    Erik Gjovik|Sep 11, 2023

When the quip comes out, "He just made a lot of money," credited to then-NDSU Coach Bob Babich in response to a play made in a rivalry game, you know greatness may just be coming your way. But Carrington's own Jim Kleinsasser put together a body of work in the college ranks that was more than just one grainy sprint-and-score that made the rounds in the early Internet days. Before he put on the pads for the Minnesota Vikings for 13 years, Jimmy, as he is affectionately called around these parts,...

  • Dakota Gardener: Bountiful harvest, plenty of love

Kelsey Deckert, Horticulture Agent, NDSU Extension, Burleigh and Morton Counties|Sep 11, 2023

We are in full swing of harvesting in our gardens. Although our growing season got off to a slow start, most gardens in the Dakotas are producing an abundance of tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and other produce now. This is a great opportunity to express our love with our family and friends by sharing our bountiful harvest. It feels wonderful to share, but there is only so much produce that family and friends are willing to take off your hands. We all know the running joke of leaving zucchinis...

  • Upside Down Under: The marvel that is Garrison Dam...

    Marvin Baker|Sep 11, 2023

Since July 4, my wife and I have had two opportunities to drive across Garrison Dam. The first trip’s destination was Rapid City and the second, Beulah. I drove the first time and she drove the second time. Have you ever taken a close look at that dam? It’s an incredible feat of engineering. Because I was the passenger the second time, I looked at things I don’t normally get to see as a driver. And as we passed from McLean County into Mercer County, the only thing I could think of is the press...

  • Perspective: Let's outlaw elephants on railroad tracks

    Lloyd Omdahl|Sep 11, 2023

Assuming that election fraud is rampant in county offices and in the precincts, a band of 50 sponsors are proposing to pass a constitutional amendment to prevent fraud. The problem is that there is now no voter fraud in North Dakota, never has been, never will be. I have personally been involved in a survey of local election inspectors and states attorneys and did not find any reports of fraud. This is another case of passing legislation to restrict something that is unlikely to happen. In case...

  • Tacking a Tornado: Cards play nearly complete game in 33-8 victory against Cavalier

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 11, 2023

In their illustrious gridiron lore, the Cavalier Tornadoes have seen their fair share of triumph and heartbreak. In between six state championships, won from levels spanning the original Class B to nine-man and the then-Class AA level, the Tornadoes hit a string of bad luck the last four years. Four straight losses in the Dakota Bowl in the nine-man division were a double-edged sword, and moved Cavalier back up to 11B this season. Up in the higher classification, but now struggling with...

  • Cards outlast Tommies in thriller

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 11, 2023

The Thompson Tommies have always been on the short list of who's who in North Dakota Class B high school volleyball. Six-time defending Region 2 champions, including eight out of the last 10 years, five Class B championships and a coach (Lisa Strand) with over 1,000 career victories, means that their opponents have to bring their 'A' game to have a shot at a win. Carrington did just that Thursday night, August 31, and showed that they have the players to compete for postseason glory of their...
