About half of all foster parents in the nation quit after a year, and only about a quarter make it past a second. “I would say that’s a huge problem,” said Annika Hapip, who felt her church needed to act. “You have a lot of kiddos who are in the foster care system, and they’re waiting to be placed in a home, and foster families are stretched.” Hapip’s solution, the Lily Initiative, working within Evangel Assembly of God in Bismarck, aims to address burnout by supporting foster families and encouraging others to become foster parents. “My daffodils are coming up!” one of the people said. We were talking about what we like about springtime on a recent video call. We were from cities throughout the U.S. “I have a bunch of crocuses blooming,” another person commented. “We had 13 inches of snow, with more on the way,” I said. That certainly put a dark cloud over the conversation. Yes, I wanted some pity after numerous blizzards. Some of my colleagues were reporting temperatures in the 60s. “But I am looking forward to flowers at...
North Dakota anglers, trappers and hunters are reminded that new licenses are required beginning April 1. Licenses can be purchased online by visiting the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd.gov. Once the license is processed, hunters and anglers will have the option to print a hard copy and/or download the license to a smart phone or mobile device, which is helpful when asked to show proof while hunting or fishing in rural areas that lack cellular service. Licenses can also be purchased at more than 140 vendor locations...
I saw my first Canada goose of the year on a sunny Tuesday afternoon on February 7 about 4:30 p.m. Yes, I know the exact date and time as I texted a friend who spends more time outdoors than I do talking and writing about it. He confirmed that he spotted a few earlier in the day. While we understood we had more cold and snow to get through before spring arrived, we also knew the spring conservation season for light geese (no Canada geese are allowed) official opening day was near. Before the...
The Northern Pacific Railroad townsite of Wyndmere was established in 1883. It was named for Windermere Lake, Westmorelandshire, England, whose name is derived from "wynd," meaning a narrow lane, and "mere," meaning pool or lake . . . Wyndmere! The post office was established January 7, 1884, and the Soo Line Railroad crossed the Northern Pacific tracks there in 1888, at which time a new place dubbed East Wyndmere popped up. Well, a couple of years later, most of the Wyndmere buildings had been...
