  • Dakota Gardener: What's it worth to you?

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Nov 11, 2024

Over the last 12 months, I've received more than 600 emails, text messages, phone calls and other forms of communication where people asked me a question related to trees and forests. Yes, I actually track those numbers. One of the more interesting questions came a few weeks ago and it was pretty simple. How much is a mature shelter belt worth? Oh, where to begin? The question was straightforward, but a simple response was impossible. There are too many unknowns. What resource is being...

  • The Origins of Veterans Day

    Nov 11, 2024

In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, D.C., became the focal point of reverence for America's veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation's highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11,...

  • Upside Down Under: What an honor...

    Marvin Baker|Nov 11, 2024

Often times we focus on the negative and how nothing seems to go right. Instead, we should always try to think of the glass as half full rather than half empty. Sometimes good things do happen to us, but we tend to live in the moment then forget about it. An event like that happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I want to share it with readers. I was invited to spend a morning with the staff at the Mystician, the Bismarck State College newspaper. When I got there, I met editor-in-chief Kayden...

  • Guest: Thanksgiving on the mantel

    Jase Graves|Nov 11, 2024

Now that Halloween is over and I’ve almost polished off that jumbo bag of snack-size Almond Joy bars that I “forgot” to distribute to trick-or-treaters, it’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. And speaking of gorging on holiday fare, Thanksgiving is an occasion when Americans express our deep appreciation for our country’s blessings by eating most of them. In preparation for this event, I like to adorn the house with a few decorations that remind my family of the historical significance...

  • Thunder finishes as District 6 runners-up

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 11, 2024

Medina/Pingree-Buchanan had a solid case as the "1-B" to Linton-HMB's number one position in the District 6 pecking order, as one of just four teams to defeat the Lions this season and a five-set loser in district play earlier in the year. However, the top-ranked team in the Class B volleyball poll took care of business on their home court Tuesday night, November 5, with a 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 18-25) defeat of the Thunder at district tournament play in Hazelton. Maddie Gefroh had 15 kills and thre...

  • Aggies power to 44-13 win to end Hornets' season

    Lane Moellenkamp|Nov 11, 2024

Velva/Drake-Anamoose/Garrison (V/D-A/G) used a potent but balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense to control the Hornets, as the Aggies picked up a 44-13 victory over Harvey-Wells County in the Class A 11-man quarterfinal football game in Velva on Saturday, November 2. Just a week removed from their first playoff win in co-op history, the Hornets matched the Aggies for the first quarter, but could not contend with the state's No. 2-ranked team after that point. V/D-A/G took the opening ki...

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 11, 2024

The Titans came to Ellendale for the District 5 Tournament Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and 4 as the fifth seed, hopeful to break into the next round of the postseason wars. And it took all of their energy to make it happen in their opener with Oakes, getting on the right side of a five-set marathon this time around with a 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 20-25 and 15-10 win over...

  • Hornets sweep FW/M in net finale; on to Region 4

    Lane Moellenkamp|Nov 11, 2024

Harvey-Wells County wasted little time in their final regular season match of the year, as they defeated the Four Winds/Minnewaukan Indians, 3-0, in Minnewaukan on Tuesday, October 29. The Hornets were tuning things up for the upcoming Region 4 Tournament and got off to a fast start. A 14-0 run to start the first game was just the way HWC wanted to start, and they cruised to a 25-7 victory. HWC got off to another great start in the second set, going up 8-2 early on aces from Kali Fike, Braylee...
