Violin thief in N.D. On March 9 in 1911, the Fargo newspaper reported on an interesting crime. Professor Hendrickson, the main player and victim, lived a relatively quiet life. He worked at the Dakota Conservatory of Music in Fargo where he taught the art of music. The Conservatory existed among other offices in the upper floors of a newly-built, yellow brick three-story building. Surely, sweet melodies could be heard by passersby on the street. The professors at the conservatory were also...
Dear Savvy Senior, What tools can you recommend to help protect trusting seniors from scam calls? My 74-year-old mother gets tons of unwanted telemarketing and robocalls on her cell and home phone and has been duped out of hundreds of dollars. Frustrated Daughter Dear Frustrated, It’s a great question! Scammers are always looking for new ways to dupe people out of money, and in the U.S., phone calls remain the primary way swindlers hook older victims. The Federal Trade Commission recently f...
“We’ve nothing in Iowa that compares with your Research Extension Center (REC),” said my new acquaintance. “I was amazed by what I saw last summer.” This conversation took place several weeks ago, while I was attending the annual conference of Practical Farmers of Iowa. On the final day of the conference, I introduced myself to a group of people at a round-table discussion about haskaps, a blueberry-like fruit that is attracting interest from an increasing number of fruit growers on the Great...

War bride in N.D. Among North Dakota's many immigrants have been women who married American servicemen stationed abroad. One such war bride arrived in Bismarck on March 1 in 1948. Anni Leier was to marry her WWII sweetheart, Edwin Ackerman, a school teacher in New Leipzig. But when she got off the plane, she found herself stranded, because she couldn't speak English. After some difficulty, cab driver L. W. Zacker realized she needed a ride to New Leipzig and agreed to drive her there the next...
There is nothing better than eating fresh peas in the garden. You pop open a pea pod and the green pearls inside are as sweet as candy. At North Dakota State University, we have worked with hundreds of families to identify the best peas for our state. The finest pea is Lincoln, an heirloom variety from 1908. I rarely like heirlooms. There is a reason why an heirloom becomes an heirloom. It's called progress. For example, I didn't ride a horse and buggy to work today. I drove a car. It's called...

Do you talk to your plants? I read an interesting article last year on this topic and filed it away for later use. It turns out the dark foggy days of January are the perfect time to explore the benefits of plants in our lives. In 2022, Trees.com surveyed 1,250 people to see how chatty they are with their plants. Forty-eight percent of the people surveyed reported talking to their trees and/or plants. One in five of those people talk to their plants every day. Houseplants were the most talked...

During his thirty-five years as a UND professor, Robinson...

While today, many young adults consider college a time to become independent, in the early 1900s, college was a different sort of experience, and on this date in 1908, the University of North Dakota announced a new rule for co-eds: if they wanted to go downtown after 6 o'clock, they needed written permission from their parents. This rule came to pass because one night, a number of students went to the theater instead of a law school dance, and a member of the faculty saw them there and reported...

Dear Savvy Senior, I had dental insurance through my work for many years but lost it when I retired and joined Medicare. Where can retirees find affordable dental care? Uninsured Al Dear Al, Unfortunately, about two-thirds of U.S. retirees don’t have dental insurance today.
