High school is about exploring opportunities to grow and learn. For Arica Trottier, the Human Resource Coordinator at Dakota Growers Pasta Company in Carrington, it's an important time to engage with students as they explore. On Tuesday, March 7, Dakota Growers hosted about a dozen students from Carrington High School, and gave them a firsthand look at a future in the pasta and food processing industry. "They are going to be learning about every position that we have available," Trottier said...
Back in the early 1980s, Al Trader and his wife, Sandy, didn't quite have a defined idea where life would take them. After Al worked for an eastern North Dakota dealership for a time, the couple's original plans were to move to Bismarck and take jobs there, and that stance was one on which the two would not easily compromise. So when Trader was offered the sales position at Rosenau Equipment in 1981, he accepted, albeit reluctantly. "The company I was going to work for [in Bismarck] did not end...
“Junk is a tricky thing,” said Foster County State’s Attorney Kara Brinster at the Foster County Commission meeting last week when Tax Equalization Director Karen Evans brought up the subject. Evans told the board that the Foster County Planning and Zoning Commission discussed creating a junk ordinance for the county. Brinster said creating a junk ordinance would be difficult. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” said Commissioner Becky Hagel. This idea stemmed from the multitude of...

I enjoyed looking through my favorite seed catalogue last month, making a list of vegetable varieties that sounded promising. After comparing my list to NDSU’s publication “Vegetable Cultivars for North Dakota 2023,” I made my final selections and then placed my online order. The shipment of seeds arrived five days later. Wouldn’t you know, it was the coldest day of the month. It was eight degrees below zero when I arrived home after work, and the box of seeds had been sitting outside all aft...

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Devastation Doug Heil, employee of Patzer Truck Repair and a Harvey fireman, arrived at the scene of the early morning fire in time to save a number of trucks and tractors before the roof of the business’s main building crashed to the ground. This isn’t good, Heil was telling himself. At daybreak he knew i...

I got my annual Girl Scout cookie fix last Friday. One of my favorite two Girl Scouts, my niece Megan, showed up just before supper time to make her pitch. I was happy to take a full case (and a couple extra boxes) off her hands in support of a good cause. Now, a few days later, as I munched on a Tagalong while trying to come up with a topic for this column, I got an idea. Personality tests are popular these days, particularly in work settings. Companies want to know what motivates a potential...

I dread the coming of Sunday, March 12. At 2 a.m. that morning our clocks will “spring forward.” That means that my yellow Labrador, Thurber, who wakes me at exactly 6 a.m. every morning, will begin waking me at exactly 5 a.m. every morning. He’ll do so because that’s when his Labradorian clock tells him it is time for me to feed him and take him outside for Number 1 and Number 2. Which means I’ll be in a perpetual stupor for weeks until the two of us finally get used to the clock change ...

Military metaphors are often overused in our sporting-obsessed culture, but M-P-B Coach Bob Young got straight to the point about what Thunder games with the Linton-HMB Lions have resembled this season. "It's always a war with Linton," he said. "Our message to the boys was that it was going to be a war, and that we'd prepared for this over the last few years." Two games in the books this season with a combined point differential of plus-three for M-P-B, tied at one apiece, meant the rubber...

For the first few minutes of the Region 3 quarterfinal round, the Carrington Cardinals were doing what they needed to do against District 6 winner Medina/Pingree-Buchanan, according to Coach Tim Ranum. The Cards got out to a quick 4-0 lead, and briefly landed a punch on a slightly-discombobulated team before matching them basket for basket early in the opening eight minutes. Then, the bottom fell out. M-P-B senior Josh Moser got hot from the field, and Carrington couldn't buy a key bucket from t...
