  • Cards falter late, upset bid foiled

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

They may not have been your father's dominant Linton-HMB Lions of old, but when the postseason comes around, the switch instantly flickers to life for the traditional south-central state power. Like the soon-to-depart "Coach K" at Duke, longtime Coach Dan Carr has built a 40-plus year cachet of excellence with three state championships, and 12 regional crowns. This year's young Lion team took Carrington's best shot for the better part of three quarters, and made the plays, defensive stops and...

  • Participation needed in North Dakota Game & Fish hunter harvest surveys

    Mar 14, 2022

Even though North Dakota’s 2021 hunting seasons have been put to bed, hunter success, or lack thereof, still matters. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has conducted hunter harvest surveys for more than a half-century, using the findings to help manage the state’s wildlife populations. Thousands of surveys are sent annually, and participation is strongly urged because hunter harvest plays a noted role, for example, in setting hunting license numbers for the upcoming season. “We survey hunters about their hunting activity because under...

  • With heavy hearts, G-M falls to Mustangs, 51-50

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

The Griggs/Midkota Titans drew upon the fighting spirits and memory of two people in the hearts and minds of the co-op's greater community, the late Mandy Hoyt and Jacob Johnson (see related article,) but that emotion wasn't nearly enough to carry them to a Region 3 victory last Monday night in Jamestown. The South Border Mustangs continued their season by the skin of their teeth, edging the Titans by the slimmest of cruel margins, 51-50, to end the G-M season with a final record of 8-15. Game...

  • Wagner's 41 sends M-P-B home

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 14, 2022

Some basketball players are merely content to take what the opposing defense gives them. Scott Wagner took whatever he wanted. The 6'7" Ellendale center, returning All-Stater and District 5 Senior Athlete of the Year was unstoppable down low, missing only two of his 21 shot attempts and rolling to a 41-point night to eliminate the M-P-B Thunder, 75-52, in the quarterfinal round of the Region 3 Boys' Basketball Tournament in Jamestown Monday, March 7. In fact, Wagner's 19 field goals were three...

  • 4th quarter surge allows HWC to survive, advance

    Lane Moellenkamp|Mar 14, 2022

Whether it was the tough defense played by both teams or some untimely turnovers by each, the HWC Hornets escaped the grip, scoring 18 in the final quarter to defeat St. John, 45-37, in one of four opening round games at the Region 4 Boys Basketball Tournament held at the Devils Lake Sports Center on Monday, March 7. In a game that featured eight lead changes and four ties, the first quarter was just that. A three from Zavier Parisien early put the Woodchucks up three. Trailing 9-8, Alex...

Bismarck State College sophomore Seth Nelson was selected to the Second Team Mon-Dak All-Conference Men's Basketball Team following a 14-16 season for the Mystics. Seth, the son of Mo and Jacqui Nelson of Carrington, was BSC's leading scorer and rebounder this past year with 13.3 points per contest and an even seven-rebound average in 2021-22. The 6'5" forward started all 30 games for the Mystics, averaging 26.6 minutes on the floor, and had shooting percentages of 45.0 from two-point range,...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Hunter surveys crucial to G&F

    Doug Leier|Mar 14, 2022

Anyone who has hunted in North Dakota might have received a hunter harvest survey in the mail from time to time. And right now is one of those times to watch for a survey in your e-mail inbox. For most surveys, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department selects recipients at random, so the more people who fill out and return the surveys, the better the information. "We survey hunters about their hunting activity because understanding how many animals were removed from the population is a really...
