    Nathan Price|Aug 28, 2023

The Fessenden Cooperative Association and CenDak Cooperative will officially merge. It was made official on Monday, Aug. 21, when member-owners met separately with their respective cooperatives in Maddock, N.D. to vote on the proposed "Unification Agreement," which was announced earlier this month and already approved by both boards of directors. Despite concerns being expressed by some member-owners, the "yays" won out, as both cooperatives voted to approve the unification. Had the...

  • Cowboy Strong: Local youth faces cancer battle

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 28, 2023

He stands 6'4", a solidly-built young adult of 19 years old, who has, so far, held his own against all that life has had to throw at him. Whether it be football, wrestling or the rodeo arena, Kaulder Kvamme, son of Jeff and Jona Kvamme of Carrington, has projected the image of quiet confidence, with a touch of cockiness and hint of a sassy attitude that his mom would argue he inherited from his dad. In the course of the last few months, however, that sense of youthful invulnerability has been...

  • Field and Garden: Community garden update, and questions

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Aug 28, 2023

Thirteen gardeners planted 24 plots in Carrington’s community garden this year. It’s been fun watching the gardeners experiment with new crops and new techniques. One technique that really worked well was the use of clear plastic to mulch melon plants. The plastic warmed the soil and increased melon growth in early summer. My experiment using the Florida weave to tie up tomatoes was less successful. I’ll be looking for a different method next year. There are some nice pumpkins in the commu...

  • Books & Bits: Libraries are not obsolete

    Michele Seil, Carrington City Librarian|Aug 28, 2023

With ebooks, digital streaming, gaming, and social media becoming more prevalent each year, some ask, “Are libraries obsolete?” Definitely not! Of course, being a librarian, you’d expect me to say that. The first proof comes from the publishing world: Ebook sales have indeed increased over the past few years, but print books have experienced an even larger surge in sales. Facts according to publishing industry statistics: • Over 4 million new books were published in 2022, including both self-pu...

  • International Overdose Awareness Day

    Aug 28, 2023

Observed on August 31 every year, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use. The situation is especially severe in the US. In 2021, provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated there were 107,622 drug overdose deaths, an increase of 15 percent from 2020. In North Dakota, 82 overdose deaths are...

  • Around the State: August 28, 2023

    Leasa A. Lura|Aug 28, 2023

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Shelter from the storm Some have been dreaming of storm shelters at Golden Lake for many years, and now due to the diligent work of many, including Steele County Emergency Director Ben Gates and Steel County Sheriff Wayne Beckman, those dreams were turned into a reality this summer. Gates explained that...

  • The survey says

    Amy Wobbema|Aug 28, 2023

I’m one of the lucky ones. I have been selected to be part of two surveys for the U.S. Census Bureau in the past year. No, these aren’t the types that ask nicely for your participation, offer you a free meal or a dollar or any token of appreciation for your answers. Rather, they are required by law, as is the decennial census that all Americans must fill out. Once you get “chosen,” you’re stuck. They send you emails and letters that don’t stop until you answer all their questions, sometimes m...

  • Upside Down Under: A step too far. . .

    Marvin Baker|Aug 28, 2023

Have you heard about this incident in Marion County, Kansas? Apparently the police chief ordered a raid on the local newspaper, the Marion County Record and seized computers, cell phones, a router and photographed the entire office. When this story broke, the reason for the raid didn’t make any sense. The publisher was investigating a DUI. Newspaper editors do that all the time. That shouldn’t be cause for a raid. But on Tuesday, the Kansas City Star reported the publisher was actually inv...

  • Guest: Hop on down to San Antone

    Jase Graves|Aug 28, 2023

These days, getting all three of my semi-grown daughters together for a family activity is like herding cats who have cars, jobs at coffee shops and their own debit cards. So, when our girls were able to pencil us in for a quick weekend trip to San Antonio, my wife and I jumped at the chance . . . or sort of hopped. Our backs hurt. Our justification for this little getaway was back-to-school shopping, which has come a long and expensive way from a new box of crayons and a Hello Kitty lunch bag....

  • Dakota Gardener: The myth of high phosphorus fertilizers

    Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Aug 28, 2023

In my youth, I worked for a well-known Minnesota garden center. My co-workers and I would be frequently asked why a customer's dahlia, geranium or other prized ornamental plant wasn't blooming. Without fail, we would sell the customer a high phosphorus fertilizer to stimulate flower production. In my current position as a North Dakota State University Extension horticulture specialist, my job is to give objective, evidence-based recommendations to help home gardeners. Thankfully, I am not...

  • Dakota Datebook: Magic of state highways

    Aug 28, 2023

For adventure in North Dakota, sometimes you have to look a little harder. State Highway 36 is a good place to start. The east-west roadway runs for about 90 miles between Wilton and Pingree in central North Dakota. There's plenty to see and do along the roadway, especially since Robinson, North Dakota has claimed the geographical center of the continent. Mayor Bill Bender registered the federal trademark after the city of Rugby let its claim lapse. Today, Robinson claims it's "the only...

  • Savvy Senior: Retirement planning tips for single women

    Jim Miller|Aug 28, 2023

Dear Savvy Senior, What retirement planning tips can you recommend to single women? I’m a divorced 58-year-old women with a teenaged son and have very little saved for retirement. Financially Vulnerable Dear Vulnerable, It’s an unfortunate reality, but many single women – whether they’re divorced, widowed or never married – face much greater financial challenges in retirement than men. The reasons behind this are because women tend to earn less money – about 82 cents for every dollar that...

  • Not quite enough: Cards fall to Bottineau, 36-34, in opener

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 28, 2023

Carrington stepped onto the turf for the first game of 2023, with a team short on depth, but high on potential playmaking ability. And according to the stat sheet, they accomplished the second part of that equation. However, the Bottineau Braves had just enough game-changers of their own to take a narrow 36-34 win in Carrington Friday night, August 18. In spite of 330 yards passing by Cardinal quarterback Josh Bickett, including four touchdowns, the Braves came out on top in the entertaining...

  • Complete effort lifts HWC over Rugby, 38-14

    Lane Moellenkamp|Aug 28, 2023

One play does not make a game. The Hornet defense literally had one play all game that they could look back on with question, but that one play motivated the defense to step it up a notch in a 38-14 season opening win over the Rugby Panthers in Harvey on Friday, August 18. The Panthers' Tucker Volk opened the first offensive series of the season for Rugby with a quarterback draw that went up the middle and around the right edge for a 53-yard score. An Austin Schneibel PAT run made the score 8-0...

The Hatton/Northwood Thunder scored touchdowns in all four quarters to outdistance the Griggs/Midkota Titans, 28-8, in the opening week of football Friday night, August 18, in Northwood. Six-foot-three, 175-pound senior receiver Ander Thorsgard recorded three of those scores, beginning with a 14-yard run in the first quarter, and later crossing the pylons via both a run and pass completion, each covering 40 yards. Thunder quarterback Derek Carpenter threw two touchdown passes, one to Thorsgard...
