The North Dakota Wheat Commission is celebrating National Pasta Month in October as a way to recognize the state’s durum producers, mills, and pasta manufacturers and the role they play in putting pasta on the plates of consumers. Each year, a new theme is developed to celebrate the occasion. This year’s theme is “From Fields of Wheat to Plates of Pasta,” a way to recognize the fact that the durum produced in our state ends up as pasta on the plates of consumers here and around the word. North Dakota remains the largest durum producing state i...

October is breast cancer awareness month. Everyone can name someone that has been affected by breast cancer due to the fact that it affects 1 in 8 women. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cancer death in women. Starting yearly mammograms at age 40 has helped cut breast cancer deaths by more than 40 percent. That being said, only 10% of women receiving mammograms at CHI Carrington are between the ages of 40 and 49. This statistic is alarming. If you... Full story

As we passed fields of harvest-ready soybeans, the agronomist traveling with me commented, “Three weeks ago, I never would have imagined our crops maturing this fast.” I felt the same way. In early September, I was checking corn growth models daily, wondering if the crop would reach maturity before the first frost. But then the rain stopped, and temperatures rose. During the last two weeks of September, we had eight days when the mercury climbed above 80 degrees. The warm temperatures, cou...

Measure 2 is a direct assault on the freedoms North Dakotans have cherished for generations. Article III of the North Dakota Constitution, titled “Powers Reserved to the People,” ensures that we, the citizens, have the power to make decisions that directly impact our lives. However, politicians behind Measure 2 are attempting to erode that power by introducing changes that fundamentally undermine majority rule and weaken the value of your vote. At its core, Measure 2 tramples on the principle of “one person, one vote,” a cornerstone of our demo...
Two weeks ago I was at Bismarck State College for an event and it had been 38 years since I was on campus. It has changed drastically, but it was fun to be back there if only for a few hours. When it was my time to speak, I started with asking a question. “How many of you are Bismarck High School graduates?” Approximately 10 people raised their hands of the roughly 60 in attendance. Then I asked them if they know who Weston Dressler is? They all said they at least recognized his name. Unf...
When the weather turns damp and horrible and all I want to do is curl up by the radiator, my coworkers always get the bright and chirpy idea of going canoeing together. Lake temperatures tend to be somewhere between “frigid” and “freezing,” while my preferred swimming temperature is “jacuzzi.” And I’m not a fan of feeling miserable, unless I’ve just listened to an emo album. So when the old canoeing / kayaking / getting soaked in a boat idea came up, it was just bad luck that I had been indulg...

"I finally carved a pumpkin," my daughter announced. I kind of knew what was coming next. "My friends couldn't believe I had never done that!" she exclaimed. "We always had pumpkins, but we usually painted faces on them," I reminded. She was not happy with my explanation. She felt totally deprived. I did not appreciate the slimy stuff that comes out of pumpkins. I would have been the clean-up crew. We did not have the safe carving tools back then, so I was thinking about potential emergency...

Coach Kyle Smith wasn't shy about saying it. "That was one of the bigger wins Carrington football has had for quite some time," the coach quipped following the team's 27-19 stunner on the road over the Langdon Area/Munich Cardinals Friday night, October 4. One would have to go back to 2015 for the last time CHS defeated the northern Cardinals on the field. So long, in fact, that current assistant coach Walker Carr played for that Carrington squad. The bonkers back-and-forth affair featured a...
The end of two different droughts were celebrated in consecutive weeks for Griggs/Midkota. First of all, the Titans will officially make their return to the North Dakota football playoffs after an 18-year absence. This week, G/M cinched their first outright regional championship since the 2001 season – and first as a co-op – with a 51-0 win over the Richland Colts Friday night, October 4. Even though they would have had the Region 2 crown anyway by virtue of their head-to-head wins over Enderlin...
Harvey-Wells County continues to dominate their opponents on the football field as the regular season comes to an end in just a short two weeks. The latest team to feel the Hornet wrath was the Grafton Spoilers, as the rushing game helped put up 35 second quarter points and the defense shut down all aspects of the Spoiler offense in a 53-14 win on Friday, October 4 at L.C. Loerch Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harvey. It took a couple of possessions, but the Hornets found the scoring column...
