Commissioner Alan Scanson said that the commission was unaware of the contract and that Monson...

  • See you on the lake!

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 10, 2024

Picture this: You're sitting in a boat or swimming on the shores of Juanita Lake, enjoying the pleasant breezes and waves while catching some sun or a few keepers. Then, a sudden pang of hunger or thirst hits you. Or the bugs start biting. Or you just remembered you want to get the grill going. If those essentials weren't available, often times that meant a long jaunt back to Carrington, or New Rockford, or wherever the nearest store happened to be. And that means lost recreation time, fun, and...

  • Around the State: June 10, 2024

    Leasa A. Lura|Jun 10, 2024

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Watford City alum heading to NASA Sadie Bone has always been curious. That curiosity, combined with her drive for knowledge and discovering answers, has led her to an internship at NASA. Sadie and her parents spent her early years in Butte, Mont. before moving to Watford City in 2012. The Watford City...

  • Your vote is your voice

    Amy Wobbema|Jun 10, 2024

This primary season has been quite the experience. On one hand, it’s positive to see so many North Dakotans interested in running for political office. We’re seeing primary challenges in both state and local government races, which means voters have choices in who they want to represent them over the next few years. On the other hand, more candidates means more political advertising. Citizens have started write-in campaigns, and announced their candidacy in newspapers, radio, TV and all ove...

  • Upside Down Under: Worried on the west end...

    Marvin Baker|Jun 10, 2024

Back in the 1990s when I lived in Langdon, I made frequent trips to Winnipeg, sometimes twice a week and most often took care of business, ate meals, stayed in hotels and attended football games in Winnipeg’s west end. Apparently, that part of town has changed dramatically since the ‘90s and nobody seems to know what to do about it. Crime, which was always restricted to the downtown area and almost always at night, has shifted. The crime rate in the west end has increased dramatically and des...

  • Guest: Rock on, and pass the Tylenol

    Jase Graves|Jun 10, 2024

Now that two of my daughters are away at college and the one still at home basically views me as an ATM in an unfashionable neighborhood, I’ve tried to find myself a hobby. Since I’m not interested in activities that involve getting out of bed before noon on a Saturday, that pretty much rules out most manly-type-outdoorsy stuff that would require me to sweat profusely in a tent, clean an animal carcass or have one of my friends pluck a tick from a region of my anatomy that I can’t reach. Inste...

  • Dakota Gardener: A celebration of Dakota squash

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Jun 10, 2024

Are you looking for a vegetable that is delicious and easy to grow? Think squash. Squash has been a staple of gardens in the Dakotas for centuries. Our native tribes grew and harvested squash. They sliced the young fruits, skewered them through willow sticks and dried them in the sun. Squash was vital for their survival during the cold winters. Squash was one of the crops along with maize and beans in the famous Three Sisters plantings. The squash vines served as a mulch that shaded the soil,...

  • Savvy Senior: Long-term care benefits for veterans and spouses

    Jim Miller|Jun 10, 2024

Dear Savvy Senior, I understand that the Veterans Administration has a benefit that can help veterans and spouses with long-term care costs. We recently had to move my elderly father into an assisted living memory care facility, and my mother will probably need care, too, in the near future. What can you tell me? Searching for Aid Dear Searching, The Veterans Administration (VA) does indeed have an underutilized benefit that can help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for a...

  • Rolling with the changes

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 10, 2024

A deluge of rain around nine hours before play was scheduled to begin last Tuesday washed out the entire first day of the State Class B Boys' Golf Tournament at CrossRoads Golf Club. So, the North Dakota High School Activities Association condensed the planned June 4-5 slate into one day only, Wednesday, June 5, for 18 holes of competition to determine the best of the best. However, those plans were further revised Tuesday night when an inspection of the course showed that the front nine holes...
