Eighteen interested participants later, the Cardinal mat girls are ready to step under the center light and into the circle this winter for the...

Changes in health care are a fact of life. Nowhere is this felt more than in rural facilities. Challenges that all health care systems face are magnified in small community hospitals and clinics. Staff shortages, lack of resources, the ongoing need to meet changing technological advances, and competition with larger facilities are always looming over smaller markets. CHI has released articles in the past months detailing individual providers and their areas of interest in medicine. This article...

  • Dakota Datebook: Turkey talk in McKenzie County

    Nov 21, 2022

Thanksgiving is coming! And while few decorate for this particular holiday with the same vigor they do for other holidays, there is one important item that almost everyone agrees makes for a necessity for this holiday: Whether it's turkey or tofurkey, that special entrée is the reason for this season. The Fargo Forum devoted a great deal of ink to the matter of turkeys during Thanksgiving week in 1928. Like us today, they were very concerned about the costs of the holidays. Luckily for them,...

  • Shoot low, sheriff, they're riding Shetlands

    Allen V. Stock|Nov 21, 2022

I don’t know why, but this past year I’ve gotten hooked on the TV reruns of Gunsmoke. And, the reason is easy to explain. I have cut out watching the news, most of which is on the national scene, but many nights I cancel out Fargo stations as well. Lots of it, if not most of the stories coming out of the east concern robberies, shootings, beatings, and stories you find on most national and small city stations. On the national scene, I have trouble watching and listening to what’s happe...

  • Upside Down Under: Fight night in North Dakota. . .

    Marvin Baker|Nov 21, 2022

When we think of boxing, I’ll bet the first thing that enters your mind is Virgil Hill. And for those who may be fairly new to North Dakota, Virgil Hill grew up in Grand Forks, earned a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics and had a very successful professional career. Hill is the “Roger Maris” of the boxing world and since the summer of 1984, there have been a lot of people who have taken up boxing thanks to Virgil Hill’s success. Anyone who has an interest in boxing can find a club in which t...

  • Perspective: Huge fallout from 2022 election

    Lloyd Omdahl|Nov 21, 2022

The runoff election in Georgia will be a waste of money. All signs point to a Warnock win and the Democrats will end up with a 2-seat edge in the U.S. Senate. For the party of the president to pick up rather than lose seats is very unusual. Looking at the past figures, political observers were unanimous in their expectation that the Democrats would lose both houses of Congress. Noted Prof. James Campbell observed 30 years ago: “In midterm elections, the greater a party’s prior presidential vote...

  • Prairie Fare: Keep food safety in mind during holidays

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Nov 21, 2022

My first attempt at cooking our Thanksgiving meal bordered on disaster. I was newly married, and I had not flown solo on cooking a holiday meal. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a large enough pan for the turkey. The turkey was wedged into my roasting pan clutching its breast with its wings. The turkey appeared golden brown when I hoisted the pan out of the oven. I was feeling successful. When I put the bird on a cutting board, its wings flopped open and revealed a pinkish-white underbelly. Then I...

  • Dakota Gardener: Cranberries, an American tradition

    Esther McGinnis, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Nov 21, 2022

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, we turn our attention to preparing one of the year’s great feasts. The turkey is the neutral palette against which the side dishes reign supreme. Each year, I make a refreshingly tart cranberry sauce from scratch. Many of us take cranberries for granted but this fruit has a fascinating history and production method. Were cranberries served at the first Thanksgiving? No printed menu exists from the 1621 Thanksgiving in Massachusetts but it is feasible that t...

  • Eight points from glory: Cards fall in five to Linton-HMB for Region 3 title

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 21, 2022

The enormity of the potential accomplishment for the Carrington Cardinal volleyball team was close at hand. Down two sets to the back-to-back reigning state champions in Linton-HMB, the Cards pulled off a comeback for the ages in the third and fourth sets, and were up 5-1 in the decisive fifth set, 10 points shy of the biggest, or at least the most emotional, victory in program history. However, the big game experience of the Lions shone through on the next critical seven point-run, capped by...

  • Back to the basics: Grapplers rebuilding

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 21, 2022

It isn't very often that the Carrington boys wrestlers have had to start mostly from the drawing board coming into a season. That is what awaits longtime Head Coach Josh Kerbaugh and his team as they hit the mats for the 2022-23 campaign. "On paper, this will be a rebuilding year, but we look forward to dealing with the hand we've been dealt," Kerbaugh said. "We graduated two state champions [Brecken Lura and Michael Clifton] and a runner-up [Matthew Duchscherer], so our young guys will have to...
