“It just keeps raining and raining,” a farmer remarked during our phone conversation ten days ago. “We had an inch and a half on Saturday, and then two-tenths of an inch on Monday and again on Tuesday.” Most of our focus has been on the amount of rain (13.5 to 15.3 inches) Foster County has received this spring and summer. However, after my conversation with the farmer, I became curious about how often it has rained. Checking the records from the Carrington NDAWN station, I discovered that we...

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 29, 2024

Most of us have likely seen it at least once before. We’re in the middle of an important task, such as entering thousands of entries into an Excel spreadsheet or posting our latest update to Facebook, and all of a sudden the computer screen turns blue. About a week ago, the screens of an estimated 8.5 million Windows computers came down with the blue screen of death. It was like watching Inside Out 2, when orange-haired Anxiety takes over our beloved Riley. The multi-day tech flub, dubbed the ...

This is the third time since the modern Olympics began in Athens, Greece in 1896, that Paris will be the host city. The games were also held there in 1900 and 1924. It is also one of only three cities anywhere in the world to host the games three times. The others being Los Angeles and London. A total of 206 nations are represented at this y...

We toured several beautiful and fascinating cities in New England. Our first stop was Newburyport, Massachusetts. • Dakota Gardener: A bee lawn in progress

Carrie Knutson, NDSU Extension Agent, Grand Forks County|Jul 29, 2024

Last year, I seeded a small patch of bee lawn to see how it would work in my yard. It is an out of the way area tucked behind a shed and spruce tree that I don't like to mow. I wanted to try it out before I committed to converting more areas of the backyard into a bee lawn. A bee lawn combines flowering plants for pollinators with low maintenance turfgrass. Not just any flowering plants can be used for a bee lawn. The flowering plants have to be good sources of pollen and nectar for...

  • Prairie Fare: Which foods are safer after power outage?

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Jul 29, 2024

I saw that the freezer door was slightly ajar. The liquid came from a large box of melting ice cream bars that were irresistible to my children, especially on warm summer days. After squeezing the food packages, I closed the door and began coming up with a game plan to deal with thawed food. Let’s just say t...
