Renamed Retzlaff Seed & Supply, LLC, Retzlaff purchased the business from David Swanson effective August 1, but will retain the former owner's commitment to excellent service to area crop producers. "I appreciate the opportunity to take over the Pioneer agency and continue working with customers that I have worked with over the last 20 years," Retzlaff says....

  • Field and Garden: Boxelder bugs are on the move again

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster Co.|Sep 12, 2022

I was outside watering last week when a crowd of small, red insects scattered in all directions from the base of one plant. I quickly recognized the insects to be immature boxelder bugs. It is a sign of things to come. As the days grow cooler, boxelder bugs will cluster together, often on the south- and west-facing sides of our homes. They are looking for heat. The bugs are fairly harmless. They don’t bite or contaminate food. If you can ignore them for a few more weeks, a hard frost will t...

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Several Carrington entities came together to organize Carrington’s first ever Walk to Fight Suicide on Sunday, September 11. Our community and surrounding communities have been impacted too much by suicide and its ripple effects. Our goal is to bring awareness of the prevalence of suicide, and how we can all help to prevent it. I want to share with you some statistics regarding suicide just to exhibit how big of a problem this really is. Did you k...

  • Clarification on September 5 article

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 12, 2022

The Independent and Sykeston Legion wish to issue a clarification regarding a point of emphasis which may have misled readers of last week’s feature article, “Honoring their sacrifice.” Sykeston Legion is a private business and is not affiliated with American Legion Post 17, aside from honoring them and the building’s history on their dedication wall....

    Leasa A. Lura|Sep 12, 2022

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Jim Wink donated his organs to 85 people When James “Jim” Dean Wink of Tolley passed away from a heart attack, his grieving family would never have imagined just how many people he would help in the ten years since his death. Wink had agreed to be an organ donor, a designation North Dakotans can make on th...

  • A little Homecoming nostalgia. . .

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 12, 2022

I have a song by Kenny Chesney in my head right now, “The Boys of Fall.” “Standin’ in the huddle listenin’ to the call Fans goin’ crazy for the boys of fall” Yes, it’s Homecoming, and this time of year, I drift back to the autumns of my youth. I’m a football fan to the core. It’s one of the only things I actually like about the fall season, in fact, other than the beauty of the leaves changing color. If I’m home and there’s a game to watch, it’s probably on the flat screen in my living room....

  • Upside Down Under: Terrific explosion revisited. . .

    Marvin Baker|Sep 12, 2022

Some locals in the Carpio area still talk about an explosion on a nearby farm that happened 100 years ago on Aug. 31. This was no ordinary explosion like you would think. It wasn’t gasoline and it wasn’t spontaneous combustion. This bomb went boom when 500 pounds of steam in a threshing crew boiler caused the boiler to blow up, sending debris all over the neighborhood and killing two men working on the boiler. According to an account in the Aug. 31, 1922 edition of the Renville County Far...

  • Guest: The danger of silencing words

    Christine Flowers|Sep 12, 2022

I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, some of them endearing, most of them not. When Barack Obama referred to conservatives like me as people who cling to our guns and religion, I was offended. Later, when Hillary Clinton called conservatives who weren’t going to vote for her a “basket of deplorables,” it looked as if another Democrat was employing crude, awkward rhetoric to gin up her base. It had the opposite effect, which helped put another guy in office who wasn’t shy about insulting...

  • Dakota Datebook: Memorial Bridge

    Sep 12, 2022

In 1922, Bismarck’s Liberty Memorial Bridge was a new way to cross the Missouri. Instead of crossing by boat or train, or in winter, on ice, cars could now cross the river freely. On September 14, the Bismarck Tribune boasted a front-page aerial photo of the three truss steel structure as one of the first transcontinental car routes. Before 1922, travelers went great distances north or south of Bismarck to cross the Missouri. Dedicated to the veterans of World War I on September 18, the bridge has served the community for 86 years and was d...

  • Dakota Gardener: It's a great time to fertilize your lawn

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Sep 12, 2022

Early fall is the most important time to fertilize your lawn. The key to a beautiful lawn is a strong, deep root system. Your lawn grows most of its roots in fall. Feed your lawn around Labor Day and it will grow stronger, deeper roots this fall. As a bonus, fertilizing in early fall can repair any damage to your lawn caused by the heat of summer, strengthen your lawn for the cold of winter and lead to a quicker green-up in spring. Select a winterizer fertilizer. This fertilizer has the nitrogen...
