  • Haskap, aronia offer possibilities to gardeners

    Jeff Gale|Jul 4, 2022

My wife and I recently spent a wonderful evening enjoying pie and ice cream with a group of friends. While we were together, I had my first opportunity to taste haskap and aronia berries. I understand now why haskaps are sometimes called a “better blueberry”. Haskap berries are large and sweet. They are not only delicious straight off the vine but also good for making pie, jelly and even wine. And unlike blueberries, haskaps thrive in our North Dakota environment. The bushes I saw formed an attr...

  • Protecting the public's right to know

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 4, 2022

You may have read articles and editorials stating that newspapers a...

  • Ghosts of North Dakota past

    Marvin Baker|Jul 4, 2022

I have a North Dakota map from the 1950s and I was looking at it to see if any highways have changed. Then I got a little curious about several small towns in Cavalier County that either no longer exist or are hanging on by a thread. Alsen, Calio, Clyde, Hannah, Wales, Loma, Nekoma, Easby, Calvin and Maida are all listed on the map. The sad thing is, every one of those communities has lost nearly its entire population in the past 70 years. Many of them moved to Langdon, many moved to Devils Lake...

  • More complaining about taxes

    Lloyd Omdahl|Jul 4, 2022

Even though he doesn’t stuff the envelopes, North Dakota Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus deserves credit for the efficient manner in which his department is serving the public. His turnaround time is just a matter of days while the Internal Revenue Service takes months. (If Commissioner Kroshus ever uses this compliment in a political campaign, I will deny that I ever said it – plead temporary insanity or something else believable.) For an agency that touches thousands of people, the Tax Dep...

Kudos to the Carrington Garden Club for the outstanding work they do to make this happen! As I travel through town, I really enjoy seeing the blooming baskets on Main Street and all the large pots of flowers as well. Having flowers at the Welcome to Carrington signs and in the roundabout makes all visitors feel welcome and valued. Dennis Swanson and all the oth...

  • Dakota Datebook: The Fourth of July at Fort Rice

    Ann Erling|Jul 4, 2022

On July 4 in 1865, the United States of America celebrated its first Independence Day after four years of civil war. Although far from the battlefields of the war, Dakota Territory was also affected by the conflict, especially its isolated soldiers. After spending the duration of the Civil War in Dakota Territory’s sparsely populated plains, the officers and soldiers of Fort Rice found the reuniting of their nation a meaningful reason to celebrate the Fourth of July with new found excitement. The men of Fort Rice suspended all business for one...
