  • New traffic laws go into effect August 1

    Nathan Price|Jul 31, 2023

North Dakota motorists beware, the laws are changing. As of press time, N.D. state law dictated that a driver in North Dakota could not be ticketed for being unbuckled unless first pulled over for a separate violation – but that won’t be the case for long. Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 1, not wearing a seatbelt in the state of North Dakota will be a “primary” traffic violation, meaning a police officer can initiate a traffic stop and issue a citation if they spot a driver without their seat belt. Addi...

  • Field and Garden: Blossom end rot, white grubs and cucumber beetles

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Jul 31, 2023

There’s a 50/50 chance that we still have 60 frost-free days ahead of us. That’s enough time to plant and harvest some garden crops. Plants grow more slowly as the days grow shorter and the nights become cooler. But any vegetable that can reach maturity within 45 days of planting is likely to succeed. Lettuce, spinach, radish and turnip are good crops in fall gardens. The back of the seed packet has information about the time it takes for a variety to reach maturity. Here are some questions tha...

  • Project Tundra carbon capture plans may not be worth climate, financial risks

Michael Standaert, North Dakota News Cooperative|Jul 31, 2023

As the State of North Dakota trumpets Project Tundra, experts outside of the state raise questions about capturing carbon dioxide emissions from two units at coal-fired Milton R. Young Power Plant near Center, North Dakota. The only real certainty is that the initiative will be expensive and will result in unabated carbon emissions at least through 2028, if not longer, under the projected construction timeline. Costs of producing energy will also rise due to the technology needed to capture the...

  • Welcome to the North Dakota State Fair

    Marvin Baker|Jul 31, 2023

It seems that every year, just before the North Dakota State Fair kicks off, there are construction zones everywhere. In fact, all we have to say is “state fair’s coming to town,” and others know exactly what it means. When I first moved to this area of the state in 2000, it seemed like a coincidence that all this construction in the city of Minot was going on immediately before and during the fair. It continued year after year and actually ramped up. You can’t help but wonder why, when hundreds...

  • Guest: A/C hasn't only made life cooler

    Tom Purcell|Jul 31, 2023

As a heat wave hits America from coast to coast, it’s hot outside — but cool inside, thanks to the triumph of air conditioning. For most of human history, there was little people could do to avoid heat. During the day, it drove people outside of their homes to enjoy the shade of a tree or to take a refreshing dip in a lake or river. At night, folks in cities slept outside on their porches, roofs and even fire escapes. When I was a kid in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, few homes had air con...

  • Dakota Gardener: Pollinator gardening for children

April Johnson, Pollinator technician, NDSU Extension|Jul 31, 2023

Now that summer is here and students are out of school, adults frequently ask me how to involve youth in pollinator conservation. Though they are wildly popular, I don't usually recommend that children construct bee houses because of their limited contribution to conservation and high-maintenance demands. Much easier and effective ways exist to encourage children to explore pollinators in the garden. Teach children not to fear bees. Generally, bees only sting when provoked. Most of the time,...

  • Prairie Fare: Exploring nature while mowing can promote health

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Jul 31, 2023

"You're doing a good job," my husband commented. I needed the positive reinforcement. I was mowing the lawn with a push mower, which typically is on my husband's task list. I usually weed and tend the flowers and vegetables. Unfortunately, he has an injured shoulder. He is sidelined from physical labor for several months. Lucky me. Despite his compliment, I knew my mowing was not living up to my husband's standards of perfect diagonal cuts. I was mowing like a mouse running around a maze, going...

  • Second in the state

    Jul 31, 2023

The 10 and Under Carrington Redbirds Baseball Team played in the State Tournament in Steele on July 20-22. They finished the tournament going 4-2, with both losses coming at the hands of the eventual champions, Kidder County. In Game 1, the Redbirds fell behind 7-1 early to a pesky Devils Lake team. The Redbirds bats would be going and they would score the next 14 runs of the game to take a 15-7 lead going into the top of the 5th inning where Devils Lake would score 5 more runs. After a...
