For some districts, such as the Bismarck Public School system, this switch occurred nearly two...
Drive by my house and you’re likely to say to yourself, “There’s a lawn that has some issues.” Dandelions, thistles and a host of other weed species have gained a large foothold in my yard. Getting them under control is going to take some work. The good news is there is no better time to get started than now, during the month of September. Dandelions and thistles are getting ready for winter by transporting nutrient reserves to their root systems. We can take advantage of this phenome...

My mother made me do it! Rather, she really didn't make me, she actually taught me how to do it through lots of hard work and all the time I spent in her garden as a kid. I have and never did regret it, though, because of what followed in my life to date in the hobby of gardening. The thought of this came to mind following the story carried in this paper a couple weeks ago featuring the Community Garden Project currently underway in the city. It all started, as I remember, that Dad and I were...
If you don’t know or understand French, let me clarify what this headline means. Simply put, it’s “stop the sugar.” As mentioned in the past, this weekly column is mostly about events happening in North Dakota, or the surrounding states or provinces. This week I feel compelled to write about sugar, or “sucre” in French. A few nights ago after packing products for the farmers’ market, I had some odd shaped cucumbers left over so I decided to make a cucumber salad since these cucumbers did...
My cover has been outed. A friend said he Googled me and discovered that I was older than dirt. Since it may not be dirt from the Garden of Eden, the cat is out of the bag and the truth must be told. I was born prematurely and have been on a dead run since. It was during the Great Depression when I became the eighth in the family of 11 – and we weren’t even Catholic. For my mom, the depression got to be greater so she wanted to name my “Depressing” but my Dad found a Lloyd in English history...

For more than thirteen hundred years, the Dakota prairies were home to some of the most extensive trading centers on the American continent. As early as 350 A.D., there existed a highly developed network of trade throughout North America. Centrally positioned on the American continent, the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara villages located along the Missouri River served as two of the network’s main trading centers. At these trading sites the Cree, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Comanche, Teton and Crow nations traded goods from around the continent. A...

The Bottineau Braves, in their one season of nine-man football in 2021, came tantalizingly close to advancing to the Dakota Bowl. Dreams of showcasing their abilities on the Fargodome turf were dashed by eventual state champion LaMoure/Litchville-Marion in the semifinals, 20-6. The Braves and Coach Zach Keller made the move back up to Class 11B this year, and Carrington was their first opponent out of the gate. CHS played competitively with a quality opponent, but fell to 0-1 with a 26-14 loss...

G-M (0-1) scored their only touchdown of the game in the second quarter when quarterback Brady Haugen scored on a keeper behind the blocking of Isaac Stadler and Levi Kautzman, putting the finishing touches on a 15-play drive. However, the Titans spent much of the game dealing with the effectiveness of the Colts' "T" offense, popularized by the University of Mar...
Two fourth quarter scores for Harvey-Wells County turned a slim six-point lead into a 20-point victory, as the Hornets started the season 1-0 by defeating the Rugby Panthers in Rugby on Friday, August 19. Both the Hornets and Panthers were pretty conservative to start the night, but HWC got the scoring rolling on their second possession. It only took a couple of plays but the highlight was a 48-yard scamper by Kayl Sieg, setting up a three-yard touchdown run from Tallen Thorson. The PAT was...
HWC's run last year didn't end the way that they had hoped for but gave the returning players for this year a taste of what the postseason is all about. Coach Bret Dockter enters his 9th year as head coach of Harvey-Wells County and his 26th year coaching overall. Dockter knows where his team's strengths and weaknesses lie and he...
