The good feelings that accompanied the first week-and-change of the 2023 volleyball season for the M-P-B Thunder took a few temporary setbacks Thursday evening, August 31, in Edgeley, and last Tuesday night in New Rockford. In a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 23-25) loss to the Edgeley-Kulm/Montpelier Rebels, the Thunder battled point-by-point, but couldn't get the crucial points late in sets to hold off an athletic home squad. Junior Maddie Gefroh's 14 kills were a team-best, trailed closely behind...
In her final year of varsity golf for the Carrington Cardinal girls, Kacie Rexin has shown she can compete with the best in the state. Rexin was the only CHS golfer to compete in the prestigious A&B Crossover at Oxbow Country Club on August 21, and the senior proved she belonged in her lofty company. Her score of three-over-par 75 finished only behind the defending Class A and Class B champions, Rose Solberg of Fargo Davies (70, -2) and Avery Bartels of Kindred (71, -1). She and the rest of the...
Harvey-Wells County put together strong finishes in all three high school volleyball games against Drake-Anamoose to seal a 3-0 sweep over the Lady Raiders on Thursday, August 31, in Drake. The Hornets and Lady Raiders were close at the beginning of all three games, but the Hornets finished each game with a strong run. Game one saw Mariah Mack with consecutive kills, pulling Drake-Anamoose to within 7-6. Ashley Keller's second kill of the night gave HWC a mini-run and a 10-6 lead. An ace from...
In one of the track-and-field capitals of Class B, Logan Weninger showed that football pads were no impediment to chunks of yardage with his legs. The senior running back and long sprint ace for the Cardinals in the spring busted out for 190 yards on the ground, and 81 more on a kickoff return, and scored five touchdowns to help CHS zoom to a 48-14 win over the Rugby Panthers at Johnsen Field in Rugby. Weninger averaged just under 16 yards a carry with his 12 attempts, and even gave a subtle...
Langdon/Edmore/Munich threw four touchdown passes, and added two rushing and one defensive score, as the Region favorite Cardinals flew by the HWC Hornets, 50-12, on Friday, August 25, in Langdon. The Cardinals wasted little time in their initial drive of the game, covering 58 yards in four plays. Three pass completions for 53 yards, including a 27- yard strike from Rayce Worley to Mason Romfo for the game's opening score, led to a quick 6-0 lead for LAEM. HWC responded with a nice offensive...
Wyndmere/Lidgerwood made sure that the Griggs/Midkota Titans had an uphill climb ahead of them, with 22 points in the first quarter. The Titans didn't answer until the Warbirds had their fourth touchdown on the board, and the longtime southeast nine-man power cruised to another win, 48-14, in Wyndmere Friday night, August 25. "We got off to a rough start, but the offense was able to get in sync and made some good drives towards the end of the 2nd quarter," said G-M Coach Ryan Dockter. "In the...

M-P-B rolled out the welcome mats for the Griggs/Midkota Titans in both teams' first regulation-length matches of the season. The Thunder came straight off a very-strong performance at the Northern Cass Tournament (see story below), while the Titans stepped to the nets for their opener. Behind 12 kills from junior Maddie Gefroh and nine more by Allison Thomas, the Thunder improved to 5-1 with a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-14 and 25-19). Brynn Sorenson added five kills, and led the M-P-B servers...
Just one calendar year ago, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder took a 1-4 match record against all comers in their first action of the season, the Northern Cass Tournament in Hunter. One year later, and the Thunder have certainly turned some heads with their 2023 performance at the same event. M-P-B took down several Class B blue-bloods in surging to a mirror image 4-1 record this time around, and have served notice that they could be a possible contender in the Region 3 race. Playing in Pool...
The 2023 Hornet varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams both saw their first action at tournaments in Bottineau and Rugby on Saturday, August 26. The varsity girls spent the day competing at the Bottineau Invitational, where Coach Kristi Fike thought the girls had a good day. "Overall, I thought we did a good job," said Fike. "We had two girls missing that usually see a lot of playing time, and two players step in and do really great for them." In pool play, the Hornets dropped two games to...
Local schools Carrington and Medina/Pingree-Buchanan, along with a host of eastern Class A schools and a few others in the Class B ranks, took to Parkhurst Recreation Area north of Jamestown for the first meet of the cross country season. The 'Orr'iginals Invitational was held Saturday morning, August 26, in the wooded area just off Pipestem Reservoir. CHS had two runners earn top 20 status in their respective divisions, both on the girls' side. Junior and returning Class B All-Stater Kenadie...
Carrington stepped onto the turf for the first game of 2023, with a team short on depth, but high on potential playmaking ability. And according to the stat sheet, they accomplished the second part of that equation. However, the Bottineau Braves had just enough game-changers of their own to take a narrow 36-34 win in Carrington Friday night, August 18. In spite of 330 yards passing by Cardinal quarterback Josh Bickett, including four touchdowns, the Braves came out on top in the entertaining...
One play does not make a game. The Hornet defense literally had one play all game that they could look back on with question, but that one play motivated the defense to step it up a notch in a 38-14 season opening win over the Rugby Panthers in Harvey on Friday, August 18. The Panthers' Tucker Volk opened the first offensive series of the season for Rugby with a quarterback draw that went up the middle and around the right edge for a 53-yard score. An Austin Schneibel PAT run made the score 8-0...
The Hatton/Northwood Thunder scored touchdowns in all four quarters to outdistance the Griggs/Midkota Titans, 28-8, in the opening week of football Friday night, August 18, in Northwood. Six-foot-three, 175-pound senior receiver Ander Thorsgard recorded three of those scores, beginning with a 14-yard run in the first quarter, and later crossing the pylons via both a run and pass completion, each covering 40 yards. Thunder quarterback Derek Carpenter threw two touchdown passes, one to Thorsgard...
Football got their season going this past Friday night, and the girls' golf team hit the course for their first meet of the season last Monday. Carrington The Cardinal football team started Coach Kyle Smith's eighth year at the helm this past Friday night with a home game against Bottineau, and travel on the road this upcoming week to...
Kacie Rexin placed third overall, as did her Cardinal golf teammates, at the season-opening tournament at Fargo Country Club Monday, August 14. Rexin, a senior and returning All-State golfer after finishing fourth at the State B Tournament in Minot last fall, shot an 18-hole score of 87 to finish 16 strokes off the winning medalist performance by Kindred's Avery Bartels. Oak Grove's Sylvie Brantner was second, shooting 82. Also carding a top-10 performance was Molly Hansen, as she finished with...
The opening schedule for the fall of 2022 didn't leave the Carrington Cardinal football team a lot of wiggle room. Three of their first four games in 11B - Region 2 came against eventual playoff teams, and all four ended in losses. An exciting back-and-forth win in Grafton got them on the board, and they then won three straight contests to give them a chance for a win-and-in game with Langdon/Edmore/Munich on the last game of the season for a playoff spot. One 42-0 loss later, and the Cards' sea...

With no pressure of advancement needed to secure another State 'B' American Legion tournament berth, Carrington Post 25 pinned their ears back and had some fun. They then met up with Hatton-Northwood, and spotted them a 6-0 lead before making a big comeback and forging a 6-6 tie. With the game in the balance, Cody Otto delivered a walkoff single to give...
