In late Tuesday night action from this past reporting period, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder girls basketball team was stymied by the Linton-HMB Lady Lions, 66-18, in the District 2 opener for both clubs. The Lions improved to 6-1 and 1-0 in the district, while M-P-B fell to 1-6 and 0-1 within league play. Nondistrict boys basketball from Tuesday saw the Griggs/Midkota Titans travel to Page to take on the Maple River Raiders. The home squad came away with a win over the Titans, 59-49. G-M is now 1-2 with the loss, while Maple River evened...
Both Carrington wrestling teams were front and center at their annual home tournament Saturday morning and afternoon, December 9. The annual Al Larson Memorial Wrestling Tournament was held in both the West and East Gyms, with separate boys' and girls' tournaments. In the girls team standings, the Cards finished only 18 points behind winner Central Cass with 151 total points, while the boys were third, scoring 158 to finish behind tourney champion Lisbon's 212.5 and Class A Minot's 204. Dru Carr...
Before the start of the Al Larson Tournament, the Carrington boys and girls faced off with their team opponents in a total of six dual matches. Four of those were on the boys’ side, and the Cardinals won three of the four matchups with New Salem-Almont, Central Cass and Napoleon, while dropping their match to the Minot Magicians. The girls team took on Pembina County North and South Border, getting victories in both matches. Results from the Carrington Duals for both the CHS boys and girls a...
Towards the end of last season on the wrestling mat, things were starting to come together for then-CHS sophomore Dru Carr. After several seasons taking his licks as a lightweight grappler for the Cards and learning how to turn losses into wins, Carr had his breakout season in 2022-23 with a sixth-place finish in the old 113-pound weight class at the State B Tournament. He took that confidence into this year's Al Larson Memorial Wrestling Tournament, and won his first-ever weekend event with...
One has to go all the way back to 1981 for the last time Carrington and Devils Lake met on the basketball floor as conference mates. That was the final year of the Northstar Conference, an “island of misfit toys” in the Class A division mostly consisting of lower-enrollment schools too big for the then-larger Class B membership that at one time boasted 32 districts. The Cardinals and Firebirds, previously known as the Satans 42 years ago, resumed pleasantries as Division A members Tuesday nig...
Eighth grader Addisyn Faul calmly drained two free throws with five seconds remaining in the overtime period to seal an exciting 60-58 win for HWC over the Velva Aggies in Velva on Thursday, December 7. The Hornets had a solid start to the opening quarter, with Rachel Neumiller hitting a three and scoring five while Breanna Heilman added four more points, helping HWC take a 13-6 lead. The Aggies finished the first up with two free throws from Taryn Braaten and field goals from Natalie...
In the switch from two to three divisions in basketball, one subsection of schools was particularly affected, those being the private schools. The long-time Region 5 powers in both boys and girls basketball, Shiloh Christian of northeast Bismarck, were one of those teams placed into the new Division A. And, if the final score of their girls game with Carrington was any indicator, the new intra-divisional rivalries should be tense battles indeed. The Skyhawks clawed back from trailing by seven po...
Griggs/Midkota’s girls basketball team took their third win of the season Tuesday night, December 12, with a 48-40 win over the M-P-B Thunder. The loss dropped the Thunder’s record to 1-3 on the season. Statistics from this game were not available at press time, but will be published when they are received....
The Carrington boys had their chances, but were unable to withstand a fourth-quarter surge by the Griggs/Midkota Titans in Glenfield and fell in a 51-41 decision Monday night, December 11. The Cards trailed by merely a 30-28 score into the final eight minutes of play, but G-M wore a path to the foul line and cashed in on their opportunities to secure the win. Much of that was due to the clutch foul shooting from Will Spickler, who hit seven of his eight attempts in the fourth and added a...
The Griggs/Midkota Titans' loss to the Oakes Tornadoes in Cooperstown contained easily-fixable mistakes that could serve the team well if they learn from them. One bad quarter was all it took for the Titans to get behind the eight ball for good in a 43-26 loss on December 7, as a two-point showing for the second quarter allowed the visitors to build a six-point cushion up to 16 at the half. Jessa Spickler had the one field goal in that period, and the Titans had only two free throw attempts...
HWC came from six points down late in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get the final points needed as they dropped a 53-50 game to Linton-HMB on Saturday, December 9, in Linton. The Lions got the quick 4-0 lead as Gentry Richter had two field goals. Avery Williams scored two and Tallen Thorson added a three, as the Hornets took the lead. Tyler Swang scored four points late in the first, as HWC led, 12-9, after one. Noah Ziegler's three- pointer moved the Hornet lead to six early in the second, b...
Girls’ Basketball Saturday, December 9 Washburn 40, M-P-B 27 Medina/Pingree-Buchanan couldn’t build sustained offensive success in a 13-point loss to the Washburn Cardinals at the Stutsman County Shootout on December 9. Kalen Kinzell had nearly half of the Thunder’s 27-point output, scoring 12 points and representing the team’s only consistent scorer for the game. Ashlyn Schmitz’s 12 points led Washburn, with Kesia Boeshans adding eight for the winners. In their final game before the Christmas break, the Thunder will travel to Linton Tuesday,...
Maybe their new classification isn't so daunting after all. It's a very brief sample size, but the Carrington girls basketball team made it one-for-one in the Division A era with a 57-49 shocker of sorts at Grafton Thursday night, November 30 for their first win in Region 2 play. The Spoilers were ranked third in the state in the inaugural preseason Division A coaches' poll, sitting behind Thompson and Wahpeton. To end up on top, Coach Andy Braaten focused on limiting the main cause of their...
Griggs/Midkota got off to a 2-1 start to the girls' basketball season, taking fifth place and the consolation championship at the Lake Region Invitational in Devils Lake Thursday-Saturday, November 30-December 2. The Titans got things going with the first game of the tournament on Thursday, as they faced off with the Devils Lake junior varsity team. At one point in the second half, G-M enjoyed a 10-point lead at 35-25, but the young Firebird girls would keep chipping away and eventually sending...

Carrington's boys wrestlers took the mats for a pair of duals Thursday night, November 30, in the East Gym with new Region 2 opponents Northwood and Rugby, and came away with 24-3 and 48-12 victories. There was no time to rest, however, as they boarded the bus for the two-day Velva Invitational, and the condensed format of the weekend yielded many Cardinal points and two champions. Jayden Broadwell (127 pounds) and Corbin Clifton (152) each won their respective weight classes in Velva, and the...
The M-P-B Thunder's offense found it hard to gain much traction in a pair of defeats to begin the 2023-24 girls' basketball season, but got their groove back last Tuesday night with a 65-53 win against Warwick. At Maple Valley High School Thursday, November 30, the Thunder scored just 11 first half points in a 44-28 loss to the Maple River (Maple Valley/Hope-Page) Raiders. In their following game with Oakes, M-P-B couldn't get the shots to fall in the second half, with 10 points in another...
The 2023 edition of the HWC girls basketball Team opened up their season this past weekend at the 47th Annual Central North Dakota Conference (CNDC) Tournament in Rugby at Charlie Hanneman Gymnasium. The Hornets started the season with a tough 73-39 loss to highly-touted St. John, then lost a close battle to the Glenburn Panthers by seven. HWC rebounded from a 12-point deficit in the seventh place game to defeat Drake-Anamoose by 15 to end the weekend. St. John 73, HWC 39 Aubree Jeanotte...
The Carrington girls' wrestling program finished atop the leaderboard at a pair of tournaments held Thursday and Saturday, November 30 and December 2. Coach Mark Pazdernik's team edged the host school by three points, 153-150, to take the Napoleon Early Bird Tournament, then captured the Pembina Co. Grizzlies Invitational in Walhalla two days later with a 173-point total. Two Cardinal wrestlers kept their early season unbeaten records intact, as Khendra Garcia took the 142-pound division in...
Grady Shipman, son of Wayne and Denise Shipman of Carrington, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the Valley City State University Vikings and Head Coach Alec DeMaria. Currently a senior at CHS, Shipman will follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Jayden, who also played for the Vikings. Grady was an All-State player this past spring during the high school season and a three-time All-Region 3 selection. The left-handed swinging pitcher, shortstop and catcher hit .533 with...
The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team kicked off their season on Monday, Nov. 27 against the rivals from down the road – the Carrington Cardinals. However, due to the new 3-class system, the Cardinals are now placed in the Division A, Region 2 bracket and the Rockets are placed in the Division B, District 4 bracket. But the division didn't matter in this matchup. The Rockets took a strong 6-point lead in the start of the first quarter with baskets scored by NR-S seniors Kelsie B...
The move from two classes of basketball to three in the state of North Dakota is a momentous step towards what is hoped to be competitive balance. It's not the only new thing hoop fanatics will notice this season, however. Beginning this winter, there is one major rules change that will go into effect, governing free throw situations and how they are conducted moving forward. The "one-and-one" situation, in which a team is awarded a free throw upon the opposition committing the seventh team...
It wasn't the future that Carrington's basketball programs and school administration would have preferred to face. But, now that they're here, it's time to make the best of it. For the first time since the 1963 season, there will be three divisions of basketball in North Dakota instead of two, and the Cardinals have moved from among the higher enrollment Class B schools into one of the smaller programs in the new Division A. Coach Andy Braaten will embark on what is officially a quarter century...
A pre-meal appetizer before the turkeys and casserole came out of the oven meant some exciting action from the Cardinal mat crews two days prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. Carrington started the head-to-head portion of the 2023-24 boys' wrestling campaign with a home dual in the East Gym Tuesday, November 21, against the Oakes Tornadoes, falling in 42-30 fashion. Meanwhile, at Fargo South High School the same night, the CHS girls' wrestlers got in their second event of the season by...
Allison Thomas could be described as Coach Jacie Connell's "Swiss Army knife" for the M-P-B Thunder volleyball program. Like the legendary utilitarian tool, Thomas did a little bit of everything on the court in her five years of varsity play. From helping to carry the Thunder offense at the net, to her work as an elite back row passer and defender, the 5'6" standout athlete was one of the most visible players in District 6 and Region 3 for a several-year span. Even though her stellar career...
