  • The American Dream: Hi-Way Drive-In closes doors; future uncertain

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 25, 2024

The proliferation of the automotive culture post-World War II led to the budding popularity of the archetypical symbols of Americana: the drive-in fast food restaurant. With rock-and-roll music, slicked-back hairstyles, poodle skirts and rollerskating waitresses ruling the scene, one of Carrington's most popular food stops, the Hi-Way Drive-In, began its existence in 1959. On Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, the continuous 65-year history of the drive-in came to an end when the last burger came off the...

  • Field and Garden: What's in your pumpkin pie?

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Nov 25, 2024

I’ve recently been reflecting on our Thanksgiving celebrations during our time living overseas. While China offers an abundance of delicious food, turkeys and canned pumpkin pie filling are rarely found on store shelves. For our first Thanksgiving, Melissa improvised with a roasted chicken instead of a turkey and sweet potato pie in place of pumpkin. The chicken was good; the pie, however, disappointed both of us. My wife was sure she could do better our second year, so when Thanksgiving a...

    Marvin Baker|Nov 25, 2024

With November being high school football playoff time in North Dakota, there’s been a lot of talk about the teams that have gone through their respective divisions and onto the Dakota Bowl. As many of us know, high school football has been re-aligned again and there are actually six divisions of North Dakota high school football. They include AAA, AA, A, 9-man, 6-man and independent. And after looking at every team in every division, there are hyphenated community teams almost everywhere. S...

  • Guest: Holiday cage match

    Jase Graves|Nov 25, 2024

Since the chaos of election season has ended, and we’ve stopped receiving daily text messages asking us to contribute a few dollars to our favorite candidate’s legal expense fund or celebrity endorsement financing plan, we can turn our attention to more important matters, like gravy. Seriously, though, I’ve read several articles recently warning that Americans should avoid discussing political topics during holiday gatherings in order to avoid conflict, hurt feelings and damaged sheet...

  • Dakota Datebook: Turkey Talk

    Nov 25, 2024

November 25, 2024 – Thanksgiving is coming! And while few decorate for this particular holiday with the same vigor they do for other holidays, there is one important item that almost everyone agrees makes for a necessity for this holiday: Whether it's turkey or Tofurkey, that special entrée is the reason for this season! The Fargo Forum devoted a great deal of ink to the matter of turkeys on this day in 1928. Like us today, they were very concerned about the costs of the holidays. Luckily fo...

  • Thunderstruck! M/P-B wins Region 3 championship

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 25, 2024

Jacie Connell has had her fair share of talented volleyball teams during her 12-year tenure helming the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan co-op, and the P-B-K co-op before that. In those dozen seasons, 11 of them ended short of the ultimate goal of qualification for the State Class B Tournament. This one was for those past teams, just as much as it was for those Thunder players who finally broke through that ceiling Thursday night, Nov. 14. For the first time in program history, M/P-B advanced to state...
