  • Departed school on minds of Cathay grads

    Susan Wold|Aug 26, 2024

It's gone now. The site is now a leveled patch that will someday just grow grass. It used to grow minds. It's the city block that once was the home to the two-story solid brick school in Cathay, N.D. That brick building of knowledge was built to be indestructible. On January 31, 1919, the first two-story brick Cathay school burned to the ground. In March the town had a mass meeting to discuss a new building. The superintendent of schools recommended building a new modern, 10-room building. It...

  • Field and Garden: Pests increase as area crops mature

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Aug 26, 2024

The wheat harvest in Foster County got off to a slow start in early August, and progress was further delayed by a weather system on August 14 and 15, which brought over 1.6 inches of rain to much of the area. The wind and rain caused some wheat to lodge. Yield reports have been variable, ranging from 60 to 80 bushels per acre, well above our five-year average of 53 bushels per acre. Test weights have been solid, averaging nearly 60 pounds per bushel, but protein content has been lower than...

  • Measure to impact more than residential taxes

    Mary Steurer, North Dakota Monitor|Aug 26, 2024

Property tax measure would impact more than residential taxes by Mary Steurer, North Dakota Monitor August 19, 2024 A ballot measure to eliminate taxes based on assessed property value wouldn’t just overhaul North Dakota’s residential property tax system — it’d also disrupt hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue local governments make by taxing other kinds of property. The measure, approved for the November ballot earlier this month, would bar political subdivisions from “levying any tax on real or personal property except for bonde... Full story

    Leasa A. Lura|Aug 26, 2024

The $1 million budgeted by the Minot City Council for 2024 falls about $1.95 million short of what is needed to eliminate the almost continuous sounding of train horns as CPKC Rail...

  • Dakota Gardener: Battling bugs in the garden

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Aug 26, 2024

Gardens in North Dakota look great this year. The rains have been plentiful in most areas, and our plants are thriving. Be prepared to protect your garden from insect pests. Swarms of flea beetles will be arriving soon, and I see white moths laying eggs on my cabbage today. Whenever my vegetable garden gets attacked by insect pests, I don't get sad. Instead, I get mad. Then I get even. When I was a farm boy, I sprayed a product called Sevin (perhaps misspelled but very effective) to kill the...

  • Guest: Keeping things simple is hard to do

    Alexandra Paskhaver|Aug 26, 2024

Simplicity, simplicity. If I was really practicing it, I would have said it once. I've been trying to cut down on the clutter in my life, mostly because I keep stubbing my toes on it. But also because people say it helps you focus on the things that matter. Well, not stubbing my toes matters to me. So I've been donating or throwing out every unnecessary thing I own. It's out with my presidential bobbleheads, my chess set with the missing pieces, and my refrigerator. When you think about it, you...

  • Upside Down Under: Bismarck's metamorphosis...

    Marvin Baker|Aug 26, 2024

I’m sure we’ve all been in Bismarck at one time or another. But, if you don’t live near Bismarck and don’t get there very often, the next time you do, you’ll most likely notice changes. The city of Bismarck seems to defy just about all of the rest of North Dakota and continues with a robust growth that has now pushed the city to 75,000 in population. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that the state capitol is located there, but it also sits in a strategic location in North Dakota which makes it a na...

  • Guest: Government-mandated vacations

    Tom Purcell|Aug 26, 2024

Sen. Bernie Sanders has sponsored a bill to mandate paid vacations for all employees. Like so many of Bernie’s proposals, it sounds good until you get into the nitty gritty. Look, it’s true, as Bernie argues, that the United States is the only advanced economy that does not require employers to provide paid vacation time. It’s also true, reports CNN, that “not only do American workers get less vacation time than workers in other industrialized countries, but they also opt to take fewer days of...

  • Savvy Senior: Does Medicare cover cataract surgery?

    Jim Miller|Aug 26, 2024

Dear Savvy Senior, How does Medicare cover cataract surgery? My eye doctor recently told me I’ve developed cataracts and should consider making plans for surgery in the next year or so. Almost 67 Dear Almost, Like gray hair and wrinkles, cataracts are an inevitable part of the aging process. Eventually, everyone (usually in their 60s) will develop cataracts, a condition that causes cloudy or blurry vision. The only way to correct this is through cataract surgery. • CHS gridders should challenge in Region 2

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 26, 2024

A play here and a play there in three games separated the Carrington football team from the "good enough" tier to positioning themselves into Class A's upper echelon. Even with those setbacks, the Cardinals still managed to accomplish their goal of a home playoff game with a 6-3 regular season record, the second Region 2 seed and the chance to knock off visiting Oakes in round one last October. That didn't quite come to pass, as they fell in 27-21 fashion to the Tornadoes and finished with six...
