    Erik Gjovik|Oct 28, 2024

A self-described farm girl from Wisconsin, Wiederholt made her way to Carrington in 2006 to oversee a newly-created program at the NDSU Carrington Research Ext...

  • The art of bringing people in

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 28, 2024

At the Foster County Independent, we are 90 days into this national experiment to revive local news. As I look at what we’ve accomplished so far and the work ahead, I am encouraged. This month also marks a milestone for me in business. As of October 1, I have been the publisher of this newspaper for three whole years, and I am approaching the 10-year mark of my career in the newspaper industry (which will happen in February). A lot has changed since. I’m starting to see how we can both con...

  • Upside Down Under: A euphoric feeling...

    Marvin Baker|Oct 28, 2024

It isn’t often that journalists write about themselves, but in this case, it seems timely and necessary to describe something I’ve dealt with the past 6 1/2 years. On Friday morning the urology staff at Mayo Clinic declared me cancer free, and I’ve been switched to an annual checkup after three-month, then four-month and finally six-month visits. After getting that news, I wasn’t sure my mind or body could be that relaxed. I didn’t want to go dancing in the streets, but the relief was incredible...

  • Guest: Are you spending enough for Halloween?

    Danny Tyree|Oct 28, 2024

According to the National Retail Federation (motto: “Proudly middlemansplaining since 1911”), Americans set a Halloween spending record of $12.2 billion in 2023. (And that didn’t even include earplugs for muffling the seasonal onslaught of “spooktacular,” “boo-tiful,” “to die for” and other undead “dad jokes” shambling in from Father’s Day.) But, citing research from Lending Tree, “Newsweek” magazine says 59 percent of Halloween spenders plan to scale back purchases this year because of tighte...

  • Dakota Gardener: How did your garden grow?

Emily How, NDSU Extension Agent, Ward County|Oct 28, 2024

How did your garden season go? This summer I participated in three different NDSU Home Garden Variety Trials, and planted nine tomato plants, potatoes, beans, melons, cucumber, different squashes and much more. As I start to pull out plants and clean up my garden area, I cannot help but compare this season to the previous and how it helped prepare me for this year. Now it may seem early for planning next year's garden, but while the garden season is fresh in my memory, I jotted down some notes...

  • Braves outpace Cards in finale

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 28, 2024

Two of the four Class A – Region 2 seeds were spoken for with one result in the books the previous evening, so the Carrington football team's main goal in their Oct. 18 regular season finale at Bottineau was to give themselves a more favorable first-round postseason matchup. The Braves were in the same boat as the Cards, and the efforts of the home team ended up winning out in the end. In a shootout, Bottineau held on for a 35-28 victory over CHS at Les Christian Field, and consigned the C...

The Hornet defense made sure that the game was never in doubt, as the Aggies' first three plays resulted in two fumbles and two HWC recoveries. While monster offensive nights are not necessarily rare in high school volleyball, what Maddie Gefroh and Brynn Sorenson did as a tandem defied description. The two combined for a mind-boggling 60 kills, Gefroh with 32 and Sorenson 28. That led to a very-high assist total for Violet Bohl, who recorded 49 in the win. Lane Moellenkamp|Oct 28, 2024

HWC 3, Rugby 0 In a bit of a surprise, HWC made short work of their match with the Panthers on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in Rugby.
