  • Top of the podium

    Erik Gjovik|Jul 8, 2024

From his younger days growing up on a farm 14 miles northwest of Pingree in the shadow of the Hawksnest foothills, Greg Hoeckle was always driven to succeed. When he first arrived in the Carrington school district as the new elementary physical education teacher in August 1990, Hoeckle's after-school gig in the spring season, track and field, became his passion. And his teams' staggering accomplishments since then have led the soft-spoken (but forceful when it has to be) coach with the ready...

  • Field and Garden: Still time for many vegetable crops

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Jul 8, 2024

A friend from Indiana called last week, and I patiently listened as he boasted about his thriving garden. “I picked my first cucumber today,” he said, “and my tomatoes look tremendous.” My experience this year has been quite the opposite. My potatoes died after heavy rain left them standing in water for several days. Other vegetables – corn, cucumbers, and zucchini – didn’t emerge at all and had to be replanted. They are growing now, but way behind in development compared to last year. I’m not...

  • Saving local news: why 94 cents isn't enough

    Teri Finneman|Jul 8, 2024

You likely paid 94 cents for this newspaper. It's not enough. Remember this number: 94 cents. It's the number I'm repeating as I work with your newspaper in the coming months as part of a national experiment to help save local news. That number, 94 cents, is how much it costs you as a subscriber to get this paper every week with your $49 in-state annual subscription. 94 cents. A Twix and a bottle of pop – both machine-produced within seconds – each cost over $2 at a gas station I recently stoppe...

    Marvin Baker|Jul 8, 2024

Lately, there have been a number of lists that have surfaced about who the most famous North Dakotan may be. There are several separate lists from Sports Illustrated to Forbes, but one thing is clear, on every list except for one outlier, the No. 1 person is the same – Josh Duhamel. • Guest: Things happen in threes

    Jase Graves|Jul 8, 2024

I’ve heard it said that things happen in threes, especially tragedies, deaths and doses of Pepto Bismol after a big Tex-Mex dinner. My own three defining experiences over the past few weeks can’t be described as tragedies, per se, so I’ll refer to them as catastrophes, instead. First was/is the great Graves dishwasher incident, or saga, or ongoing fiasco. In our home, we tend to hang on to appliances until they die of natural causes–and sometimes we invoke extreme resuscitation measure...

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Jul 8, 2024

I travel a lot throughout North Dakota. It’s part of my job. While it’s sometimes hard to be away from home so much, I do get to see a lot of the state, enjoying both its natural beauty and the variety of the many small towns. I’m always on the lookout for rare or unique tree species during my travels. Recently, I was in Hettinger, North Dakota, and saw a newly planted ‘MN Strain’ redbud tree. I was glad to see the folks in this town trying something new and different. I was also a little wo...
