Khendra Garcia and Jazmyn Ybarra became trailblazers last season as part of CHS' first varsity girls' wrestling program, and raised the bar further with another recent accomplishment. The two were the first female athletes from the school to enter into the 2023 U.S. Marine Corps Junior/16U Freestyle National Championships at the Fargodome July 15-22, as part of Team North Dakota. The tournament is the world's largest event for the sport, with over 7,000 total athletes participating over the...
The District 4 Tournament wasn't the only baseball that Carrington Post 25 played during this past week's worth of reports. A three-team doubleheader with LaMoure Post 19 and Mayville Post 8 was held at City Park on Thursday, July 13. The Redbirds would need late-game heroics from Grady Shipman to take a 4-3 dramatic victory over the A's of Post 19, and an extra-inning outburst by the Patriots gave them a 14-8 win over Post 25. Shipman's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning off LaMo...
A total of 172 youth from ages preschool through sixth grade, participated in the 22nd Annual Youth Track Meet at Stadium '22 here on Monday night, July 17. Organizers Shane and Mary Wendel wish to thank the sponsor of the Youth Track Meet, CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center, Carrington Public School for the use of the track, Leevers Foods for...
The meat of Carrington Post 25's American Legion Baseball summer schedule from July 5 to July 11 delivered good, not-so-good, and mixed results over its duration. It started out with a tremendous pitching performance courtesy of Hudson Schmitz's no-hitter over the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox, 4-1, to keep the Redbirds' league record untarnished for the moment. That was followed up with a showing of one win and two losses at the very-tough Jack Brown Classic in Jamestown, and a doubleheader...
The Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth team, to borrow casino parlance, hopes to run the table at the Red River Valley League Tournament in Hillsboro July 12-16. Carrington is the number four seed in the tournament, and played fifth seed Mayville in the first round on Wednesday in double-elimination action. Other first round games pitted top-seeded HCV against the Thompson 'B' team, #2 Thompson 'A' versus #7 Nelson Co., and #3 New Rockford taking on #6 Hatton-Northwood. The tournament concluded...
The Carrington 12U girls' softball team elected to go one extra inning with the score tied at 5-5 against visiting Rugby on Wednesday, June 28, and that mutual decision, agreed to by both teams, ended up with a win for the Redbirds by the final score of 6-5. The team's overall record sat at 4-2 following the contest....
Carrington American Legion Post 25 added a game not originally on the schedule for Wednesday, June 28, when they played the Langdon Red Sox at American Legion Field in Langdon. It wasn't a pretty result for the Redbirds, as they surrendered seven runs in the fourth inning and eventually dropped the nine-inning contest to Post 98 by 10-run rule, 13-2. The 'Sox were powered by starter Gage Goodman's arm and the aluminum of Mason Romfo. Goodman threw a seven-inning complete game, allowing seven...
Carrington Post 25 garnered a pair of victories at the Mid-Summer Classic, taking a 9-3 win over the Royals of Valley City Post 60, and needing extra innings to take down the Grafton Post 41 Spoilers, 8-7. Both of Post 25's games were played at Charlie Brown Memorial Field in Valley City over a two-day span, Friday and Saturday, June 23-24. The Classic also held several games in Jamestown as well. The Redbirds had seven hits in the win over the hosts on Friday, and leadoff hitter Jack Erickson...
The Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth baseball team took two wins over Thompson Wednesday, June 21, at City Park. The 'Birds took wins by scores of 12-2 and 11-1....
The John Raymond O'Hara Post 25 Redbirds of Carrington got the win they needed in a 3-0 blanking over Kidder County Post 231 on Monday, June 19, at Pirate Field in Steele, but they were several executed pitches away from a major win in Jamestown. Behind another nearly-untouchable outing from veteran lefty Lucas Hendrickson, the 'Birds improved to 2-0 in American Legion Class B District 4 play and 3-1 overall. It could have been 4-0, however, the Class AA Jamestown Post 14 Eagles put up a...
Incoming high school seniors and Class B individual champions Logan Weninger of Carrington, and Kelsie Belquist of NR-S, got the invitation of their track lifetimes. To pardon the pun, they ran with it. The two participated in the prestigious 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals June 15-18 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., the home track of the University of Oregon Ducks and one of the finest facilities in America, if not the world. Logan, the son of Brad and Lisa Weninger, participated in the...
In last week’s edition of the Independent, “placeholder” text regarding Grady Shipman’s final placement in the State Class B Boys Golf Tournament was inadvertently published. By design, the space was left blank during the production process until it was known what his final placing was. Shipman ended up in a five-way tie for 37th with his score of 172 (81-91), while Jackson Schumacher of NR-S placed in 54th as was written. The Independent regrets the omission....
Haley Wolsky, a 2023 CHS graduate and commit to the Concordia College volleyball program, played her last matches as a high school athlete as part of the Optimists All-Star Volleyball Series. The Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth team needed a bit of late-game magic on their side to get past rival New Rockford Thursday, June 15, at City Park. The Redbirds overcame a 5-2 deficit with a six-run fifth inning, and came away with an 8-7 comeback win over the Black Sox. In spite of struggles in the third frame, Taylen Mehring got the victory on the mound for the Redbirds. He worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven earned runs and 11 hits and notching six strikeouts. Ethan Roller pitched the...
Golfers hit the fairways and greens at CrossRoads Golf Club Tuesday, June 20, for the 'Swing Fore Charity' event, proceeds of which will help offset medical expenses for LeeAnn Hoppe. A total of 34 teams participated in the tournament. Organizer Eric Myhre said Wednesday that approximately $50,000 was raised....
On Thursday, June 8, the New Rockford Post 30 Black Sox took on Carrington Post 25 for their first home game of the Legion baseball season. However, any hopes they might've had about enjoying a smooth home opener were quickly dashed. The Redbirds employed "small ball" to score a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, sending two runners across home plate on a bunt single and a sacrifice fly. Then – already with a 2-run cushion – Lucas Hendrickson walked out to the mound in the bottom of...
Carrington Redbirds T-ball players, ranging in age from five to seven years old, took the field for the first organized sporting activity on the new Cal Ripken field at City Park Wednesday evening, June 7. As many of the participants had never played the sport until this summer, triumphs were celebrated, and (mostly) controlled chaos left some fun memories for all who witnessed the event. More photos from this particular game can be found at transcript.smugmug.com....
The implementation of a three-division basketball plan by the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) on February 8 has spurred momentum on adopting a similar plan for volleyball. At the regular meeting of the NDHSAA Board of Directors on June 6, the governing body accepted a draft proposal for a three-division volleyball plan, which would take effect no earlier than the 2024-25 season. The proposal retains the cutoffs from the basketball plan, with Division AA featuring...

Like PGA star Phil Mickelson, and borrowing from his baseball tenure, Grady Shipman is a natural right-hander who swings both his clubs and his bat left-handed. That dominant right eye served him well in his "other" spring sport, as the junior earned an individual State Class B Tournament spot at the Region 2 team qualifier at CrossRoads Golf Club Wednesday, May 31. Shipman shot a score of 75, or three over par, to finish four strokes ahead of the automatic individual standard and become CHS's...
The Carrington Redbirds Babe Ruth team, featuring baseball players from 13 to 15 years of age, got their season going with a game against Hatton-Northwood Monday, June 5, at City Park. The 'Birds also took on Wishek on the road last Tuesday, and hosted Nelson County Wednesday evening. Scores from the three games were unavailable at press time....
Grady Shipman's dogged intensity, IQ on the field and drive to succeed, along with trusting his natural abilities, helped him secure a spot on North Dakota's select Class B hardball squad. The Carrington junior was one of 18 boys named to the 2023 All-State Baseball First Team, sponsored by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA). An additional 14 players were named to the Second Team. Grady, the son of CHS Coach Wayne and Denise Shipman, batted .533 with four home runs and 22...
