  • New champion trees crowned in N.D. in 2022

    May 8, 2023

Bismarck – Citizens of North Dakota were enthusiastic last year in searching for the biggest trees of each species in the state. State Forester Thomas Claeys is pleased to announce that nine new champion trees and one new second place champion have been added to the North Dakota Register of Champion Trees. The Register is the official list of the first and second largest trees of each tree species in the state. The cottonwood (Populus deltoides), owned by Paul Dede on a farmstead in Cass C...

  • Prairie Fare: May is Melanoma Awareness Month

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|May 8, 2023

Are you cold?" someone asked me as I walked into a conference room. "I'm OK," I replied. Yes, wearing a coat into the hotel conference room was a bit odd. In my defense, I was pulling a suitcase, holding a purse and carrying a large bag. I think he was just giving me a bad time. Being from the north, I often receive some references to temperature. I removed my light winter coat and settled into my seat. I was wearing a sweater because a person has to be prepared for cold conference rooms. Grante...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Understanding the lottery for N.D.

    Doug Leier, N.D. Game and Fish Biologist|May 8, 2023

Where are the fishing biting? How are the deer numbers? Two of the most often asked questions I get. Along those same lines, the most popular licensing inquiry deals with the lottery and bonus points. Let’s establish from the start these are “bonus” points not any kind of “preference” point as some may think. The words and functionality are not the same. A preference would give more weight to each point. In the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s lottery system, no point is more important t...

  • Dakota Datebook: Prison riots in Bismarck

    May 8, 2023

On May 8 in 1957, newspapers across the country were reporting a prison riot at the State Penitentiary in Bismarck the previous day. The trouble started late in the morning, when 220 prisoners refused to go back to work in the binder-twine factory. The convicts complained of poor food, about the actions of a particularly hated guard, and inadequate time for recreation. The inmates went back to their cellblock but refused to enter their cells. The situation escalated about two hours later, when...

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

Carrington's track teams made their way into the fresh spring air for their first two outdoor meets of the season, the Mariya Tate Bernhardt Memorial Meet in Rugby Saturday, April 29, and the Nedrose Varsity Meet in eastern Minot the following Monday. Both Cardinal squads earned first place as a team at Nedrose, with the girls almost eclipsing the 200-point mark and the boys scoring 97. At the Mariya Tate, CHS won the girls' meet with 92.5 points over host Rugby, and the CHS men took second to t...

    Lane Moellenkamp|May 8, 2023

The Bismarck meet was an excellent opportunity, for those that chose to participate, to get valuable track and field experience at the Bismarck Community Bowl, which will host the state event at the end of...

  • Cards split with L-L-M, South Border in low-scoring games

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

Thanks to a dominating mound stint by LaMoure/Litchville-Marion's Anthony Hanson, CHS' unblemished record on the diamond is no more. The Loboes' ace struck out 11 and allowed just two hits to the Cards, and L-L-M took just enough advantage of limited scoring chances to shut out the locals, 3-0, at Townsend Field in LaMoure Monday, May 1. Cardinal starter Josh Bickett pitched a good game in spite of six walks, and gave up only three hits himself. Unfortunately for Bickett, all three LaMoure runs...

  • CHS batsmen take brooms to KC, So. Border in Steele

    Erik Gjovik|May 8, 2023

Carrington came back to the pack slightly with the return to Region 3 play, but in the end, it meant retaining their unbeaten string to begin the season to that point. Grady Shipman matched Kidder County ace Blake Braun strikeout for strikeout (13 each), and a big second inning rally was enough to carry the Cards to a nailbiting 5-4 win over the Wolves Friday, April 28, in a matchup of league contenders. In the nightcap, it was the Cards' three runs in the sixth inning that broke a 4-4 deadlock...
