Gardens in North Dakota look great this year. The rains have been plentiful in most areas, and our plants are thriving. Be prepared to protect your garden from insect pests. Swarms of flea beetles will be arriving soon, and I see white moths laying eggs on my cabbage today. Whenever my vegetable garden gets attacked by insect pests, I don't get sad. Instead, I get mad. Then I get even. When I was a farm boy, I sprayed a product called Sevin (perhaps misspelled but very effective) to kill the...
Dear Savvy Senior, How does Medicare cover cataract surgery? My eye doctor recently told me I’ve developed cataracts and should consider making plans for surgery in the next year or so. Almost 67 Dear Almost, Like gray hair and wrinkles, cataracts are an inevitable part of the aging process. Eventually, everyone (usually in their 60s) will develop cataracts, a condition that causes cloudy or blurry vision. The only way to correct this is through cataract surgery. Fortunately, Medicare does c...

My friend Don is recovering from a dislocated shoulder. He was on a ladder, using a chainsaw to prune branches from a tree. The first three branches came down safely and as planned. The last one did not. The final branch remained partially attached to the tree as it fell. The branch swept back towards the ladder and knocked it out from beneath Don. You can figure out the rest. Even though he was injured, Don realizes how lucky he was. A dislocated shoulder is tough, but it could've been a lot...
"Oh, no!" I exclaimed. I practically leaped out of the passenger seat and hurried to the back of the car. I had not had a fender bender. I opened my car's hatchback and found the source of the unusual aroma in the car. Unfortunately, I left my leftovers from a delicious meal at a Mexican restaurant in a warm vehicle for 16 hours. It included grilled steak, shrimp, chicken, bacon, onions and peppers with a creamy sauce. I had been pleased when we left the restaurant the previous evening. My...

Old and Achy Dear Old, For mobility challenged seniors, a walk-in bathtub can be a terrific option to consider because they’re much easier to get into and out of than a standard tub, which also helps prevent falls. Warm temperatures in July accelerated corn and soybean growth, but last week’s cool weather caused a setback. Typically, our highs this time of year are around 82 degrees, but from August 4 to 10, temperatures were eight to 17 degrees below that mark. The cool weather slowed the development of both corn and soybean plants. Soybeans, in particular, do not fare well when night temperatures drop to the lower 50s, as low temperatures inhibit the movement of starch from soybean leaves to seeds. Forec...

“I think we should plant perennials next year,” remarked my wife the other day. We’ve planted and enjoyed a large patch of zinnias the last two years. I would probably plant them again, but Melissa is ready for a change. She has an English-style cottage garden in mind. Melissa likes the variety, color and wildness that cottage gardens possess. The question is: what should we plant? I recently found an NDSU Extension publication that could help us decide: “Annual and Perennial Flowers for Nor...

“It just keeps raining and raining,” a farmer remarked during our phone conversation ten days ago. “We had an inch and a half on Saturday, and then two-tenths of an inch on Monday and again on Tuesday.” Most of our focus has been on the amount of rain (13.5 to 15.3 inches) Foster County has received this spring and summer. However, after my conversation with the farmer, I became curious about how often it has rained. Checking the records from the Carrington NDAWN station, I discovered that we...

Last year, I seeded a small patch of bee lawn to see how it would work in my yard. It is an out of the way area tucked behind a shed and spruce tree that I don't like to mow. I wanted to try it out before I committed to converting more areas of the backyard into a bee lawn. A bee lawn combines flowering plants for pollinators with low maintenance turfgrass. Not just any flowering plants can be used for a bee lawn. The flowering plants have to be good sources of pollen and nectar for...
I saw the river of creamy liquid on our garage floor at the base of the freezer. I was on the way to retrieve something to thaw for dinner a few years ago. My heart sank as I walked closer. I saw that the freezer door was slightly ajar. The liquid came from a large box of melting ice cream bars that were irresistible to my children, especially on warm summer days. After squeezing the food packages, I closed the door and began coming up with a game plan to deal with thawed food. Let’s just say t...
Dear Savvy Senior, I work for a county health department and every summer we’re seeing more and more seniors get sick and even die from heat-related illness. Can you write an awareness piece on the affects extreme heat has on older adults, and what they can do to guard against this summertime risk. Thanks for helping keep seniors safe! Health Advocate Dear Advocate, Happy to oblige! Most people don’t realize that each year, extreme summertime heat kills more people in the U.S. than hurricanes, f...
