Shannon Brandt, the man accused of running down and killing a teenager last year, now faces a less severe charge. On Saturday, April 27, Foster County State's Attorney Kara Brinster filed a motion to reduce the Class AA felony murder charge against Brandt to a Class B felony charge of manslaughter. Following that motion, Brandt's defense attorney, Mark Friese, unsurprisingly filed a short brief saying they don't oppose the reduction, and on May 1, District Court Judge Bradley Cruff made it...
In 12 years as an English teacher and coach in the Carrington School District, Tim Ranum has seen a half-generation of kids come through his classroom, and has graced the sidelines and dugout with his infectious enthusiasm. During the meeting held on Tuesday, May 2, the board learned that grants for snow removal from October 1 to December 31 could add up to $15 million for state agencies and an additional $5 million for October 1, 2022,...
After nearly a full school year of effort, the new weight room at Carrington Public School (CPS) is open for use. The idea for the new weight room took shape this past summer, almost as soon as Superintendent Janelle Helm and High School Principal Connor Weber first came to work at CPS. Parents, coaches and students approached them about the need, and The C-Club and Boosters donated funds for two new squat racks and benches, a cost of $10,300. Upon recommendation from Helm, the school board...

My trip to Salt Lake City was one I won’t forget. Breathtaking scenery, great food, and family time were among my favorite parts of the five-day excursion west. Leaving work behind was definitely the hardest. I knew it would be a challenge, and so I made lists and meticulously tied up loose ends before we hit the road. I left the keys in my vehicle in the garage, just in case the newspapers didn’t make it to Carrington on Friday and needed to be picked up in Jamestown or Fargo (as has been the...

Evidence begins to surface that a young farmhand of the missing family is responsible. And while the sheriff and the state’s attorney begin an investigation, a vigilante group decides to take justice into its own hands. The movie is set in 1931 in Schafer, the McKenzie County seat before Watford C...
It’s an excuse I’ve been dreaming of: A reason to NOT mow my lawn. A “No Mow May” movement is afoot to nurture our bee population for a good reason: bees are incredibly important to our own survival.a According to Bee City USA, an initiative of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, bees are highly important pollinators whose busy work enables the creation of one third of the food and drink we consume. Here’s how bees work: They are drawn to plants for their sweet nectar, which the...

The winter of 2022-23 just keeps on giving! With the snow mostly melted, our Dakota Gardener readers may notice their lawns are a mess but for vastly different reasons. Across the region, we have three different situations that have resulted in lawn damage: persistent snow cover, the 2022 drought and spring flooding. Gray Snow Mold For those that endured deep snowdrifts for what seemed like an eternity, you may see matted down, straw-colored patches of grass. A cotton-like webbing may have...

Men generally aren't commended for trying to sneak a peek up a woman's skirt, but one North Dakotan helped in a historic capture by doing so. That North Dakotan's name was Arne Ranum, a young Norwegian man and Civil War soldier. Ranum's parents came to the United States in 1864, first settling in Wisconsin before moving to the Mekinock area in the Dakota Territory in 1879. While in Wisconsin, 18-year-old Arne Ranum joined the Wisconsin Cavalry for the Union Army. Ranum took part in many famous...
