  • Field and Garden: Crop harvest underway as gardens end for season

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Oct 16, 2023

f you think we’ve had a lot of foggy weather this fall, then you’d be right. By my count, the National Weather Service in Bismarck issued seven dense fog advisories in September and two more in early October. The damp, foggy weather and several rain events slowed progress during the first weeks of soybean harvest. Fortunately, the long-term forecast indicates we can expect warmer and drier than normal weather during the second half of this month. That is welcome news to farmers who are und...

The small but mighty crowd of 40 people learned how the center is supporting women facing unplanned pregnancies and raised over $5,500. Local Knights of Columbus Council 4951 led the walk. The local Life Savers, a multi-denominational pro-life group, organized the event....

Soybean harvest is in full swing across North Dakota, with field corn and sunflowers to follow. "Equipment fires, specifically combine...

  • It pays to be a member

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 16, 2023

This National Co-op Month, I recognize that many of the cooperatives operating today were established for the benefit of people. It didn’t take much effort to put together a list of cooperatives we do business with on a daily basis. After all, I’ve been a member of cooperatives since I was a young girl. My extended family have been members of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative (formerly Tri-County Electric) my entire life. The family farm and my parents’ home are served by this all-i...

  • Upside Down Under: One grows, one shrinks

    Marvin Baker|Oct 16, 2023

During the second half of the 1990s, I operated the newspaper in Langdon and often made short, 38-mile trips to Morden, Manitoba, for various reasons. At the time, Langdon’s population was about 2,500 and Morden was just shy of 5,000. That has always been a snapshot in my mind, until a couple of weeks ago. I was looking through some information about the Corn and Apple Festival in Morden and saw that Morden’s population is now nearly 11,000. When I checked Langdon’s population, it was 1,884...

  • Guest: We need a rebirth of empathy

    Tom Purcell|Oct 16, 2023

When I read a news piece about the passing of longtime California senator Dianne Feinstein a few weeks ago, some of the comments left at the bottom of the online article made me sad. Feinstein suffered a very public health decline before she passed. Anyone with the slightest sense of empathy would think “there but for the grace of God go I” — as every one of us could suffer a similar decline before our time finally comes. Empathy is in short supply these days, however. I don’t recall the exact w...

  • Dakota Gardener: Next year's gladiolus

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Oct 16, 2023

This summer I planted gladiolus flowers in the pots in front of my house. The vertical bladed leaves added height that I was missing in my containers. The gladiolus flowers were from a mixed bag, so it was exciting to see what colors I would get. Not one of the colors, red, pink, coral, white and yellow, were disappointing. Gladiolus flowers are grown from a type of bulb called a “corm.” The term “bulb” can mean any underground plant storage structure. These structures help the plant reprodu...

    Jim Miller|Oct 16, 2023

Dear Savvy Senior, What is the best way to ensure my pets are taken care of after I’m gone? I have two dogs and a cat that are my four-legged family, and I want to make sure they’ll be well taken care of after I die. Solo Senior Dear Solo, It’s a great question. Every year, approximately 500,000 cats and dogs enter shelters when their pet parents experience an emergency or pass away.
