each time that it’s taught. What’s a forest? Is it just a bunch of trees? If yes, how many?...

  • Prairie Fare: Nuts are a healthy addition to your food

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Mar 4, 2024

I added a mixture of walnuts and dried fruit to a mixed green salad I was making in my home. I smiled as I thought about my changing eating habits. As a kid, I would have eaten the salad greens and dried fruit, but nuts were off limits on my personal menu. I was not allergic to nuts. I just did not like their taste. I did not appreciate their texture, either. My mother added nuts to nearly every baked good, from brownies to cookies to quick breads. She probably knew they were good for us. Guess...

Dear Savvy Senior, Do you have any suggestions on divvying up my personal possessions to my kids after I’m gone without causing hard feelings or conflict? I have a lot of jewelry, art, family heirlooms and antique furniture, and four grown kids that don’t always see eye-to-eye on things. Conflicted Parent Dear Conflicted, Divvying up personal possessions among adult children or other loved ones can often be a tricky task. • Outside looking in

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 4, 2024

One year ago, the Valley City Hi-Liners were languishing in the second division of the former Class A's Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC), finishing as the ninth seed with a 6-16 record and losing in the play-in round. What a difference a new classification, and a talented freshman in the mix, makes. The Hi-Liners maximized their size advantage and physicality inside and on the wings to quash Carrington's bid for a state tournament with a 62-56 win Saturday, February 24, in the newly-created...

  • Cards defeat Lady Indians, take 3rd place

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 4, 2024

By virtue of a second-quarter surge, the Carrington girls ensured themselves of one shot to snag a state Division A Tournament spot Thursday night, February 22. Like the previous two matchups with Four Winds-Minnewaukan, their Region 2 third place game transpired with no team gaining a clear advantage, at least until the second eight minutes rolled around. Two three-pointers by Isabel Wendel and one more from Madison Johnson provided CHS with the breathing room sorely needed, and they largely...

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 4, 2024

G-M took a 62-53 win over the Hatton/Northwood Thunder as part of first round play, with senior Latrell Rainey's 19 points sparking the Titan offense. Kyle Johnson (13 points) and Isaac Stadler (11) contributed good supporting efforts, and Will...
