Beautiful weather for the 37th Annual Chamber Golf Day held on June 25 led to many golfers enjoying free golf on the gorgeous CrossRoads Golf course during the open golf afternoon. Fifteen teams participated in the Best Ball Scramble held that evening. The first place team with a score of 29 (7 under par) was (left to right): Tyler Hewitt, Scott Beumer, Kent Hewitt and Wayne Shipman....
Another classic in the latest installment of the Carrington/New Rockford hardball rivalry came to pass at Jim Johnson Park on the southern edge of New Rockford. This time, the Post 25 Redbirds went two innings beyond regulation length to finish off the Post 30 Black Sox, 5-3, in a Thursday, June 13 affair originally slated as a home game, but which switched to the Sox's home field due to ongoing renovation work at the City Park diamond. The visitors on this day scratched across single runs in...
Rainouts and field availability have largely kept the Carrington Babe Ruth (13-to-15 year old) Redbirds baseball program on the shelf for the first two weeks of their schedule, but they have nevertheless gotten three games into the books. Because of ongoing repair work at City Park, all three of the varsity contests have been on the road. On June 10, the Redbirds traveled to face Nelson County, and dropped a 7-3 decision to the young Owls. Two days later, on June 12, Carrington ran into a...
The elements were the X-factor when the best golfers and teams in Class B converged at CrossRoads Golf Club in Carrington for two days of abbreviated action Wednesday and Thursday, June 5-6. A three-plus-inch downpour several hours before play was supposed to begin on Tuesday, June 4, postponed the entire first day of golf to Wednesday. The original plan was to play an 18-hole one day event that day, but flooding on the southern portion of the course shortened the round to just nine holes. With...
Carrington senior Grady Shipman was selected for the second consecutive year to the Class B All-State Baseball First Team for his performance on the field in 2024. The team is selected by the North Dakota High School Coaches' Association (NDHSCA). Shipman, the Cards' lefthanded-swinging shortstop, pitcher and sometimes catcher, batted .470 with two home runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 25 runs batted in (RBI), 12 stolen bases, and 26 runs scored. He also finished his high school career as one of...
The Carrington Redbirds 12U baseball program continued their red-hot start to the Cal Ripken baseball season, taking four straight victories to win the Buffalo City Bash in Jamestown June 7-8. Carrington won all of their games by the 10-run rule, getting wins over Grand Forks AA (12-1), Nelson County (13-0), Devils Lake (11-1) and Jamestown (21-3). One of the highlights of the tournament on the defensive side was a no-hitter pitched by Landin Clifton. Members of the team are, front row (L-R):...
Carrington's John Raymond O'Hara American Legion Post 25 baseball program comes into the summer with a new face at the controls of the Redbirds' ship, but one that is familiar to those who have followed the team in recent years. Jayden Shipman faces a tough task in taking over for Tim Ranum as Post 25 head coach. Ranum guided the team to state championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016, as well as two second-place finishes and perennial contender status within the B division. Shipman is a CHS and...
Jesse Wessels of Kensal, competing for the Midkota archery program, finished in 29th place out of 366 total shooters in his age group for the 3-D category at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Championship Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., June 6-8. Wessels shot a score of 282 at nationals, following his tremendous performance in late April at the NASP Western National IBO (International Bowhunting Organization) 3-D Challenge in Sandy, Utah, where he placed fifth in...
A deluge of rain around nine hours before play was scheduled to begin last Tuesday washed out the entire first day of the State Class B Boys' Golf Tournament at CrossRoads Golf Club. So, the North Dakota High School Activities Association condensed the planned June 4-5 slate into one day only, Wednesday, June 5, for 18 holes of competition to determine the best of the best. However, those plans were further revised Tuesday night when an inspection of the course showed that the front nine holes...
The Carrington Redbirds 12U baseball program won five out of six games to take the first place trophy at the Missouri River Naturals Border Battle Invitational, held at Clem Kelley Diamonds in Bismarck. The Redbirds won their first game over Jamestown, 5-3, then lost their first and only game of the event when they fell to U.D. (Upper Deck) Expos from Billings, Mont. by a 13-3 score. They then won the remainder of their pool play games, defeating Mandan, 13-2, and the host Missouri River...
At the conclusion of the Region 3 Baseball Tournament held May 20-22 in Steele, select players from the five league programs were recognized as All-Region athletes. Members of the team are, front row (L-R): Tate Wolsky, Carrington; Isaiah Oster, Kidder County; Connor Knatterud, SNR; Blase Isaacson, LaMoure/Litchville-Marion; and Parker Salwei and Connor Kosiak, South Border. Back row: Corbin Clifton, Carrington; Keaton Cudworth, SNR; Jacob Kartes, Kidder County; Bradyn Collier, SNR; Grady...
Thirty-four years at the helm of the Carrington track and field program has yielded much in the way of individual and team success for Greg Hoeckle. Since starting his head coaching tenure in 1990, Hoeckle's Cardinal squads have consistently been among Class B's finest. Nine state girls' championships from 1999-2004 and 2012-14, four runners-up trophies (three girls, one boys), numerous regional team crowns and a countless number of standout athletes can all testify to the attention and...
The Carrington track and field team, at least on the girls' side, had an outside shot to deliver the 10th state team championship in school history, all won under the watchful eye of retiring Coach Greg Hoeckle (see related article). It didn't come to pass in the end, but the Cardinal girls and boys had some of their best performances of the spring to end the 2024 season on a strong note at the State Track and Field Meet at the MDU Resources Community Bowl May 23-25. The Cards placed fourth in...
Despite the horrendous weather conditions on Friday, Harvey-Wells County had a great state track and field meet, as the boys placed 8th overall and the girls finished 17th at the Bismarck Community Bowl Thursday, March 23-25. The meet started with a windy Thursday night competition, where HWC competed in the long jump and 4x200 relay. Friday brought strong winds and rain, as well as a three to four hour delayed starting time. A wet, puddled track had participants just trying to win or finish...
When your top competition in the shot put at the state meet sparks legitimate discussion of what would happen if his attempt would clear the pit, you gladly take what you can place-wise. Griggs/Midkota's Levi Kautzman did as well as he could have realistically imagined, finishing in second place to Kindred's Riley Sunram in the event in Bismarck at the State Track Meet. The left-handed Kautzman hit a career-best 54 feet and 1/2 inch attempt, a full 7 1/2 feet behind Sunram's winning 61'6" toss....
Two athletes for Medina/Pingree-Buchanan made it to the big stage for the State Track Meet in Bismarck May 23-25. In the 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles, junior Savannah Reister and senior Mark Thomas competed against the best of the best in their respective races. Both Reister and Thomas ran in preliminary heats, but did not advance to the finals. Reister's time of 17.52 seconds was 14th best, while Thomas's 16.44 placed him in the 12th spot. (Correction: In the May 27 edition of the...
At the Region 2 team qualifying meet on Tuesday, May 28, senior Grady Shipman put together a complete 18-hole round to earn the right to end his high school athletic career on his home turf. Shipman shot a 37 on the front nine and 40 on the back for a 77, and was one of 19 golfers to achieve qualification by the 79-shot threshold at CrossRoads Golf Course. One other Cardinal golfer, senior Wyatt Weninger, shot the best round of his career to just miss automatic qualification, shooting two 40's...
The second-to-last chapter in what Carrington hopes will be a storybook finish to their track season for 2024 was written at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan on May 17. The Cardinal girls had a back-and-forth race for the team crown with Shiloh Christian, and ultimately came home with the South Central Region championship with a 190-point performance to the Skyhawks' 161. Regional competition is the best time for North Dakota squads to get those last few qualification slots and relay...
For the second consecutive spring, the M-P-B Thunder's state track meet delegation will consist of one solitary member. Once again, that honor goes to senior Mark Thomas, who is the lone male competitor in the Thunder program. Thomas's second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles by just .07 seconds to Carrington's Logan Weninger at the South Central Regional Track Meet in Mandan (16.41 to 16.34), allowed him to represent M-P-B at the Bismarck Community Bowl this past weekend. He also placed...
The Hornet track and field team traveled to Rugby on Friday, May 17, and competed in the North Central Regional Track and Field meet at Johnsen Field. The regional meet was the last chance for any individuals and relays to qualify for the state meet, and any athlete that met the state standard or finished in the top three in an event would qualify for the state meet Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25, at the Bismarck Community Bowl. The Hornets had a nice day overall, with the boys finishing in 3rd pl...
With a few clutch hits, pitches and grit, the Carrington softball team advanced the furthest in the postseason they ever have in their three years of existence as a program. Starting from their inclusion in the south sub-region play-in game, the Cardinals went on to win a trio of games in the Region 2 Tournament, on the doorstep for State B Tournament qualification. The Cards rolled past #5 seed Larimore at City Park to begin the tournament on Thursday, May 16, 23-3, setting up a Saturday...
Three individual middle to long-distance runners, along with one boys' relay, were the new qualifiers for the Griggs/Midkota Titans at the North East Regional Track meet in Hillsboro on May 17. The G-M girls received third-place runs by seventh grader Kadence Spickler in the 800-meter run (2:32.64) and another bronze placement by Tianna McCardle for the 1,600 (5:47.95). Meanwhile, the Titan boys had two regional champions in 3,200-meter run winner Luka Berg, first in 11:06.76, and shot putter...
Seeding was largely rendered irrelevant in the 2024 spring high school baseball season, at least in Region 3. The nominal top seed, the Carrington Cardinals, had three losses in league play, two coming to fifth and bottom seed LaMoure/Litchville-Marion and another to fourth-seeded South Border coming into Region 3 Tournament play in Steele this past Monday, May 20. A 4-1 opening win over the Loboes for the Cards, sparked by a shutdown pitching performance by senior Grady Shipman with 16...
Carrington got a lot of swings of the club into their muscle memory over two weeks-plus of meets spanning May 6 to last Wednesday, May 22. Four of those five events were in the Fargo to suburban-Fargo area, and the final meet this past Wednesday was the Region 2 individual qualifier at CrossRoads Golf Club. The Cards began that gauntlet of meets in Oxbow, scoring a 423. Central Cass took the team victory with a 358, behind junior Jake Thompson's winning 86 scorecard in a day where golfers strugg...
In this, her final season on the track as a Cardinal, Madison Johnson has come into her own and established herself as one of the program's legends. Now, it just remains to be seen if those blistering numbers on the stopwatch translate to individual or team glory at the state meet this upcoming Thursday-Saturday in Bismarck. Johnson broke the CHS 800-meter record with a 2:19.34 time at the HWC Invitational in Fessenden Saturday, May 11, the fourth time this spring that she has achieved the top...
