Harvey-Wells County scored 14 first quarter points and scored a touchdown in every other quarter, and the HWC defense held Park River Area to just a single touchdown in each of the final three quarters, as the Hornets claimed a 35-18 over the Aggies in a Homecoming game victory on Saturday, September 16, at L.C. Loerch Field in Harvey. The Hornets started the game with a 33-yard strike from Tallen Thorson to Keaton Keller down to the PRA 27-yard line. The big play was ever important, as the...
In danger of losing their first two District 5 matches, Carrington dug deep and got perhaps their most important win so far this fall on the volleyball court. Two very evenly-match-ed squads met in the Loboes' den in LaMoure, with valuable positioning and future tournament seeding on the line. And when the dust settled, the Cards prevailed in a five-set marathon over LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 24-26 and 15-8 last Tuesday night, September 19. Freshman Harper Kollman is...
Griggs/Midkota hoped that their win over BCN to start the league season in District 5 would spring them to a possible upset last Tuesday night in Cooperstown, but that was not to be. Despite playing well in the first set against the Edgeley-Kulm/Montpelier Rebels, the Titans learned, as two other district teams have so far, that the Rebs are not a squad with which to be trifled. The Titans fell to E-K-M by scores of 21-25, 14-25 and 13-25, which vaulted the visitors to sole possession of first...
The primary objective for the Carrington girls golf team has been achieved, after 18 holes of play at Maple River Golf Club Friday, September 15. And now, the Cards will trace that exact route back to Mapleton for the State B Golf Tournament, which will be held today and Tuesday (September 25-26). CHS took third place in the Region 2 team qualifier at Maple River with a combined score of 394 to nab the final slot for groups. Kindred took the regional team crown with a 355, four strokes better...
For the first time this year, Carrington competed as a full varsity squad on both the girls' and boys' sides when they traveled to the seventh annual Devils Lake Grahams Island Invitational, held at the state park located between Devils Lake and Minnewaukan Saturday, September 16. The Cardinal girls scored 127 points to finish in third place, while the boys were fifth at 213. CHS competed without top girls' runner Kenadie Pazdernik, as she is also a member of the volleyball team which played at...
Harvey-Wells County won their third and fourth consecutive road matches last week, defeating the St. John Woodchucks and Griggs/Midkota Titans on their home floors in three and four-game matches. The Hornets are now 4-1 in regular season play and 1-3 in tournament play, for an overall record of 5-4. HWC 3, St. John 0 Harvey-Wells County powered their way to a three game sweep over St. John in Region 4 volleyball action on Tuesday, September 12, in St. John. From the start, the Hornets were the...

After five weeks of play, the Griggs/Midkota Titans are still waiting to step into the winner's circle as it relates to the Friday night lights. Maple River's Tee Sylling made sure of that, rushing for five touchdowns and passing for another to boost the Raiders to a 51-22 win over the Titans Friday night, September 15, in Hope. The 6'3", 190-pound junior scored on rushing plays of 18, five, nine, four, and 69 yards spread out among the second to fourth quarters, and also got the game's scoring...
In her tenure leading the NR-S Rocket volleyball program, Sara Myhre has one big ticket list item that her team hasn't accomplished. Defeating their rivals from 16 miles down Highway 281, the Carrington Cardinals. Mark Thursday, September 14, 2023 on that calendar, as the Rockets, behind a big match from senior All-State performer Kelsie Belquist, took a 29-27, 12-25, 25-21 and 26-24 victory at CHS' East Gym in front of a raucous Cardinal crowd during their Homecoming Week. Senior middle hitter...
The Carrington offense has been equal parts Road Runner and Houdini over the first four weeks of the fall football season. As in, getting their athletes in space to make big plays happen, and making use of some sleight of hand with misdirection to create even bigger chunk plays. Coach Kyle Smith's Cards made the first switch flip play on defense, though, and that got the visitors going for good with a surprisingly-efficient 45-15 win over the Thompson Tommies in the Red River Valley Friday...
By necessity, the Griggs/Midkota Titans have had to earn an education on the football field the hard way. Now down two quarterbacks after an injury to starter James Woodstead, the Titans turned to their third signal-caller in freshman Trace Spickler. Spickler did very well in his starting debut, going 12-for-18 for 100 yards, but G-M dropped their fourth straight game to start the season, 37-6, against the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes. The game at Townsend Field in LaMoure was an...
The old saying "defense wins championships" seemed appropriate for the play on Friday, September 8, in Bottineau as the Hornet defense helped overcome seven HWC turnovers holding the Braves to just a touchdown in a 7-6 region victory. To say the defense won a championship is a bit premature, but in this case, they did step up and win this ever-important Class A Region 2 matchup with a once-defeated Bottineau team. The Hornet defense kicked it up a notch and stopped a Brave drive inside the HWC...
The question for Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier's girls volleyball program was never the athletic talent, or the desire. It was getting past the "Big Three" in District 5 competition, which for the past few years, has been some combination of LaMoure/Litchville-Marion, Oakes, or Carrington. The Rebels completed one part of that progression Thursday night, September 8, taking a surprising 3-0 sweep over Carrington in the district opener by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 27-25 in the East Gym to improve to...
At a special meeting of the North Dakota High School Activities Association held via Zoom call on Tuesday, September 5, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve a three-division volleyball system, which will largely follow the framework of the basketball plan passed previously by the NDHSAA. The system will take effect beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. Basketball's three-division system begins this winter. Similar to the basketball plan, passage of the volleyball plan required...
Senior Kacie Rexin was one of just four golfers to achieve the individual state qualification standard at the second Region 2 individual qualifying meet in Cooperstown Friday, September 8. Rexin shot a score of 80 (40 on the front and 40 on the back nine) on the nine-hole Cooperstown Golf Course to hit the automatic standard for the State Class B meet for the second time this season. She did the same at Hillsboro on August 28. Her score was two shots back of medalist Avery Bartels of Kindred,...
M-P-B got back into the winner's circle following a mini two-match losing skid, taking three straight sets over the Ellendale Cardinals Thursday night, September 7, in Pingree, and getting off on the right foot in District 6 last Tuesday, September 12, with another three-set win against South Border. Brynn Sorenson led three Thunder players in double figure kills with 17, followed by Maddie Gefroh's 11 and Allison Thomas's 10. Violet Bohl had 29 assists, and Alaina Bosche found the opposite...
Harvey-Wells County put together some solid volleyball against a younger, less experienced Kidder County team, defeating the Wolves in four games in non-region action on Tuesday, September 5, in Steele. HWC got behind early in game one, trailing 6-1. Four kills from Rachel Neumiller helped the Hornets go on a 11-1 run. Neumiller had seven kills in the first game, and along with two kills late from Ashley Keller, HWC claimed the first set, 25-18. The youthful Wolves gave HWC some fits in game...
Local cross country squads ran at the Ellendale Invitational on Friday, September 8, and returned to action last Monday, September 11, to the Crystal Springs Baptist Camp for M-P-B’s home meet. In attendance at Ellendale were the teams from Carrington, M-P-B and NR-S, and the same three teams were joined by Griggs/Midkota at Crystal Springs. Results from the two invitationals are as follows: Ellendale Invitational Varsity - Girls 1. Kenadie Pazdernik (CHS), 21:38; 3. Cyrena Kuss (CHS), 24:50; 4. Macy Fiebiger (CHS), 24:51; 5. Kaylin Pate (...
The Griggs/Midkota Titan volleyball team fell in four sets to the Hatton/Northwood Thunder on Tuesday, September 5, by scores of 23-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 20-25 in Cooperstown. Kelsey Johnson had 11 kills and four aces in the loss for the Titans. Vanessa Vollmer also added nine kills. G-M earned a victory over the BCN Bison in their District 5 debut for 2023 last Tuesday in Leal, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-19. Nonregion Volleyball Hatton/Northwood 3, Griggs/Midkota 1 at Cooperstown H-N 25 25 22 25 - 3...
When the quip comes out, "He just made a lot of money," credited to then-NDSU Coach Bob Babich in response to a play made in a rivalry game, you know greatness may just be coming your way. But Carrington's own Jim Kleinsasser put together a body of work in the college ranks that was more than just one grainy sprint-and-score that made the rounds in the early Internet days. Before he put on the pads for the Minnesota Vikings for 13 years, Jimmy, as he is affectionately called around these parts,...
In their illustrious gridiron lore, the Cavalier Tornadoes have seen their fair share of triumph and heartbreak. In between six state championships, won from levels spanning the original Class B to nine-man and the then-Class AA level, the Tornadoes hit a string of bad luck the last four years. Four straight losses in the Dakota Bowl in the nine-man division were a double-edged sword, and moved Cavalier back up to 11B this season. Up in the higher classification, but now struggling with...
The Griggs/Midkota Titans ran into a buzzsaw Friday night, September 1, as they were shut out by the #2-ranked team in Division 9B, the Sargent County Bulldogs, 46-0, in Cooperstown. The loss dropped the Titans to 0-3 in Region 1 and overall. Statistics from the loss to the Bulldogs were not available at press time. On Friday, September 8, G-M began a two-game road swing, starting with the tough LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes, and concluding this Friday night in Hope when the Titans face the...
Keaton Keller's acrobatic catch in the corner of the end zone with 45 seconds remaining in the game helped lift the Harvey-Wells County Hornets to a 21-18 victory over the Thompson Tommies at L.C. Loerch Field in Harvey on Friday, September 1. The Hornets and Tommies struggled at the start of this late afternoon matchup, as each team had turnovers early in the game. The Tommies got the low-scoring first half started late in the first quarter when quarterback Drew Overby found Brody Gibson wide...
The Thompson Tommies have always been on the short list of who's who in North Dakota Class B high school volleyball. Six-time defending Region 2 champions, including eight out of the last 10 years, five Class B championships and a coach (Lisa Strand) with over 1,000 career victories, means that their opponents have to bring their 'A' game to have a shot at a win. Carrington did just that Thursday night, August 31, and showed that they have the players to compete for postseason glory of their...
The most draining matches can end up being the most satisfying ones, especially if the team you favor is the one with the victory at the end of the evening. Griggs/Midkota endured a gauntlet of a five-set win over the Benson County Wildcats Thursday night, August 31, in Maddock, with three of the five games going into extra points. The 27-25, 26-28, 25-20, 24-26 and 15-12 win for the Titans (1-1) was their first of the 2023 fall season after a straight-set loss to M-P-B two nights before....
