  • The standard setters

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2024

Their exploits may not be memorialized with a red championship banner, but it's hard to imagine the trajectory of Carrington Cardinal wrestling becoming what it has been without the hard work of the pioneering 1973-74 team to demonstrate what is possible. Led onto the mats by legendary CHS Coach Al Larson, the Cards achieved what was by far their greatest season in the young program's existence, bringing home the second place trophy in the Class A division with 57 points. Since then, Carrington...

    Independent staff reports|Nov 4, 2024

Election day is nearly upon us, and once again there are plenty of important decisions to make at the ballot box. Although there aren't any locally- contested races in Foster County, there are plenty of choices to be made on statewide issues and regarding who will represent us at the state and national level. Locally, three Foster County commissioners are all running for re-election. Pat Copenhaver, Becky Hagel and David Utke are all running unopposed for another four-year term on the...

    Leasa A. Lura|Nov 4, 2024

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. Watson participates in horror contest Scott Watson has always been a fan of horror movies, so much so that he recently entered himself in the online Face of Horror competition. • Call for compassionate immigration reform

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 4, 2024

The United States of America is a nation of immigrants. My ancestors came from Germany, Norway and Scotland, among others. We have people coming to our communities from the Philippines, Ukraine, Venezuela and other countries right now. Yes, there are barriers. No, it isn’t easy to integrate new people, especially when language limits communication and the American way takes some getting used to. When I first heard about the Uniting 4 Ukraine program developed by the Carrington City Council, I w...

  • Upside Down Under: Annoying and creepy...

    Marvin Baker|Nov 4, 2024

There’s no doubt we’re having a mild autumn thus far. How many times do we go into the second half of October with overnight temperatures remaining above freezing or just barely freezing? And daytime highs, on select days of course, have been “hot” for this time of year, especially when the sun is shining. We’ll take it, right? We love an extended summer here on the northern Great Plains. But, there’s one problem with this scenario. On sunny days we see box elder bugs plastered on the sides o...

  • Guest: Ever experience sibling rivalry?

    Danny Tyree|Nov 4, 2024

My brother and I just experienced what I believe was our longest one-on-one, face-to-face chat ever. (Yes, even longer than the long-ago heart-to-heart conversation highlighted by “Throw another dart at me…and another…nyah nyah, missed me…”) We had our differences growing up (maybe I shouldn’t have been so dismissive of his taste in music and TV shows, and maybe I was overly sensitive when he named a cow after my first girlfriend); but it was comforting to be able to talk in a civil manner abou...

  • Dakota Gardener: Winter protection for tender roses

    Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Nov 4, 2024

We have been blessed by an unusually lovely fall in the northern Great Plains. Unfortunately, the long-range weather forecast promises that all good things must come to an end. Before winter is upon us, gardeners should consider protecting tender roses. Most hybrid tea, floribunda and grandiflora roses were bred for warmer climates and cannot survive northern winters without protection. Resourceful gardeners have devised many methods to protect tender roses. Regardless of the method, timing is...

  • Viking raid

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2024

Like their historical namesakes, the Kindred Vikings were in attack mode, and there wasn't much left of the Carrington Cardinals when Thor's hammer came crashing down. The top-ranked team in Class A certainly showed it Saturday, Oct. 26, scoring 42 first half points and rolling over the Cards, 48-14, in the opening round of playoff action at Kindred's Jerlow Field. Try as they might, the Cardinal running game could not muster any kind of success, whether laterally or straight ahead against the...

  • Titans' magic comes to close

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2024

They were having so much fun on the football field, it was a shame to see it all end. The Griggs/Midkota Titans' resurgent 2024 football season witnessed them improve dramatically from just one victory the season before to six this fall. With Wyndmere/Lidgerwood coming to town for the first playoff game in 18 years, the atmosphere was festive in Cooperstown Saturday, Oct. 26. Even though the Warbirds ended the Titans' campaign with a 44-24 loss, one can't help but feel that the G/M program has...

  • Defense's effort lifts HWC to win

    Lane Moellenkamp|Nov 4, 2024

Harvey-Wells County put together an incredible defensive effort and the offense controlled the ball and clock throughout the game, claiming a 14-7 victory over Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm (E/E/K) at L.C. Loerch Field in Harvey, on Saturday, October 26. Just how good was the defense? It was vastly improved from their first outing against E/E/K, where the Thunder running game racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground. In this playoff game, the visitors were near 100 yards on the ground, and scored 21...

  • Born to run

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2024

A pleasant breeze and mid-50 degree weather provided almost-perfect running conditions for the State Class B Cross Country Meet at Parkhurst Recreation Area north of Jamestown Friday afternoon, Oct. 25. It was a far cry from last year's meet, which was blanketed by a fresh layer of snow and frigid temperatures. The climate allowed for some fast times, and Carrington senior Kenadie Pazdernik capped off a great scholastic running career with a pair of honors. Pazdernik finished in seventh place...

  • Thunder roll past CHS in three

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2024

If the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder show the level of energy they did in taking three sets from rival Carrington (25-9, 25-21 and 25-20) on Monday, October 28, good things could be coming for them in the postseason. The big two of Brynn Sorenson (21 kills) and Maddie Gefroh (19) ruled the day for the Thunder, now 26-5 heading into District 6 play. Violet Bohl had 39 assists for M/P-B and Cierra Mack contributed 25 digs. Isabel Wendel led the Cardinals (16-10) with five kills and 10 assists....
