  • County cuts road maintenance credit

    Nathan Price|Nov 18, 2024

Posted November 13, 2024 Local funding for Foster County townships has effectively been cut in half. The Foster County Commission carried a motion to do so at their regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7. Since 2022, the 18 townships of Foster County have each been receiving an annual credit of about $4,500 from their county government, which has gone toward blading and snow removal bills. Combined, that's approximately $80,000 a year the county hands out to its townships, and now commissioners...

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 18, 2024

Posted November 13, 2024 It's official. The Carrington School District will ask voters a second time for approval to increase the school's building fund levy from 5 to 10 mills. There's just one question on the ballot, and on January 25, 2025, polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for voters to make their choice. The school board previously approved the special election in October, pending the failure of Measure 4. However, the matter came up again at their meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12, due...

  • Boosting youth mental health access

Michael Standaert, North Dakota News Cooperative|Nov 18, 2024

Throughout her 25 years as a school social worker, Michelle Vollan can't recall a period when the number of acute youth mental health situations requiring hospitalization was as high as it was post-Covid. Vollan has seen anxiety issues increasing, and along with that, attendance concerns and drops in grades for those affected. On the most severe end of the spectrum, thoughts of suicide and self harm have increased leading to cases of psychiatric hospitalization. And while a spike two years ago...

  • Foster County to receive sizable social service reimbursement

    Nathan Price|Nov 18, 2024

Posted November 18, 2024 Last August, Foster County commissioners claimed that nearly $100,000 was owed to them by Wells County, which caught several county officials there off guard. The nearly $100K amounted to four years' worth of social service payments owed to Foster County that hadn't been distributed, and Wells County commissioners only learned of the problem after an article came out in the Independent. In the months since, Wells County Auditor Dan Stutlien and others have been poring...

  • North Dakota approves Summit carbon pipeline route

    Jeff Beach, North Dakota Monitor|Nov 18, 2024

November 15, 2024 North Dakota regulators on Friday approved a route permit for the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline, a significant win for what the company says is the world's largest carbon capture project. The three-person Public Service Commission voted unanimously to approve the pipeline permit. The commission had denied Summit a route permit in 2023, but changes the company made to its route helped convince the commission to reverse its position. Summit plans to put 333 miles of pipeline...

November 19, 2024 "It's the old story: no work and no pay make jack pretty scarce," as writer Howard Brubaker once said. Wander back to Christmas 1930 and the height of the Great Depression with DPRCA's heartwarming holiday musical, "The Gifts of the Magi," opening Saturday, Nov. 30. It is Christmas in New York, but for two young lovers, Jim and Della, the prospects are bleak. It's the height of the Great Depression and both are out of work and penniless. But as those familiar with O. Henry's...
