Foster County commissioners are officially requesting nearly $100,000 from Wells County, which they argue amounts to four years' worth of social service payments owed to Foster County that haven't been distributed since 2020. A letter being drafted by Foster County State's Attorney Kara Brinster at the request of commissioners, will soon be sent to the Wells County commission requesting exactly $92,757.88. A motion to send the letter was carried unanimously at Foster County's commission meeting...
North Dakota Monitor August 2, 2024 The July 5 train derailment in central North Dakota that caused hazardous materials to spill and catch fire may have involved tank cars that regulators have long identified as flawed. A preliminary report released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board said some of the 17 tank cars that derailed were reported to include DOT-111 cars. That is the same type of car that Congress has ordered to be phased out for hauling flammable liquids by 2029, acc... Full story
Having grown up helping out on her parents' beef cattle operation just outside of Grace City, Lauren Staton is no stranger to detail to make sure everything is in working order. Now, she will put those talents to work with people's health and well-being, as she is CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Clinic and Urgent Care's newest Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Staton started seeing patients officially on August 1, but she has already built a degree of familiarity with her local...
The Central Prairie Human Service Zone (Central Prairie) has a new director. Madison Crisman, who's been the zone's interim director since February of this year, has now officially been hired for the role of director. She took the interim job after the zone's previous director, Julie St. Germaine, resigned and took a position in western North Dakota to be closer to family. Since then, Crisman has earned the zone board's endorsement and respect, and looks forward to continuing her work as...

“I think we should plant perennials next year,” remarked my wife the other day. We’ve planted and enjoyed a large patch of zinnias the last two years. I would probably plant them again, but Melissa is ready for a change. She has an English-style cottage garden in mind. Melissa likes the variety, color and wildness that cottage gardens possess. The question is: what should we plant? I recently found an NDSU Extension publication that could help us decide: “Annual and Perennial Flowers for Nor...

Those that attended are left to right: front row, Claudia Park, Jane Lura and Nurgul Gussiaas. Back row: Renee Klein, Susie Williams, Jane Rosenau, Jim Cook,...

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Dunseith Port of Entry bid at $94 million The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) awarded a Design-Build contract to McGough Construction that will replace all existing outmoded buildings at the Dunseith Land Port of Entry with more secure, efficient and high-capacity new facilities. Imagine, if you can, coming to the realization that something you held to be true for four years is, in fact, wrong. And no, this is not about my personal politics. Slow your roll there, smart alecks. It all started with a seemingly innocuous Facebook post Wednesday night, July 24, congratulating our baseball boys from Carrington Post 25 on capturing another District 4 championship and advancing to the State ‘B’ American Legion Tournament in LaMoure. At the bottom of the post, I made an “at...
It seems like it’s been a long time, but Leonard Peltier is back in the spotlight for a couple of reasons. Peltier, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, who is now 79, is serving two consecutive life sentences in a Florida prison for his role in a 1975 shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation that left two federal agents dead. First of all, he was recently denied parole from the prison that is approximately 70 miles northeast of Tampa. He has now been in prison for more than 29 y...
Bowling didn’t make the cut again. Neither will baseball and softball, ballroom dancing, pole dancing and a host of other sports be featured in the 2024 Summer Olympics games in Paris. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is picky about the sports it chooses. A sport must be widely practiced globally, draw a high level of interest among the media and public and also not pose too many cost and scheduling obstacles, such as the need to build large baseball stadiums. But in a perfect world, wo...
12 Years Ago August 11, 1949 For faithful service with the Standard Oil Co. for 20 years, Art Anderson of Carrington was presented a 20-year pin at a company party held last Friday night at the Miami Grill’s Fiesta Room. A youngster playing with matches was blamed for a fire which did about $500 damage to the Tenborg potato warehouse Friday afternoon. The child set fire on the outside of the structure, and it spread to the building. Only the driveway shed was damaged, the main building being o...

Dear Savvy Senior, I recently received an email that I needed to update my online Social Security account. Is this legit or is it a scam? Suspicious Susan Dear Susan, The Social Security Administration did indeed send out a legitimate email last month to notify recipients that they are making changes to the way you access Social Security’s online services, including your personal “my Social Security” account. The changes will simplify your sign-in experience and align with federal authe...
Even with the change in team leadership going into this season, all the pieces were there for first-year Post 25 Coach Jayden Shipman to make a splash of his own. The difficulty of following the standard that former Coach Tim Ranum set for the Carrington American Legion baseball program is a hard fact to discount. But Shipman's club, behind its three 19-year-olds, reached deep down for something extra and completed another successful return to the Class B Tournament with a 4-3 win over the...
I have tremendous respect for all our North Dakota game wardens. Their work is under-appreciated and most invaluable to all who spend time outdoors. Long days in remote locations, nights, weekends and holidays. And while you may take every opening day of deer season off, they likely work every deer opener their entire career. For most game wardens, their spouse and kids, it's a way of life and not a job. For some, being known as the "game warden" is a cross to bear and their kids in school will...
If not for two disastrous innings, the Carrington Redbirds put a scare into a pair of quality teams at the State Class 'B' Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament for the 13-to-15 year old division Friday and Saturday, July 26-27. At points in their tourney journey, the 'Birds trailed defending state champion Park River by just 6-4, and were in the conversation for an upset against the Burlington Bulldogs in loser-out play, staring at a 3-2 late game deficit. But that's where things went south fast for...

Eight teams from throughout the state of North Dakota battled for supremacy to claim the championship of the league, which comprises players in the 13-to-15 year old age group. The Kindred Vikings won four straight games to win the state championship, prevailing in the final by a score of 12-2 over the LaMoure A's. Photo galleries from six games at the tournament, representing all eight teams...
