  • Ready, set, JunkFest!

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 5, 2022

It might be her first year organizing JunkFest solo, but Missy Hafner is getting it done with a little help from her friends. The gates to the Foster County Fairgrounds will open wide at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, and a weekend of treasure hunting will commence. Cassie Smith gracefully retired from organizing after the 2021 event, and it didn't take long for Hafner to make a decision about its future. "I wasn't quite ready to let it go," Hafner said. "It's a big community event and an outlet...

After hauling the charming old pink trailer behind her pickup in front of Farmers Union Insurance/Harildstad Tax Service, or setting up her business at local events, Fiebiger wanted a more permanent location to sell her sweet and peppy delights. • Field and Garden: Rain boosts harvest hopes in parts of county

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster Co.|Sep 5, 2022

Rainfall amounts varied significantly across Foster County during August. A series of weather systems brought as much as 1.5 inches of rain to parts of the county during the middle part of the month. Other areas haven’t been as fortunate. McHenry, for example, reported just 0.3 inches of precipitation between Aug. 1 and 31. That’s just 13 percent of normal. Rain showers slowed small grain harvest for a brief period, but combines were soon back in the field and making rapid progress. On Aug. 26,...

  • The butterfly effect

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 5, 2022

We’ve had some heavy news weeks this summer. Burglaries, fatal crashes, residents fighting cancer, and a suspected murder-suicide were among the hard news headlines of the summer 2022 news cycle in our area. That said, we’ve also celebrated a lot. Our communities have a way of coming together when we really need to, don’t we? When I reflect on this past summer, a song by The Byrds comes to mind, “Turn, Turn, Turn.” We’ve had “A time to dance, a time to mourn,” all in the past few months. Ple...

  • Upside Down Under: Paris of the Prairie. . .

    Marvin Baker|Sep 5, 2022

A woman with four young children stopped by the farmers’ market last week and she said they had just moved to North Dakota from Louisiana. “From hurricanes to blizzards,” she said. But, she seemed happy to be in Minot and her kids were relaxed and appeared to be having fun. As our conversation continued, she asked myself and my intern what there is to do around here? Of course, our answers centered around the usual things to do; high school sports, fishing on the lakes, traveling to touri...

  • Guest: The elephant in the college classroom

    Tom Purcell|Sep 5, 2022

“Half of that goes to the bank for your college fund!” That’s what my father told me in the 8th grade, when I got my first paycheck for waking up at 5:30 a.m. to ride my bike a few miles to Cool Springs Driving Range before school, where I plucked golf balls for a dollar an hour. My dad had six kids to feed on a single income, after all. Paying my full college tuition bill was never going to be an option. There was only one option for me: work. When I got a little older I started mowing lawns...

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Syttende Mai in 1914, a number of Norwegian-Americans living in North Dakota marked the occasion by presenting a gift to their Norwegian brethren still living in the old country. Inspired by a similar work of art at Gettysburg, the group decided to commission a bust of Abraham Lincoln, collected the needed money and hired the then little-known Norwegian-American artist Paul Fjelde to sculpt it. • Dakota Datebook: Time Capsule 1976

    Sep 5, 2022

From the cave drawings of the Sahara to the tombs of the pharaohs, humankind has sought to communicate through the ages. However, never has there been a more deliberate attempt to speak to future generations than the time capsule. In 1939, the World’s Fair in New York City interned a time capsule which included a baseball, a Sears Roebuck Catalog, an electric lamp, a deck of cards, cigarettes, and the Bible. On September 7 in 1976, a time capsule was accepted by Governor Link on behalf of North Dakota from the Reynolds Metal Company of C...

  • Dakota Gardener: North Dakota Forestry by the numbers

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Sep 5, 2022

I’ve completed nearly 20 years at NDSU as the Extension forester and I’ve seen a lot of the state (and its trees and forests) in that time. I sometimes wonder how many miles I’ve driven through the years. Numbers fascinate me. They can offer a clear understanding of a situation. For example, we could say that trees had great growth in 2022. My question would be, “How great is great”? What one person considers great, another person might consider to be average. Putting a number to that claim of g...
