  • Field and Garden: After a windy week, it's time for yardwork

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster Co.|Apr 4, 2022

My wife and I looked out the window during supper last month and watched as yet another strong gust shook our neighbor’s trees. “It was never this windy when I was growing up,” Melissa said. It wasn’t the first time she had made that comment. The remark prompted me to check weather data recorded at the NDSU Carrington REC. The results showed that Melissa was right. This past winter has been exceptionally windy in Foster County. Since Nov. 1, we’ve had 19 days with wind gusts exceeding 40 miles...

    Apr 4, 2022

Public water systems are required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to take many actions to provide safe drinking water. The SDWA was passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s public drinking (potable) water supplies. Over the years, there have been a number of changes to the Safe Drinking Water Act. These changes have made it more challenging to maintain compliance. The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality issues a Safe Drinking Water Act Certificate of Achievement as one way to recognize t...

Dakota Datebook written by Christina Sunwall. On April 8, 1935, the United States Congress passed the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act. The act provided President Franklin Roosevelt with funding for several new government employment programs including the Works Progress Administration; a program that offered work building bridges, roads, public parks and airports. • Vietnam stories about my good friends

    Allen Stock|Apr 4, 2022

Fellow Fourth Estater Neil O. Nelson, who pens good and interesting stories at the Herald-Press newspaper for the Harvey/Fessenden area caught my attention last week. His personal column dealt with his serving in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, where he went and returned without any fanfare. His father greeted him when he returned home from serving with the words, “Home, huh?” while mom went into hysteria for a good 10 minutes, “because I hadn’t been home in something like ten years.” At the local...

North Dakota is No.2 in the following crops: Len...

  • Perspective: Saga of Dem-NPL Light Brigade

    Lloyd Omdahl|Apr 4, 2022

In 1854, when the United Kingdom was engaged in the Crimean War, Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote the “Charge of the Light Brigade” to describe the slaughter in the Battle of Baraclava against the Russians. It is somewhat descriptive of the recent Democratic-NPL state convention in Minot where a maximum of 200 people attended in person and online and failed to nominate candidates for all of the offices on the November ballot. This is not a once-in-a-lifetime historic event. If you live long eno...
