  • Food, family and friends

    Nathan Price|Nov 13, 2023

Here in North Dakota, there are few things better than the charming nature of a small town. It's one of the qualities many North Dakotans are most proud of, and for some towns, it's something they're trying desperately to hold on to. As the years go by, rural communities have struggled more and more to retain the local fixtures that provide that elusive charm, and many have lost them entirely. But some towns, like Grace City, N.D. with its population of around 50, are still holding on to their...

  • Blade work, snow removal fees go up for Foster townships

    Leasa A. Lura|Nov 13, 2023

Road maintenance costs for townships will creep up next year, but for a good reason. The Foster County Commission passed a motion at their meeting last week to increase the cost for blading and snow removal for townships. During the meeting held on Tuesday, November 7, the board agreed to increase the cost for townships with contracts from $110 to $140 and for those townships without contracts from $150 to $180. Commissioner David Utke said even at these increased rates the county still isn’t c...

We started the month with a near record high of 89 degrees on Oct. 1, and temperatures remained warmer than normal for most of the next three weeks. Everything changed when a weather system arrived on Oct. 24, bringing snow and cold to our area. The Carrington REC received 11 inches of snow, and the mercury plummeted to a near record low of three degrees on Oct. 31. Most soybeans had been harvested by...

    Leasa A. Lura|Nov 13, 2023

A few Sundays ago, the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery in Riverdale hosted two separate hikes on a part of the North Country Trail. • Frustration, focus and football

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 13, 2023

Frustration is the word of the day in the newsroom. It’s Monday, and subscriber newspapers have not been delivered to New Rockford, Fessenden and other rural post offices on time for the second week in a row. Our loyal readers, and this time the local postmaster herself, pick up the phone to notify us of the delay. “So what gives? Why isn’t the paper coming on time?” readers ask. I wish I had the answer. All the subscriber print copies of this newspaper were taken to the Fargo Post Office...

  • Upside Down Under: Is outmigration the answer?

    Marvin Baker|Nov 13, 2023

We have some friends who grew up in northeastern North Dakota, went to college at the University of North Dakota, then worked in Grand Forks for many years. Then, the husband got a job in Minneapolis that paid far better than anything he could have ever imagined in Grand Forks or Fargo. The wife was able to work from home after moving to the Twin Cities. For the past seven years, these two, who don’t have any children, are set. Their salaries together total a half million dollars a year, they b...

  • Guest: The year of the possum

    Jase Graves|Nov 13, 2023

According to my extensive research (approximately five minutes on Google when I should have been folding underwear), the Chinese zodiac system assigns an animal symbol to each year. It is believed that people born in a given year have the personality of that year’s animal. For example, based on the placemats at my favorite Chinese buffet, I was born in the Year of the Dog, which means I am loyal, honest and difficult to housebreak. Although it has absolutely nothing to do with the Chinese zodiac...

  • Lion tamers: CHS ends Linton-HMB's three-year reign as Region 3 champs in quarterfinals

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 13, 2023

Steeled from their season-long fight against the tough competition in District 5, the Carrington Cardinals were not a team for opponents to underestimate or look past. If the E-K-M Rebels occupied the proverbial "S-tier", then the Cardinals, along with LaMoure/Litchville-Marion and Oakes, definitely qualified as "A-tier" programs, to borrow the popular ranking convention. Three-time defending Region 3 champion and District 6 tournament winner Linton-HMB knew they were in for a battle no matter w...

  • Fighting to the end: M-P-B eliminated with 3-1 defeat vs. Oakes

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 13, 2023

If nothing else, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder left 2023 Region 3 volleyball fans with an everlasting memory of a team refusing to go gently into the night, and some respect for their heart and fortitude. M-P-B's season at the volleyball net came to a painful conclusion in a four-set defeat to the Oakes Tornadoes in the first round of regional play in Ellendale Monday, November 6. But, in true Thunder fashion, they made their opponent sweat out each and every volley, spike and dig, and tha...

  • HWC's season ends with loss to Cougars

    Lane Moellenkamp|Nov 13, 2023

When the four seed and five seed match up in the first round of any tournament, one would expect a great match, and even though this match was only three sets, the games were close throughout, with many ties and some fantastic rallies. The fourth seeded North Prairie Cougars were on the positive end of all of the great finishes, as they finished off each game with a solid run to defeat the four seed Harvey-Wells County, 3-0, in the opening round of the Region 4 Volleyball Tournament at the...

  • The agony of defeat: Cards fall to Loboes in five in Region 3 semis

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 13, 2023

Cinderella's slipper couldn't quite fit the Carrington Cardinals' foot. Try as they might, the Cards came back valiantly from a two-sets-to-none disadvantage, and forced a fifth set against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion with two victories. But the final race to 15 points was not to be, and the Loboes would stifle CHS' bid for their first State Class B Tournament appearance in 10 years with a 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-11, 12-15) loss in the semifinal round at the Region 3 Tournament Tuesday...
