  • Local partners launch 'Bras 4 A Cause'

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 30, 2024

You may recall seeing clotheslines of bras on Main Street businesses in Carrington last October. Well, they're back, and this year Foster County Public Health, CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington and the Foster County Independent are teaming up to raise the line even higher and spread awareness farther. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we're taking this opportunity to raise awareness about breast health, highlight the importance of screenings and early detection, and provide support...

  • The Great Pumpkins

    Sep 30, 2024

A 155-pound pumpkin grown by Mason Cook took first place at the 2024 Foster County Pumpkin Contest, held at The Market in Carrington City Park on Sept. 17. Cook competed in the senior youth division. In the junior youth division, Lois Wede entered the heaviest pumpkin at 87 pounds, while Steve Zwinger's 143-pound pumpkin won in the adult division. The contest saw participation from four adults and 23 youths, showcasing a total of 31 pumpkins. The awards for best traditional pumpkin went to...

  • Field and Garden: Fall is best for dandelion control

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Sep 30, 2024

If you are bothered by dandelions in your lawn, now is the time to act. As the weather cools, dandelions begin channeling energy to their roots in preparation for winter. Herbicides applied at this time will also travel to the roots, effectively killing the plants. The best herbicides for broadleaf weeds like dandelions are Trimec formulations, which contain a blend of 2,4-D, mecoprop, and dicamba. Rather than treating the entire lawn, it’s more efficient to spot-treat weeds or problem areas. T...

  • EHD a threat to deer populations

    Sep 30, 2024

Since late August, wildlife biologists have been monitoring scattered reports of white-tailed deer found dead in a portion of southwestern North Dakota. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease was confirmed in a number of these cases. “EHD is a viral disease transmitted by biting gnats,” said Dr. Charlie Bahnson, Game and Fish wildlife veterinarian. “We see a low level of EHD most years. It typically stays fairly localized, but every so often it can intensify into a significant die-off. The combined outbreak in 2020 and 2021 was probably the worst in me...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: The situation with sage grouse

Doug Leier, Biologist, North Dakota Game and Fish Department|Sep 30, 2024

I keep three North Dakota OUTDOORS calendars on the wall in my office. When I glance up and see a dark shaded day I know it's pretty significant. A season opener or application deadline is reason for a second look. While glancing at September I recalled how years ago there would be a three day stretch mid-week indicating the open and close of the sage grouse season. I think back to 30 years ago when the hunting fellas and I would suggest, "We should head west sage grouse hunting." The mutual...

  • Around the State: September 30, 2024

    Leasa A. Lura|Sep 30, 2024

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Commissioners address report of hemlock The Emmons County Commission, at its regular meeting held September 3 at the Emmons County Courthouse, Linton, heard a report from county week board control officer C.J. Pearce about the possible sighting of water hemlock in the county. Water hemlock is a highly...

  • New experiences at steam show

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 30, 2024

I rode on the back of a steam engine this past weekend. I’ve lived in New Rockford for 20 years and have made the short trip to the Central North Dakota Steam Threshers Reunion for nearly every one. I’ve also covered the local steam show for the Transcript 10 straight years now. Each time I aim to capture something and someone new and different, as there are so many things to see and do on the grounds. They’ve recently added events as well, including tractor driving for the kids and a Frida...

  • Upside Down Under: To think they're volunteers...

    Marvin Baker|Sep 30, 2024

Sept. 14 was an unusual day in our little Ward County community of Carpio. It marked only the third time there had been a parade there in the past 20 years. This time it was the fire department’s parade. The local first responders were celebrating 75 years as a fire department and as a spectator looking on, it was impressive. The Carpio department brought out all the big guns, but that wasn’t all. Donnybrook, Tolley, Burlington, Berthold and Minot Rural fire departments were all involved, hel...

  • Guest: Tyrades!

    Danny Tyree|Sep 30, 2024

I confess to employing the occasional half-truth. In order to keep conversations moving (and save face), I sometimes mumble, “Sort of” when someone queries, “You know where ol’ (fill-in-the-blank) lives, don’t you?” Around these parts, it’s a major social faux pas if you don’t know some nodding acquaintance’s street address, the Vehicle Identification Number of their conveyance and their middle child’s school locker combination. In this part of the country, “I know where you live” is a nonneg...

  • From the Past: Land purchased at Juanita Lake

    Renee Hopkins|Sep 30, 2024

12 Years Ago October 6, 1949 The cause of the fire which did heavy damage in the Getty Cleaners and Furriers building Sunday afternoon has not been determined. The fire started at about 3 p.m. Sunday, and before the flames had been extinguished, the main floor in the central part of the building was badly damaged, and clothes in the pressing room were badly burned. In a critical condition in the Carrington Hospital is Darrell Peterson, 18, Bordulac, who was struck by a car on the highway at...

  • Dakota Gardener: A year of notable events

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Sep 30, 2024

My meteorologist friends tell me that the word "normal" has very little meaning, as no year is ever really normal. Does that mean that every year is "abnormal"? I fear that the answer would take a long time and involve a deep dive into statistics. Maybe we'll just say that the 2024 growing season was weird. Or perhaps we'll call it "notable." That sounds a little more scientific. The year started out with a lot of moisture, throughout much of the region. In some places, it was so wet that...

  • Savvy Senior: How to arrange your own cremation service

    Jim Miller|Sep 30, 2024

Dear Savvy Senior, I would like to arrange a simple cremation that doesn’t cost me, or my family, a lot of money. Can you offer any tips that can help me with this? Still Kicking Dear Kicking, If you’re looking for a simple and affordable way to go, cremation is an excellent choice, and one that’s become exceedingly popular in the United States. About 60 percent of Americans are now choosing cremation over a traditional burial, versus only around 20 percent in the mid-1990s. Why the big shift? P...

  • Aggies crash Cards' party

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

Circumstances can turn on a dime in the span of two weeks. Two weeks previously, the Carrington football team was riding high following a convincing win over Grafton to improve to 3-0. But an overtime defeat to the rival HWC Hornets by one point, 28-27, meant the Cardinals needed to regroup and quickly against another hungry Park River Area squad. On the strength of big games on the ground by Tucker Omdahl and Brennan Schramm, and timely passing by the Aggies' Jace Rosinski, Carrington's strong...

  • G/M routs Patriots, 30-6

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

You could say that the Griggs/Midkota Titans' 30-6 GCC Homecoming victory Friday, Sept. 20, over the May-Port-CG Patriots was a bit of karmic retribution for the last game the two teams played in 2022. In a 49-0 loss that year, the Titans were trailing MPCG by 37 with under a half minute remaining in the first half off a fumble deep in Patriot territory, when the opponents decided to resort to a hook-and-ladder play for a 76-yard touchdown for one last insult. G/M Coach (and Portland native)...

  • HWC keeps rolling with big win over Bottineau Braves

    Lane Moellenkamp|Sep 30, 2024

Harvey-Wells County put together two important things against Bottineau, and the result was a dominating win against a one- loss team as they routed the Braves, 35-14, on Friday, September 20 at L.C Loerch Field in Harvey. The two things that the Hornets excelled at were defensive pressure and the ground game. HWC, behind three sacks each from Tyler Swang and Christian Mertz, accumulated eight sacks overall, and had seven other plays that went down as tackles for loss, including three more from...

  • Cards take down Rockets; sweep Loboes

    Kyrie Dauenhauer and Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

Although the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Carrington Cardinals are in different regions, the rivalry is still aflame. On Thursday, Sept. 19, the Rockets hosted the rivals to the south during the Cardinals' homecoming week, in hopes of being named the homecoming crushers once again. After three games, the Rockets were still working out their kinks and trying to get a good rotation locked in. With that, NR-S senior Tillie Swart made her varsity debut during the second and third sets...

  • HWC blanks 'Chucks, beat G/M in 5

    Lane Moellenkamp|Sep 30, 2024

Harvey-Wells County cruised in their Region 4 volleyball matchup in Harvey with St. John on Tuesday, September 17. The Hornets held the Woodchucks to 30 total points in three games en route to winning their fifth game of the year against just three losses. Braylee Keller started the night out on the right foot, as the sophomore had two kills to open game one. Kali Fike added an ace and a kill and HWC had a quick 6-1 lead. The lead grew to 11-1 on back-to-back kills from Rylee Jones. Three HWC...

  • In District 6 battle, Lions edge Thunder

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2024

The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder volleyball team showed their mettle as a Region 3 contender with solid showings in a two-match split September 19 and 21. In Pingree, M/P-B didn't let a first set loss to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion faze them, as they bounced back from that three-point defeat with 25-15, 25-14 and 25-21 wins over the Loboes. The District 6 match of the year followed two days later, with the number one and two teams in the league, Linton-HMB and M/P-B, battling it out for who...
